San Diego Mudd Club Thread

maybe mudd club should start selling boba then.

hahaha, now you’re on to something :woot:

I think we have a winner!!!

but on the serious tip…

$2 entry fee seems perfect.
it covers maintenance for the games not only the fighters.
it’s called mudd “CLUB”. of course there’s going to be fees.

I wouldn’t mind paying more, I just think these fighter games should be 25c because people would end up playing at plaza, or chula or somewhere else if it were 50cents or more.
thats all.
2-3dollar entry.
25c fighters.

and boba.

My Two Cents:
I just read the last two pages. I see all stand points of everyone. Honestly, I’m cheap as hell so if he’s willing to lower the price then I’m all for it. In my opinion though, BoRVeGETA makes some very good points.

I really think a lot of people are underestimating what exactly this place is doing and what it takes to do it. It’s a business. Anyone opening up a business is out to make money.

First of all, This is more than an arcade. They have arcades, PC’s, and random other things. From what I understand its very spacious and nice. So being in San Diego I’m sure the rent is expensive as hell. So thats his first bad expense but he also has multiple customer demographics going. This place is not here to cater to JUST US fighting game fans. The fact that he’s even willing to bargain with us is GREAT. Take into account what he’s doing.

First you have PC users.
So take into account what the owner of this place is spending. I’m sure the PC’s cost no less than probably 1k a system because he has to be running everything at their best. What happens if the guy wants to get good seating for the PC users? Those chairs are not cheap. Along with nice monitors, buying the games, and OC12 internet connection for the store to prevent lag. That is definitely not cheap.

Then two types of arcade gamers. I’m going to separate DDR players from everyone else.

So first DDR players.
Do you know how much a DDR machine costs? Try this:

List price is 20k. If he buys two? Ouch.

Then you have typical arcade goers.
Really nice arcade cabinets run between 3-5k. Most places have several machines. If you buy the super nice cabinets and they hit 5k a pop. Not very cheap.

Then this guy decided to try something new and buying that “MindBall” game.
http://www.bio-medical.com/product_info.cfm?inventory__imodel=mindball&gclid=CMLYsZGk3IsCFRMRZwodvHqIWw

20k again? Just to be different. Ouch.

So come on now all this totaled is heavy on the pocket book. Also, this guy has to pay different kinds of taxes and any kind of extra bills that flow with opening a business.

Now as I see it, the PC users and DDR plays have a slight right to complain. PC users pay by the hour and probably buy random snacks they know they are going spend their day there. DDR players roll in with towels, sweats, and sports drinks. They treat the place like a gym. They make camp they will probably be there all day.

On average fighting game fans roll in for maybe a few hours and only play a few games but fighting game fans are always paying the least everywhere you go compared to DDR players and PC players.

From a business stand point fighting game fans are the least common denominator.

So here’s the thing. He’s trying to pay his bills. He doesn’t have to care about us. At all. He can spend that same money used to buy Street Fighter cabs and buy more PC’s or something. Instead he is trying to aim at our demographic.

Bottom line is he doesn’t have to give a damn about us. However, the coolest fucking part is this guy does listen!

So early on when this guy didn’t have crap for fighting games we asked if he could pick them up. So he does. Then we ask for better cabs and good sticks. So he does that for the most part. (From what I understand he got “good” stuff but not the “best” stuff)

None the less he’s catering to us and trying to adjust his prices while still trying to maintain his needs. So TWO dollars to get in is something to complain about? Its not like he’s saying he’s charging us TWO dollars for fun. He says he will use the money to maintain the equipment. I don’t know about you guys but isn’t this something we’ve all been asking for from an arcade?

People in SD go to FFA and AI which is easily 50 bucks in gas. That should instantly be enough reason to be ok with a two dollar entrance fee.

I mean this is turning into a dumb rant. So all Im saying is cut the place some slack. Statistically most new business go under in 3 years or less. I dont know about you but I REALLY miss Golden Token. So now SD has a new arcade and hes listening to us. So help the guy out and pay just a little more than normal. This guy seems reasonable. Im sure over time once hes got his bills established and his monthly to quarterly profit projections worked out to the point everything is predictable he will probably be easier to bargain with.

I would say the BEST piece of leverage we can give ourselves is simple. We come in and pay the guys costs as long as its only slightly above reasonable. After doing that for a while and showing exactly how HUGE our community is and how much they are willing to dedicate themselves to a good arcade. I would say then we can bargain.

Right now all we are saying is Yea we will come if you get this and do this. As far as I have read and seen we have yet to prove that. What happens if he did do everything we asked and nobody shows up? He fucked. From his point of view thats not a worth while risk.
Sorry if this was stupid. Im just bored at work. I just feel for the guy. I pulled out a loan because I wanted to open up an arcade. Instead I opened my own studio because arcades seriously are way expensive.

p.s. Boba would be awesome. :lovin:

Tenchi makes good points. It’s hard as hell to make an arcade run profitably these days. Overhead costs are nuts, especially electricity which just keeps going up. That’s why mall arcades are almost all dead in most parts of the country, it’s just not cost effective. I think as players we have to be willing to pay the entrance fee. $2 is something I think we have to be willing to suck it up and just accept.
50 cents per game is excessive though. Someone better at math than me can write some equation to show this, but it’s pretty much already proven that games that cost 25 cents make more than games that cost 50 cents simply because fighting game players (especially those who aren’t top players) aren’t willing to dump off money that fast. A fighting game arcade makes the most money when large groups of people are there and playing. The machine is running at max.capacity and people are having fun just hanging out and willing to spend more since it’s not all at once. So really an arcade should do whatever it takes to build as much traffic as possible.

If he’s willing to lower the price to 25 cents, we have to make a definite committment to supporting the place and showing that we’re willing to work with him. Whoever passes suggestions along to the management should tell him this. If he’s willing to put the fee at $2.00 entry, 25 cent games, we’ll be willing to move our bi-weekly tournaments to there as well as holding a couple of bigger pre-Evo tournaments there like the one Gene wanted to have at Nickel a few months ago. I think this seems pretty fair and would also give us a real place to practice. I think this is the main place we should be working on for suggestions. We can want the fees lowered all we want but like tenchi says, if we don’t show that we’re willing to give something back also, it doesn’t make that much business sense for him to just do whatever we ask.

I dunno, just my 2 cents. I hope it happens though. San Diego hasn’t had one “main” place to play since like 2002, when everyone would go to Nickel. These days, some people are at Nickel, some people are at Plaza/Chula and some people hardly ever go out to play anymore. I hardly ever play a bunch of people who are “SD” just because we all play at different places. If the fees were lowered I could totally see this place being like Nickel in the old days, and I’d be willing to come pretty often. Like I said, just my 2 cents.

i honestly just think that people wont show up that often if everytime they go they have to drop 15-20 bucks. my main reason for going to an arcade is competition. so yeah mudd clubb will have dope sticks and all that shit, but what good is that if youre the only guy playing.

it doesnt matter, it is what it is. i heard mudd club is getting their 3s cab today, so i might drop by if they get it.

i’ll be coming by today if someone can confirm the arrival of the cabinet(s). i will almost definately unless an emergency arrises, be coming wednesday for the grand opening regardless of the fighting cabinets to play either derby owners club or pwn some nubs in dota or wow:tbc if they got it.

and boba! jk:looney:

exactly… i used to go to mission to play good ppl and get some experience but it was 50 cents… thats why i stopped going… It was too far + 50 cents. but had really good players. now if it was 25 cents i would go down more often. i’m jus saying this as a Losing Veteran . and about the entrance fee. i dont care anymore. hahaa. jus plz 25 cents!

hopefully i can win more in this arcade:sad: haha

they ain’t ready for that SHIT!! hahaha. lemme know when ya want that av too.

What a jerk

whens the grand opening? and is anyone going on Fri?

-Matt

I’ll emphasize this again, like my friend and I stated while talking at work, this is no place to pick up on bitches. PERIOD

“I’ve seen a bunch of arcades come and go, and im willing to bet the majority of them died out due to the fact that they couldnt keep up with expenses. The only arcade that ive seen actually have a chance to survive was the Game Center off of 3rd and F in chula vista… and that was because it wasnt an arcade it was a pool hall.”

I’m with you bro, you and I can relate. Good times were had there. And what happens? pigs occupy space

“I would say the BEST piece of leverage we can give ourselves is simple. We come in and pay the guys costs as long as its only slightly above reasonable. After doing that for a while and showing exactly how HUGE our community is and how much they are willing to dedicate themselves to a good arcade. I would say then we can bargain.”

I agree to a certain extent, if in fact this dood comes to a conclusion of being overwhelmed by our community then hell, .25 shall be permanent otherwise forget it. This is on behalf of all here who would agree.

Damn this shit is like reading a book!!!

Good points everyone. The entrance fee (or as I would like to call it, the maintenance fee) shall stay.

I’m super excited for the grand opening, and seeing lots of the old crew in one arcade like the old days.

I think we all made our point…

Anyhoo! Anybody gonna check it out tomorrow??

Come on Matt, you’re a baller didnt you like donated 10 bucks to the Genghis foundation? hahah JK <3

I’ll be going friday, lets get some stuff confirmed, and make that place tourney ready.

suck it in. its only $2. you can find that shit under your car seats. $2 is every time a cherry switch or button breaks, not to mention the rest of the cabinet. arcades have a huge overhead. Golden Token is the perfect example. $2 is nothing compared to driving up north to find a decent arcade with decent comp. if they can have one up north, why can’t we have one here.

however, 25cents games do make more money than 50cents games. cheaper price is more enticing. sorta like, cheaper practice = more practice. but it’s understandable if they do make it 50cents, shit, they gotta make their money back first before being nice.

so yea, stop whining about $2. you pay that at nickel city anyways, and when was the last time anything worked there?

…that’s my $2
