I totally agree, I only played in the last chance quals and the pressure there was bad enough. During the actual tourney you could almost feel the anxiety of the players in the air. People who weren’t there or haven’t been before dont understand, the Japanese take 3s and their games in general so seriously. They are very dedicated and an event like SBO is the place where all their hard work pays off.
There is a big gap in general between the Japanese and top foreign players, there is even a gap between the Tokyo and Osaka players as well. Personally I expected Pyro to at least carry his team into the 2nd round as out of all the non-Japanese players I saw during the Tougeki week he was the best and consistently did well against the Japanese in casuals… but the competition is so hard and ruthless, you only get one chance and then you are out. All it takes is one player to get on a roll and your finished… case in point MOV vs Nuki/KO and Kokujin.
I’m not tripp’n on how they did. Everybody saw the West Coast tourney and who had to bang to make it and that was our cream of the crop over there, and they lost.
So… Japan is just better simple as that.
I attended the E Coast quals and brought my best makoto and Ryu game and didn’t make it so the ABsolute best got to rep over there as well and they lost.
so… Again Japan is just better simple as that.
Still no need to hang heads low, everybody that made it to SBO are hella good at 3s and you know what, now I bet their even better!
to the wc n ec teams, we americans are proud of you. We sent our best teams and you guys gave it your all. You guys did the best you guys could’ve done. Plus all the press and media must’ve made you guys tired. Anyways welcome back and lets prepare for next year.
i only went that day, so i only caught the craziness that was 3s.
i didn’t record any matches what-so-ever, since they had a ban on that sort of thing. i did get some random footage of the gill cosplayer interview. i don’t think i got footage of the elena cosplayer, since i was almost traumatized.
anyway, their setup was too serious!
congrats to the american players justin, mark(mopreme), jon(kofiend), mike (pyro), frankie, and ricky for qualifying.
props to andy/tokyogameaction for organizing and making things happen!
also congrats to andy and chieh, best wishes to the both of you, and see you back in the states!
Sbo 2004 dvd all the matches from the top 16 teams, and a “best of” for each 1st round match
Sbo 2005 dvd had the whole tourney on it (but it was shorter than 2004 since it was 2-man teams)
So I think it’s safe to assume they’ll deliver at least top16 with some bunch from the first round, but chances to have the whole tournament are not slim.
Not that it makes a difference, but in fact I’m quite sure Ryan Hart was the only other foreign player to win a round -against SHINCHAN’s Chun. Ricky made a nice comeback at some point but he didn’t win any during his match against Keeper. Japan is still on another level…
Thanks to Daine (TSC), we have some footage of the SBO Last Chance Qualifiers - this is from the Australian team’s first match against some JP team (not sure of the name.
