Does anybody know what it costs to get car ownership from the states? My uncle said I could have his old car, on the condition that I go to NY and pick it up. It’s a BMW, so I dont think I’ll be able to pass up this offer, but can anybody whos dealt with car transfers and such (Oh hi Poeta!), tell me what I’m looking at?
Based on what Quan was telling me last time about buying cars in the US, its really cheap… well, compared to buying anything in the overpriced Canadian market.
http://www.riv.ca/english/html/how_to_import.html
Looks to me like it’ll be a 200 dollar import fee and a small mountain of paperwork. There is also a possible 12% sales tax since the car was made outside of north america. . . and a 100 dollar tax since it has an air conditioner.

This site says there’s an additional 8% tax when you’re in ontario (PST ftl).
PS - Taxes are based on this. . .
"Retail sales tax
You must pay sales tax when you buy a used vehicle privately. The amount of tax is on either the purchase price or the vehicle’s wholesale value, whichever is more.
What is the ?wholesale value??
Wholesale value is based on the Canadian Red Book, which lists the wholesale and retail values of used vehicles. This book is an accepted industry standard used by car dealers, insurance companies and other provincial governments. "
So since I’m guessing you’re buying cheap or free it seems. . . you better check up on this wholesale value. The 12% tax is 6% canadian and I believe 6.1% US and might have to be paid as duty at the border. Check out the RIV website and find out.
PPS - If you’re wondering, I already had half of this looked up the night after Quan told me its cheaper to buy in the states.
You said were you on the pill! You better be paying for the abortion you fucking jew.
Am I the only one that noticed Gerjay put actual effort into a post?
Could’ve taken that right off RFD
looking at this paperwork is putting me on life tilt
Yeah, I avoided looking at that, I can’t stand paperwork in general and I’m sure its a lot considering you’re avoiding so many taxes. The government has a way to punish you for saving money. . .
Me and Matt own Simpsons Trivia.

I got halfway through the second stage, then just gave up at -50 lives
Gerjay, if you want to save the hassle of all the paper work. There are companies that import cars for you for a fee. You still save some money, but obviously not as much as if you did the paper work yourself. I’ve got a couple of friends who imported US cars and they said it wasn’t overly difficult. You just need to prepare all the paperwork ahead of time.
