THAT’S why I was saying I need to copy an sd card and check out the contents before I move on this. Easy enough to do, and nobody would know until somebody confronted them with the video. To further what we were told initially, is that the cameras would only record if something was done to set off the built-in vehicle sensors (accelerating too rapidly, braking too hard, jostling). Then we were told that the cameras would automatically start recording upon starting the vehicle. We were told no audio in both cases. Now 3 employees confirm they were present (they were in the hallway looking at his monitor screen over his shoulder)while our supervisor was watching a realtime feed, complete with audio, of a couple of our drivers. And even though the radio was cranked and the vehicle was a rumbly pos, the conversation came through perfectly.
***IF***they are recording audio, have you said anything potentially incriminating?
Go look at the company handbook, the last one given to you and that you acknowledged in writing. If nothing is stating your consent to audio and/video recording while on the job, maybe you have something, but consider no. 1 above.
Google employment practices for your state and/or contact the dept of labor to get some insight.
Do you have another job lined up in case you move forward and make a case?
can you risk the legal fees and negative rep if it all backfires?
This is all hearsay right? Get some real that doesn’t get you fired.
do you have proof where they’ve stated its video only?
(Something about the Trump avatar makes that comment even funnier, especially if you picture a robot replacing Rhio2k.)
Given aznspyderman and other people have already commented on most of the sensible things, all I really have to say are two things that haven’t been touched yet:
How trustworthy is this other co-worker that supposedly told you what was happening in the first place?
Do you have a back-up job in case this goes south and gets you fired even if you are in the right?
so… how does your coworker know that audio actually goes with the video, and isn’t just a recorded phone call that your sup was reviewing for QA purposes?
he heard car noises? a fuckton of fools like to take calls in their cars, Bluetooth linking with your phone is standard on cars these days.
with your job potentially on the line, I wouldn’t believe it unless I saw it with my own eyes. if your coworker believes what he saw then let him be the one who takes the risks.
Most you will get out of winning a case against your employer is a few grand that will then be directed to your attorney for expenses. Also oh yeah a termination notice from your boss.
You get no money and lose your job. Not worth it. You aren’t gonna pull a few million out of your employer for illegal surveillance, if you somehow even when the case.
We don’t do that qa purposes crap. We drive around and work on sites. There 3 employees total who were there at the time. I was initially told by 1 guy who was there, then asked the other 2, who confirmed. Video was synched 1:1 with audio. Job’s not on the line. Not a technological caveman, here. Give me SOME credit. I bluetooth link all the time. At this point, I’m merely curious now as to what actually is recorded. I COULD be the “angry black man demanding mah rights”, but I don’t care so much any more. Now it’s just a matter of curiosity …and yes, I know what they say, but they always leave off the last part:
Curiosity killed the cat
Satisfaction brought him back
I’ll just chill with the mechanics and see what’s what on a slow day.
It’s a double edge sword. It covers your ass when shit hits the fan, but if you aren’t following the program, it cause unwanted scrutinizing. I work for a company that has this, and I would hate to have to work every day knowing I’m being recorded when I’m not driving like a paranoid safety freak.
