Alright Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m tired of playing random scrubs in HDR Ranked Matches. My ranking is never going to be near the top because I bought this game 2 months after its release. I do however like to think of myself as a fairly decent player. Plus I keep hearing stories about how amazing a specific player is or whatever and I just don’t run into them at all.
I’d like to take a cue from my old days of Unreal Tournament and set up a specific, regular time where advanced/expert players of HDR can meet up in a single XBL Party then make and join in Player Matches. I propose we pick some people with decent, reliable connections and start sign-up sheets here on the forums for slots in the party. I have no idea how many people can connect to a single party though…
Lag is an issue, so we can pick hosts on a locational basis, like have an East Coast US Party, an International Party or similar. A slot in the Party should be by invite only so scrubs can’t get in, and resulting Player Matches should be set to 6 people private. It should be fun to meet up once or twice maybe a week and beat the crap out of each other, learning all the way. If anyone’s got a video capture card they can even record some of the matches for future use or something.
I’m liking the idea a lot. I’m on the East Coast, and I am always looking to play serious competition. Feel free to invite me man and we will get some games going. The idea would really benifit from someone recording it as you said. Unfortunately, I have no ways of recording my matches (yet). What days and times did you have in mind?
This is true, but who says you can’t have two things going at once? Kinda like having NFL games on Thursday, Sunday, and Monday. Why stop with just Sunday no?
:woot:
What seemed to work well for my PC gaming days was weekend nights and most of Sunday in general. We would go from like 9pm until the last people just threw in the towel and went to sleep.
I recently learned that an XBL Party can only hold up to 8 people so there’d need to be sorta a coordinated effort on this forum to sign-up and schedule everyone who wants to play.
We could also do a tournament every once in a while this way. I’m not sure how many a tournament can hold but it’s also possible.
Hey I just remembered too that we could employ some 3rd party technology so we can get everyone together, like a Ventrilo server. Those can hold a shitload of people at once to be able to coordinate rooms and matches. Then once a player match has been set up people can change their Ventrilo status to something like “in-game” to let people know what’s going on.
Slightly more planning is necessary to hash out the details but the overall point is that there needs to be:
an invite-only system to maintain the integrity of player skills, i.e. if a known member can vouch for your skill level then you can play
a way for everyone who qualifies to get into a chat room with their XBL screen names so that they can receive invites from hosts (6 at a time)
a bunch of hosts from different locations to invite people to player matches. Perhaps maybe setting up Ventrilo chat rooms dedicated to specific locations, and making selected hosts “Mods” of these chat rooms so that people can know who to expect invites from to participate in this. Ventrilo chat rooms would also remove the necessity to flood this forum with matchmaking posts because everyone will be in the same chat room talking to one another. Everyone has been vouched for in one way or another, so there’d need to be no ranking system. A host can just pick 5 people randomly and go at it.
Also, Ventrilo incorporates a password system, which can be spread by word of mouth and pms on the forums so as to facilitate the invite process. I.e., whomever just so happens to get the “secret” password to enter the chat rooms qualifies to play.
I dont know about all the ventilo chat rooms and other things you mentioned but if you want to set up a 6 player room let me know and I will play if I am on. I al always looking for good competition just to make myself better.
As far as ranked goes you are too good to be worrying about that Phoenix. Get some good people on your friends list and play that way. Better yet stick with quarter rooms. I get on ranked every once in a while but as you said its a joke mainly because of droppers and not everyone who is good play it.
Anyhow as far as vouching goes, your Guile is phenomenal. I play Dhalsim and I’m average. I’m still trying to take Sim to that supposed top tier playing level. Also I am tyring to learn Sagat.
Gamertag is Sweet Poison in case anyone wants to add me.
“What is a an but a miserable pile of Secrets? But enough talk, HAVE AT YOU!!”
and with that I say let’s do it tomorrow (Sunday) at around 2pm EST? I’ll set up the room and invite you Xurkey and whomever else even knows about this thread. Good?
It’s a damn shame that of all the mediocre fighting games out there that have the feature, this one, going almost 20 years strong has not gained a player skill matching feature. I feel bad for newcomers cause the old school SF2 community is pretty much closed and locked.
I’ll be the first to admit though that I am no good at fighting Sim, so it probably won’t be me that helps you take your Sim game to the next level. I will give Sagat a good match, though he’s pretty tough for Guile when properly played. Throw a lot of Tiger Shots and be prepared for jump-ins and you should be good against most contestants. But for heaven’s sake don’t be one of those Sagats that doesn’t throw ANY Tiger Shots and just tries to normal his way through. All Sagat’s moves are pretty vulnerable to attack if not set up properly.
These are words of great wisdom Alex… It makes me proud to have my guys wearing our league colors… it could make a man proud… :tear:
Okay, anyway, there’s another post talking about more than one day, this is true. But the WWL will help at least take care of two days a week. Monday Pool Play and Friday Special Events every other week.
Also, if scheduling is a problem you could always sign up for the roaming pool that week.
And SP, AVERAGE Dhalsim? If by Average you mean pumped up your game to the point you’re one of the top 10 Dhalsim’s on XBL then yes, you are so perfectly average that you are literaly invisible  I mean sure you can’t beat Cammy or anything but… j/k
Yeah that was pretty fun. Plus I got shown exactly to what extent Guile is incapable of dealing with many of Vega’s tactics…
I found out:
If Guile gets too close to Vega then all his moves go right through Vega!!!
Countering the Wall Dive needs more planning than I originally thought.
Flash Kicks will always miss a crouching Vega unless executed up really really close!! I have no idea why Sirlin’s all about Flash Kicks against Vega on his website, but they seem pretty useless for more than capitalizing on a mistake or as a futile escape tactic (I remember getting snatched in an air suplex from half a screen away during a RK Flash Kick!!). They certainly won’t stop a Vega on a Wall Dive rampage!
I was blown away by the sheer number of things I tried that just straight up failed!! …and I couldn’t tell if it was because I was lacking in skill or because it just be’s that way fighting Vega sometimes. Maybe Shari can answer that better than I can.
But I say this all to say, that needs to happen again. Will Sunday at 2pm work again? I kinda want to fight again sooner though because that was quite the learning experience. I’m interested in fighting Balrogs, Vegas, Blankas, and Dhalsims (hopeless…) just to see where I’m at with these matches. Everyone else I think I have a great chance of beating.
So I need 5-8 people and a good time in the evening of any day. East Coast preferred but I apparently can’t be picky just yet!!
