Before you embarrass yourself further, considering that out of the top 32 only 3 teams were comprised of all 3 top chars, I think it was unlikely that one of them would win, yet they still did.

Nah, 3S will be at SBO until Capcom can come up with something to replace it, which they probably won’t. The game is still too popular to remove over there, anyway whenever the time comes for 3S to be removed from SBO, it will probably get its own event like what happened to ST (ST has X-Mania).
3S is comparable to MvC2 to us here in the states…there’s just almost no comparison…I really wanted Team US to own this year, but even I didn’t think we would be eliminated this early in the frey. I’m hoping that if we do go next year, that we will do better than this, anyways, the results where fun to read, and all of S. Korea’s teams eliminated in the first round in Tekken DR, that’s just insane…SBO this year was all Japan, mad props to them.

Not entirely, two Taiwanese players representing Taiwan placed top 8 in KOFXI. And one of the Taiwanese players ended up placing 2nd too.
n00b question: How do the SBO matches work? Is it first team to defeat all members of the opposing team?

yeah
its 3 players on each team. matches happen one at a time. if you lose a match, you’re out. first team to lose all their players is out. its possible for one player on a team to beat all the players on the other team (OCV–one character victory). if you win your match, you play the next player thats lined up from the other team. if you lose your match, your teammate designated to play after you gets to play (unless youre the 3rd and final person on your team).
