To get my dads car I’m gonna have to pay $540 a month for the next 10 months to finish paying off his lease. Then I get a really nice car that I now own… but have no idea how much longer the car is going to run or if some major problems might occur.
Then my other option is to go get a worse car… for more money. However the monthly payments would be a lot less. The plus of that would be knowing the car is in good running condition and I would get it with a lot less kilometers on the car which means it would last longer.
Bah… im all confused as to what I should do now with the whole car situation :(. I’m really starting to lean forward to a nice 2002 Jetta VR6 or something. Anyone got any input on this?

It was like 700 when he first got it. Its a lease to own. So I guess out of the cars price he paid everything but $5400. The car wasn’t exactly cheap.
I just think that buying the car off my dad would kill me. $540 + $300 for insurance? Peace out income =(. I’m stuck because I haven’t worked for 6 months straight to work something out with the bank. I REALLY don’t wanna wait and go into the winter with a new car. I’d like something asap. Not to mention… I have a buyer for my car so if I can’t find anything new I’m stuck with what I got. I don’t think ANYONE would take the car after another 6 months to a year of driving it.

It really depends on you though, if you’re getting steady income, and it’s not eating up your entire paycheque, maybe you should look for something else? I know 04 Z’s go for mid 30s, you can even find M3’s around 35-38k 
obviously try to live within your means, and your priorities though.
As for your dad’s car, how reliable is it? if it’s going to last you a least a 3-5 years, $5400 a pretty good deal. When you’re done the payments, is the car actually yours to own? Or are there an additional purchase cost? Cause you could consider the trade in value of the car as well. If when you trade in this I30, you can get say $6-8k for it, you’re actually making money off this car.
anyways, if you have more questions, i’ll try to answer them. I’m no guru at car shopping myself, but i’ll try to throw in my 2 cents for you to decide.

The car is pretty reliable. Its got about 220 000 k on it though which is why I’m really considering not getting it. I put about 30k on a car each year. Theres no way the car would last me even 3 more years without work put into it at that point (I assume). Its in pretty good condition.
Also yes after the last 5400 is paid the car is mine. No additional costs or anything I then own the car.
do you know the trade in value of the car? If it’s more that $5400, then it’s totally worth it to just drive this as a stop gap until you’ve worked long enough to either get line of credit from the bank, or get the dealership to approve their loans/lease for you. What kind of maintenance costs does the I30 have? Are the tires/brakes in good enough shape to last you in the mean time? Fluids are ok?
