Saskatchewan Players The Time Is Now!

I am proud to announce that we got to kick start our PS3 exclusive Saskatoon Street Fighter 4 Super League this weekend. We had a good showing of 8 people and got to duke it out in exciting ?best of 3/best of 3? round robin fashion.

We are looking to have sessions bi-weekly and a tournament to end it off on the 4th session. Brackets will be based on the results of the initial 3 round robins. With 8 people, we will most likely have everyone qualify for the 1st tournament, but if we have any new inclusions in the future it may move towards qualifying only the top 8 or moving people into divisions.

For the 1st tournament, there will be a $5.00 buy-in with 1st and 2nd place finishers taking home money. It?s a small prize at first but it?s just to see how things go. As more interest is generated we can move towards bigger buy-ins and more people entering.

The question of segregating consoles in our already small SF4 community was brought up and this is how I feel: Being a PS3 padslinger myself, I think it can difficult and unfair to have a PS3 and Xbox padslinger have to square off on either system. So in the spirit of competition and to maintain high quality of play, I think it would be best to keep the two consoles separate. However, if you use stick and you would like to be included into our standings, let me know and we can probably accommodate you if people are willing to lend out their sticks for matches. I?m thinking we can still make room for 1 or 2 more people, so please let me know if you are interested.

After our first session our top 3 in standings are:

1st Rick (7-0)
2nd Curtis (5-2)
2nd Jonas (5-2)

It is still pretty close in the rest of the standings so hopefully as we progress through more sessions, the skill levels will close and we?ll have some more exciting matches. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the next session.

On a different note, my PSN ID is: EldonMa if anyone is interested in having any online matches.

Great games last night guys. I’m glad we were all able to get together and get some solid matches in. I look forward to the upcomming sessions.

Eldon: You seem to have alot of free time today =p New job must be pretty sweet

Good shit eldon, I wasn’t to sure about the seperation between the scenes but after seeing ur arangment and Ozzy’s arangment I think this will work out perfectly for everyone’s interest. I forgot to add josh to the 360 side lol, so it looks like we have a good and steady number for both scenes. On that note, since the tourny is every saturday if anyone wants addition games on sunday feel free to me know as I’m always free for games on the weekend.

Guhhhhh…

Just posting so people know I’m here.

Alright cool, look foward to the scene finally starting to grow.

… Sigh. Honestly? Worst. Idea. Ever. GG Saskatoon “scene”. GG “spirit of competition”. Learn to adapt. just like you do with match-ups. -,-

I’m done.

Padslinger’s can’t just play on them six buttons or what?

I personally think keeping the two consoles seperate isnt that bad of an idea. Just because there are 2 seperate events doesnt mean we still cant get together every so often and have one big event with both consoles. As it is now, it looks like there is a nice amount of players for both consoles, and im sure the numbers will grow. The trouble I see with running a multi-console events for the same game is the scenario when u have 2 gamepad players needing to play against one another when they are both not of the same console. Also, if we were to combine both consoles, there would be quite abit of ppl, which means we would need to find a pretty big venue that would be able to host all of us. I dont think Eldon was implying that the ps3 and 360 players should never get together, but instead to just have smaller events based on console just to reduce a little bit of hassle. I’m sure ppl would be willing to play on the opposing console, but the trouble with that is that if they are gamepad users, they might not be able to play their best. Personally, I would always want to be able to play against someone at their best and as well I would not want to be hindered by the type of controller I use when I play someone else.

Just my thoughts…

Yeah! Compared to my old job… Show up later, leave earlier, more money. I took a stroll around downtown with my boss at 3pm today. Sweet action indeed!

This is kinda what I was getting at. I can play on stick but because I’m not good at it… all you’ll get is a zoning heavy Ryu with footsies. Either that or I’ll show you how good I am at turtling with Balrog.

You adapt, play on PS3. If you’re a stick user you won’t even need to adapt. If you’re a padsingler…go eat a dick! Why should I have to hop on your console 'cause you like using a clearly inferior xbox pad?

Let me explain it this way, running 2 seperate venue’s for the consoles not only makes it easiar to organize for our events but it is also more practical since it is easiar on the person who has to host. We won’t need as much set-up’s and it’s less of strain for the guy who has to make the brackets and keep track during the roundrobins.

Incase no one knows the format for both events, basically it is a roundrobin style rotation where everyone will face off agaisnt everyone in a"best of 3" 2 round match. They are then ranked in accordance to the amount of victories and losses they have earned, afterwards the casuals ensue.

I forgot to mention that I’m done.

Good luck.

Bleh

You know… you guys could just play on the pc version. Allowing botht he ps3 and 360 players to play with each other. That or all learn stick and get a stick for both systems. or Lend and share the arcade sticks?

The idea of splitting up the community into “ps3/360” could potentially be detrimental to your community. Also try to find as many new players as you can… they will prolly be the future of your city. If you guys have the sapre doe. try to go for a brawl/sf4/blazblue tournament. Get it on the radio or get in the paper. I bet if you tried to put up flyers at schools and what not, you’d get allot of new commers. You’d be surprised by how many people play the game in your city and aren’t aware of the community that your trying to grow.

Just imo my friends.

Maybe even doing a launch tournament for tekken 6 or street fighter 4 with tekken in it could get the ball rolling. Also possibly getting a freeforums forum going would help.

Maybe doing a tournament with a starter pot?

Just some ideas to throw out there fellas.

Luhmies… don’t be done =)

Wow, you guys gave up before you even started. In no way am I trying to break-up your precious SF4 community. I was just looking to start something small that was a little bit more organized. The people that played PS3 seemed like they were cool with the idea, so this is what were working with at the moment.

Sure wed all love to have one big gathering for both consoles, but what are going to do about the venue? How are we going to get all these setups to one location? How much is it going to cost? And I have yet to hear a legitimate solution about our cross-console pad-slinger dilemma other than tough, deal with it.

When I showed up at the first event, I was told 7 setups. When I got to the venue, there were one and a half setups with no PS3. I had to go pick up a 46 LCD and a PS3 and had to move it to the Education Building.

I would love to join this massive community you guys are trying to build, but I dont think much thought or planning was put into it or even if it was a feasible idea. I think baby steps are the best way to go.

I also never said that PS3 people werent allowed to associate with Xbox people ever, and I actually invited Xbox people to join our group. If youre a PS3 guy, feel free to attend the events held by Luhmies or whoever the hell is organizing stuff, but personally I dont feel like moving giant TVs around every week to play Street Fighter.

Flyers were posted all around town and the result was the attendance at the Hi-Tech tournament (which happened to be majority Xbox). So I really dont understand what the big deal is even if PS3 people didnt participate in your gatherings. I think you got more than you can even handle with just the Xbox people in the city.

The lack of set-ups was an honest mistake.

I told Rick I’d be able to bring 3 set-ups for Smash, and he understood I’d be able to bring 5 set-ups for Street Fighter. I couldn’t manage to bring my TV due to my transportation issues, and half of the Smashers canceled last minute, which got rid of the possibility of 2 more Smash set-ups. Rick told me that he’d be bringing 9 people, and that he’d be fine for set-ups. From what I heard, some people offered to bring set-ups, but Rick said they’d be fine.

It was bad communication, and I apologize.

Regardless, I understand how it’s hard to bring set-ups to the university. I’m used to seeing people bring old small TVs to the university, but I didn’t realize that you guys wanted to play on nicer ones. I could be mistaken, but that’s what I understood.

I just wanted to organize this so the two communities - now three - could see each other and eventually host something pretty big at High-Tech or The Cove. It’d be great publicity for all of the scenes.

Anyway, if no one wants to bring set-ups to the university often, I understand completely. I’m not upset, but I am disappointed. I didn’t do much to help last time, but I really wanted to see the communities flourish. I don’t approve of the two console’s scenes splitting, but if that’s convenient, I guess it’s the best.

Meh.

Hey I heard in february when SF4 is released on consoles, that Madcatz is releasing a 6 button fightpad.

6 button fightpad…

6 button fightpad…

6 BUTTON FIGHTPAD.

What happen last saturday wasn’t something that most of us expected…people canceled as the last second which is beyond anyone’s control. In all honesty, I wish we could do massive gathering with all of us being able to fight agaisnt each other but it just simply isn’t possible. Between the 360/PS3 guys, we have 16 dudes…there is no venue big enough that can support that amount of set-ups and people.

I think our scene can still be healthy if we seperate groups, I was thinking of doing freeforums as well shiro so that we can be more orgaized and what not. At any rate let me break it down this way:

PS3 scene has 8 guys

360 scene has 8 guys

Maybe what we can do is that every 2 months we can host a major tourny that features both scenes. When it comes to pad players, the simple alterantive is that the 360 pad players will need to play on PS3 pads. It seems more easiar to learn on PS3 then vice versa so to me that seems like areasonable solution. We will continue doing the ranking roundrobin system we started on sunday during the PS3 gathering to help us set-up the brackets for the official money tourny.

The answer is very simple. If venue/tv’s are a problem, make a student group. You will get to use a room when ever you need it. All you need to do is book it in advance. You can also get sponsored to do events and what not.

Also… I don’t live in Sask. I’m just trying to help out the people I know who are trying to get something going. Considering I did this same thing 2 years ago and now our scene is bumping and yours can be to.

And splitting a new scene in half is dumb, get real man. Your scene is too small to split it half!
