Its not. That was easy.
The first month SEN is out in usa it will be played alot online. This happens with every new xbox live game becuase of rankings. Even if poeple dont enjoy the game that much they will enjoy trying to place high in rankings. After the first month no one will play SEN… maybe. That is my prediction.
25% of poeple that play fighting games on Xbox live just do it to feed the ego. They will buy sen just to try and get in 1st:) That reminds me i have to be ready to get cheated on
MAME 0.137 fixes the “barcode glitch” which previously made some 2D layers super stretched, resembling a barcode.
This fixes the following SSAZ issues:
-After 1st stage of single player mode is cleared, Yuga’s face now shows properly.
-Backgrounds on 3rd (portal) and 4th (fire) arenas are now displayed correctly (so now you can see the portal, city, etc)
-Mist on 9th (gandara plant) arena and moving clouds on 10th (yuga’s) arena are now displayed correctly

Sorry, but how is this “good news”? Sen is garbage through and through. I think the only people who will enjoy are those who either never played and/or don’t like Samurai Shodown. And barring a big media push, I don’t see Sen selling big numbers. In fact, I think it’ll bomb hard, like it did in JPN arcade/console. Aside from the violence, it has no redeeming qualities whatsoever (and I know that violence sells, but even Mortal Kombat needs hype and advertising to sell in addition to brand recognition; SS isn’t anywhere near as well known as n MK, and if there are no TV commercials for Sen, it will be deader than dead). I’m not telling you not to buy it and enjoy it, but if you do, I’m sure you’ll be in a tiny minority.
Shroud:
I disagree: I think anyone who tries Sen will say “fuck this shit” and swear to never buy another SS game again. I certainly don’t see anyone going back to the older games - anyone who wasn’t interested in SS pre-Sen would have wouldn’t be interested in it post-Sen. How many people do think bought KOFXII, didn’t like it, and said “Man this game sucks. I should check out KoFXI and before?”
re: No one playing SS
I don’t know about you folks, but I’ve been spoiled by modern fighters. And by modern fighters, I really mean SFHDR and SFIV. And to clarify that, I’m really talking about playing these games on a modern console, which has the following benefits (not necesarily in this order):
-
Robust online: I can play other people! I’m married with a 15 month old daughter, I don’t have time to play other people in person more than a couple times a year, so online is my only option. SFIV isn’t as good as HDR in this regard, but it’s good most of the time.
-
I can use my TE stick: My old PS2 stick is nearly 10 years old and pretty much falling apart. TE is the new hotness.
-
Only one console needs to be hooked up to the TV (PS3 in this instance): My PS3 doesn’t have backward compatibility (yet?), and while I do still have my PS2 hooked up to my TV, the PS3 is where the action is. I don’t like having multiple systems out if I can help it.
-
Looks good on my TV: A minor point, but it’s nice to play games designed for my TV (42" 1080p Sharp) instead of just blown up pixels with black bars on the sides.
Really, I got SSA last March and I’ve played it maybe 3 times. Now it’s also true that I haven’t touched my PS3 since November (though I’m back on it now thanks to FFXIII), but that’s because Real Life? (aforementioned daughter) gets in the way of me playing in general. But when I do go back, I feel zero incentive to fire up SSA: I have to go back to my older system, with my older clunkier joystick, which looks worse on my TV and, most importantly, I have no one to play with. And with SSFIV on the horizon, as well as HDR and MvC2 to fall back on at any time, my fighting game needs will be full and I don’t see any reason to go back to SS except for shits and giggles. I didn’t get into Tenka when it was new and, from what I’ve played, I’m not fond of the game, and without competition I’m doubly not compelled to get into it. I have more incentive to fire up SS on GGPO (which I’m also not terribly keen on since I dislike playing fighting games on my PC/emulators seriously)
To rectify this and get me interested again, SNK would need to do one of two things: Either 1) release SS games on PSN, preferably with i]proper* netcode, or 2) release a brand new SS game that doesn’t suck, again with proper netcode. The latter would be preferable.
SSA on PS2, good collection as it is, is not enough to start any kind of SS revival or even maintain a dying SS scene. See also: the SF Alpha scene and Alpha Anthology. We need a mondern console release of SS with good netcode to maintain interest (SS2 Live arcade doesn’t count).
Bought it today going to try it out a little later. Remember liking 2 and 4. Got it for the wii since my wife got sticks for it.
Honestly if you are a samurai shodown fan you like ss7(sen). It has alot of the same principals as previous ss titles. I read a review for ss7 done by some site. They said the actull gameplay is fun but matches end in two attacks because of unblockable and hard slash. This is how every samurai shodown game is. If you suck at samurai shodown matches will end very quickly because you cannot make mistakes over and over again. There are no super abusive moves. It looks simple but that is only because you must think so much before you attack. You cant make huge movements vs good opponents. Samurai shodown games arent about flashy moves. They are about timming and patience. And alot of poeple dont have that. This is why poeple who are good at SF pick up samsho and suck at it. Its just alot different than any other fighting game.
What drives me crazy is when poeple say they like ss5. Lol that is a random thought. But i say this because all the years i played ss5 all i ever heard was about how much poeple hate it. About how there are no combo’s and about how the game has no depth. But poeple only felt this way because they didnt understand the game. Another one of my favorite complaints is grab. Scrubs at ss5 say grab is too abusive. But the truth is if you are good at samurai shodown you can turn grab attempts into massive counter combo’s.
The bottom line is samurai shdoown games are more about timming and less about being flashy. And it makes them look more dull because of this.
sen ftw bi%%%%
poeple said the same thing about ss5 and i still really enjoyed it. Obviously i am on a capcom site.
IMO all Sen talk should be posted in Sen thread , which is in one mouse scroll away from you, people.
MAME 0.137u1 is out. You can download GUI version at http://www.mameui.info/
List of changes:
Previous versions of MAME added 3D lighting but too bright, so this one changes level of lighting and character models look not so bleached/white right now (if anything, they look closer to what they were before lighting was implemented).
EDIT: Comparison
http://img718.imageshack.us/i/lightingcomparison.jpg/
Upper picture - MAME 0.136u3 revision, no lighting was implemented yet.
Lower picture - MAME 0.137u1 with lighting in current state after lighting brightness fix
Does this game have a wiki and link to some good match vids on youtube plz! :china:
it actually looks better without the extra lighting to me:wtf:
You can try SNK wikia http://snk.wikia.com/ for basic information on characters (storyline-wise), and also my site http://samuraishodown.kilu.de/ (which is unfinished but game sections up to SSAZ are complete).
If you need something advanced, probably best way is to ask me, using this forum
SSAZ tourney youtube channel is

Actually lighting is needed, because it shows the “3D” part. Without it, characters looks like flat/“cellshaded” in motion, and well, for example insides and outside of Genjuro’s pants will have same luminocity which will look weird.
I would say that the game lacks in shadowing right now, it seems MAME devs learned how to make characters brighter from “light” side, but not much darker on opposite side.
m216:
I liked SSV as well, but then again I loved playing Suija and overpowered Yoshitora. I don’t know why SSV gets all the hate, unless it is indeed because of fighting against overpowered Yoshitora and broken Nothingness mode. I certainly prefer it to IV.
Is Seiger in this? I only play as him in SS games, because he looks like Steve Wilkos, just not as awesome.
Sieger is only playable in Samurai Shodown 2 and 6 (both of which are included in SSA), and he is also present in SS RPG as one of CPU-controlled party members
will we ever see a new 2d SS game i HD? i wouldnt mind seeing some manga/anime characters in it, manji from boti and tessai from ninja scroll would fit the part real well. the thing snk fucked up on was fucking up SS popularity, when ss2 came out it was even more popular than kof 94. after ss2 they just game up on the series and put all their time and efforts into making the next kof game. at times bringing out a good lb or ff game, but still fucking up ss games. ill never forgive snk for what they did to ss, not having a 2d ss on the hyper was their second biggest mistake.
They could still save this series with all the ninja/samurai love right now they could actually bring the series back. It would be interesting if they took a sf3/garou style twist and only brought back important core characters, and added in more new characters. They could look to Samurai Champloo to get an Idea for the soundtrack.
this is do they still have the people to make it work? if the art for the characters (and in game sprites) was done by kita it would immediatly become the best looking fighter around. the original ss games oozed with style (much like darkstalkers imo, but differently ofcourse). something along the lines of ss 2/3 done completely new (the music, bg’s, cept new music and new characters) would be the shit. they do need to show asura and shiki some love though, same for yoshitora, these designs where awesome.
