Saturn->PSX Controller converter

Hey ReKleSS,

Thanks for the response.
I thought the Vcc connection looked weird.

I was going to try and make one but I’m so glad that you’ve decided to start selling yours. Saves me the trouble of building a programmer and finding a friend with a PC that has a parallel port on it.

Add me to the list of potential buyers. I’ll take one as soon as you’re done.

bm_ss

just wondering how these little babies are coming along.

I’m a slack bastard and tend to forget deadlines. Anyway, all the converters are wired up (…and have been for about a month). Chips aren’t programmed yet because I intend to offer choices of button layouts.

Some new compatibility information:
-Doesn’t work with the PS2->X360 converter because it doesn’t behave as a dualshock (so no 360 twinsticks)
-Doesn’t behave properly with the InPin ps2->ps3 converter (glitches badly, and I don’t have one so I can’t debug it)
-L3 and R3 can be mapped, but whether or not it works is dependent on the game. VF4 works, GGXX doesn’t.

So, I’m ready to sell these. I’ve only got 9 handy, and probably enough parts to build one or two more if I can find PSX extension cables or sacrifice my development rig.
First: Anyone who’s expressed interest in a PM or this thread, I’ve reserved one converter. I’ll send out PMs, if I don’t get a response in a week I’ll let someone else at it. I count 8 so far, and at least one from shmups, so for now… there are no more for sale. PM me if you want one anyway, just in case.

Just fiddling around with them, the connectors are very cheap and nasty. This is an issue with the crap converters I used as a base. They work, but it’s not nice.

My original plan was to charge US$20 each, but after looking over my costs… I’d have to charge >$30 each to actually make back all my costs (I’m being slightly dodgy here, I’m including an oscilloscope in these costs… I needed it for this project, but it will get more use later). Therefore, I’m going to bump it up to $25 each. Shipping to anywhere outside Australia will be at cost (about US$7 to the US, check Auspost for elsewhere). I’m hesitant to sell more than one to anyone because there are so few to go around.

The control configurations I have available are the normal saturn pad (C/Z/L/R are L1,R1,L2,R2) and the Capcom layout (C/Z/L/R -> R1,R2,L1,L2). I also have a variant of the Sega layout with the PS button moved to start+X, so it doesn’t get in the way of a soft reset. If you want anything else I can look into it, but there are technical restrictions. It’ll be $5 extra for any non-trivial custom layout.

Also, I have 4 cut-off male saturn connectors. Let me know if you want one or more, for a UPCB or whatever.

I meant to address this before, but I disagree with Ikagi-chan’s breakup of costs. If you already have soldering iron the parts should come to less than $15, shipped from futurlec. I’m not sure about the availability of extension cables, but they’re not expensive. If you do decide to build one yourself I’ll offer whatever assistance I can.

I’ll buy 2 ideally mate, if ya got 'em! Capcom button layout. Let me know, cheers.

Reckless, I sent you a PM for two as well for capcom layout (C/Z/L/R are L1,R1,L2,R2). Looks like Michael Haynes and I are competing for HSS-0130 purposes

I got your PM. I’d like to wait the one week before confirming both of them, to see how many are actually going to move - the way things are going now it won’t be a problem.

Will it work with the PS3 with the real converteer??

That’s the reason I’m also getting it…

Reckless, cool, just let me know.

Dunno which converter you’re referring to. If it works with a purely digital controller (PSX controller, HRAP1, etc.) then it should be fine. I can tell you it works with this adaptor and doesn’t work with the InPin.

Reckless,

Just sent you a PM and email response.

Ok, just received my two converters (Capcom layout) from Reckless and here are my findings. Build quality was pretty good, far more professional looking than Reckless had indicated in his previous posts! On to performance…Tested on official sega saturn virtua stick pro HSS-0130 (dual panel), no noticeable lag, start macro (start and A) worked fine, both sides 1 player and 2 player worked fine. Official sega saturn virtua stick HSS-0136 (single panel), no noticeable lag, macro works fine, each turbo function worked as expected. U.S. release ASCII Saturn Stick (Item No. 5840), no noticeable lag, macro works fine. Official Virtua stick US release version (looks like HSS-0104 but black), first try, everything seemed to work as expected but weird thing was that I could press the start button out-right and it would start the game. Normally the start button is mapped to the macro of Start and A. Once in game, I tested the turbo functions and weird things started to happen. At first A wouldn’t register turbo, then all buttons and stick would not function. Resetting the PS2 and trying again and still no functionality. I switched back to the virtua stick HSS-0136 and retested that and the adapters were working fine. Switched back to the US version of HSS-0104 and this time the macro of Start and A worked fine to start a game and all buttons and all turbos worked after that. Don’t know what the deal was with that but I’m not too concerned since I will be mainly using this with the HSS-0130 dual stick. I haven’t tried any official Saturn pads (Batarang or newer V2 model) or the Virtual On Saturn Twin Stick or the Saturn Mission flight Stick. I do have them but I don’t have any compatible games on the PS2 to test the latter of the controllers. Overall, Reckless’ work exceeded my expectations and would definitely recommend his work. Tested on PS2 version 4 (phat model). Works in MCFreeBoot menus, works in HDLoader menus. Tested game was SFAC. Thanks.

I did notice that occasionally they would play up after being connected - I couldn’t get it to occur on demand, so I figured it was uncommon enough to leave it alone. Unplugging the PS2 end and putting it back in usually fixes it. As for build quality… they look fine externally because I’m reusing cases from other converters, and internally there’s not really much there.

Mine are working fine, love the fact they’re in the old PS Converter cases! Just binned my old ones  ReKleSS 10/10 mate, fast delivery too. Cheers

Hi, Rekless I’d be happy to buy 2 of these from you. I think you have these for sale at shmups at the moment? Could you pm me the price + postage(in AUD) to Sydney please

Thanks:bgrin:!

ReKleSS - you never got back to me…I want one the Capcom Layout

Interested in purchasing this converter if you’re still around

I sold out of these a while ago. I’m not planning to make any more. I’m still willing to help if anyone wants to try building their own.

Thanks for chiming in. I just recently picked up one of your converters from the Trading Outlet. I bet you weren’t intending for these things to become rare/valuable.

I don’t personally have the resources to produce these, but I’d be damned happy to see a batch of them out there considering the overpriced nature of the Saturn PS2 pads.

If you don’t mind could you post the chip specs, code, programmer used, etc. so that someone like Toodles, ToToTEK, etc. could crank them out?

I linked the details in the first post. I’ve just cleaned it up a little, but it probably needs more clarification.

I posted on the tototek forum about this and mentioned the code is freely available - as far as I can tell nothing came of it.

To me, the main problem with producing these is that soldering in a bunch of wires is too boring. The cases I used are also fairly expensive once they’re shipped to Australia (about $9 iirc). I’d be happy to program a bunch of chips if someone else wants to do the work building them and sourcing parts, but the programming is the easiest part.

hrm i may be interested in funding part of it if someone like hint kyle wants to do the soldering

what part of australia are you from? i lived in rural victoria for about 6 years
