I agree with Chao in the sentiment about the cost. Personally, if there were a MEMBERSHIP fee, and once that fee was paid it was free or almost free, then I would be OK with it. But, $10 a week is $40 a month (on average) and is better spent on three to four days of food than paying to play a game I have at home… especially when I can invite people over to play with me.
The venue might be nice, as long as things like TV latency can be overcome. I would consider that a plus. I can’t think of any other true benefits, though, than maybe the possibility of becoming easier to notice (since it is happening at an open venue rather than a closed house).
I do think that making money off of what should be a friendly and competitive scene is a bit outrageous. All of us that have organized and offered our places have done so for free. If we started charging $5 or whatever to come, would anyone really show up? Unless that money went toward pizza that everyone got, I doubt it.
Also, since Saskatoon really isn’t well-know or a desired visitation location, I think shooting that high for an entry fee is asking too much. Personally, the $10 we had for the tournament was perfect for what Saskatoon typically has. If the scene grows to the degree that we do have many people and seating may become limited, then I could see a higher price point becoming a better deterrent to bring only motivated competitors.
However, a venue fee is sometimes OK (and necessary), though, but it shouldn’t be something outrageous or cut into the prize pot. The rewards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the last Hi-Tech tournament were bland at best. Money is the best reward and I feel it should always remain a greater portion of the entry fee than anything else associated within it (maybe 10% venue, 10% organizer, 80% pot or something close to that; a $20 entry fee would net $2 venue, $2 organizer and $16 pot per entrant which would add up quickly).
Just my thoughts…

Reallllllll business-like. Almost makes me want to show Hi-Tech EXACTLY what you are saying so they can decide on whether or not you’re appropriate to be in a “leadership” role…
Also, this -deeply- offends me. You CONTINUE to poke at Allison, and now you ALSO group others into it. Your allegations and prejudice are becoming more and more the body of your posts since you add them for no real reason but to offend and take cheap shots at people. Can you not learn, Rik? I’m leaning heavily towards no…
These things can be considered a form of harassment. -,-
