Samurai Shodown Sen aka Edge of Destiny

Picked this up yesterday played for like 2 and half hours today.

Got my ass kicked by some dude named Pigg.

Yeah thats been my experience so far.

This game reminds me of Bushido Blade. A lot.

By having a half lifebar slashes and unblockable cowboy char? Dont worry, those are quickly compensated with juggles, generic grab, and mashing

I have the pleasure of owning this less than fantastic game. I really feel like a few small changes to the way the game was designed would have fixed many of the problems.

  • Characters and weapons have no weight. There is no way that Wan-Fu or Walter should move as fast as they do. If a character has a large weapon, they shouldn’t be able to swing it around effortlessly like Garros.
  • Recovery from moves shouldn’t be almost instant. It doesn’t matter how difficult the move is to perform, I can snap back to blocking almost instantly after a move. It really makes the risk minimal for the move purely dependent on the start-up. On that note…
  • Over half the movelist is useless. Why use a move that does great damage when you can use a fast move that beats out the majority of the moves in the game? More balance between start-up and recovery would have made this much better.
  • Animations are bad. There are many times you’ll see larger characters crouch and it doesn’t look like it. There have been times when I’ll horizontal slash right through the character model of a rolling Garros or Golba. It also makes things difficult for the high/low game as you can’t tell when the enemy is going for a low attack half the time.
  • Wake up game is terrible. You’re totally vulnerable when you quick rise. This isn’t the bad thing. The worse thing is that 9 times out of 10, you’ll be left facing backwards and taking a good chunk of your life off because you hit a button when you landed.
  • Draco. Whoever thought it was a good idea to give a character a ton of almost instant unblockable attacks was out of their mind. I mean, the character gives tons of tells to sidestep, but even then, you can’t always sidestep in time. Why on earth does he have an 8 hit unblockable juggle is beyond me.

There are plenty of things this game did right. Love the art style, the new characters, and the way they moved characters to this new 3D style. Galford plays like Galford, Ukyo plays like Ukyo.

If a sequel is made, I hope they change the suck and give more great.

What is funny is that in other SS games, its was the recovery that mattered. Haohmaru’s weak and strong slashes had similar startups but strong slash (which did huge damage) suffered from terrible recovery, so it was 100% punishable on whiff/block, which made you think 10 times before using it.

I tried SSS at the Gamefrog tournament in NC. The game seems pretty fun.

The seemingly ultra fast attacks reminded me of this game:

Someone cares to make a video with raged qcf+BC moves of all characters? You know, like nearly every other fighting game has videos with demonstrations of all supers, on youtube.

Ive played ll pig ll, he is ok but he plays online style. He used takchiyo vs me. Takechiyo is just a high low game character , so online he is alittle cheap. Also sogetsu teleport is pretty cheap online. The more delay the more time it take’s you to turn around. Normally when you play sen offline sogetsu is open after teleporting. Online he has slight hit advantage after teleporting. So basicly if he just keeps teleporting you cannot hit him unless you counter him.

ANy ways im gona get on some sen today ill see you guys around.

You saying I am playing “online style” is basically another way of saying i’m using lag tactics. “Takechiyo is a high/low character, so online he is cheap.” By your definition, the whole cast is cheap. Also, I find it funny you tried to use Takechiyo as well. That’s one thing about online play though; people are quick to discredit another player.

hahahaha

This game. *This game. *

takechiyo was the first character i learned because i was told by shinik(japanese arcade sen player) that he has best high low game in the game… Its not that i dont think your a ok player. Its just it doesnt take much to win with takechiyo online. I dont spam low atacks to win matches. I dont care about winning that much. I would rather just play the game how its played. Oh and btw i only know how to use 3 character takechiyo being one of them. So i had a 1/3 chance of being him. Like i said your ok but i didnt send you a freind request. If i recall it was because you spammed two moves. Anyways i could careless if you dislike me , you play like someone who need’s to win. And online i am not interested in playing these kind of poeple.

The thing about online is it make’s bad players think they are good. Not manny poeple play sen why play like alittle bi*** I know what takechiyo’s low atacks look like but online you cannot block them on reaction. I wish i had saved the replay vs you cause it was almost comical. It was just you tripping me over and over again. So there is your credit guy.

this thread just gets saltier and saltier :coffee:

Game doesn’t look too good. The previous 3D Shodown games look all right though.

So he only kept going low on you and you kept getting hit? Can’t you block low?

The best way to block in samurai shodown sen is to block high and block lows on reaction. The low atacks are alot slower than the high and med atacks . So its easier to primarley block high in general. Samurai shodown sen is not a high low game. Afew characters have a high low game style. For the most part the game is about counters, dodging and parry’s. But online you lose all of this. Its to bad but any 3d game online will have this problem i guess (sc4). Input delay is a deal breaker with 3d games. All you cna do is try to play the way you would play offline. Offline you couldnt spam two atacks and win. I could parry or dodge alot easier.

Ummm if low attacks are slow then what’s the problem with blocking them? How is Sen not a high/low game? Explain that to me. Most fighters tend to be high/low/throw mixup based so I would love to hear the reason why Sen isn’t the same.

I already told you why i cant block the low atacks. There is input delay, i press down and a full second later i duck. That was only vs ll pig ll we had bad connection (2 bars).

Its not a high low game because like i already said low atacks are not fast. So most characters best atacks are the med and high atacks. Speed seems to be really important in SS sen. Good sen players dont leave openings. So the only way you are gona hit them is to counter, parry or dodge thier atacks. Its the only way to hit a good opponent. And this is how most samsho games are.

I guess all the Japanese matches I’ve been watching have been telling me lies then. I see high/low being used a lot in many matches.

LOL, its not that they " have been telling lies". Its just i dont think you understand the game. Have you ever played? SOme characters have good high low game , maybe about 3. The rest of the cast does not. Ukyo is a good example, do you see japanese players using alot of low atacks with him? No , you dont because ukyo’s best atacks are meds and highs. anyways i cant explain it any better than that. Every game has high low game but its not what samurai shodown games are about. And honestly its why most anericans suck at samsho. They dont understand this. High low game will only take you so far in samsho. You must learn to counter, dodge and parry(sword deflect). samsho is not mvc , it’s not about abusive offense high low game, but online it is. the end
