I’ve been having major trouble on the Sakura vs Viper Matchup and I am looking for a way to improve it. I play Wolfkrone very often and i get slaughtered every time, but it seems like ANY viper on rank will just wtf own me with all the wtf mix up possibilities with the burn kick.
So… with that said, I was wondering if other folks have the same problem and perhaps we can come together to find out different possibilities, OS, or SOMETHING we can do vs viper.
Heres my problem:
opponent is mashing reversal ground burn kicks when i miss a low ground string.
Viper throws you, super jumps over and does either a burn kick, regular HK (unblockable?), or regular HK + burnkick once the HK is blocked
I blocked an air burn kick and Viper still seems to be safe
Viper mistimes a jump and corrects it by using the short burnkick. I end up going for a throw because of the mistimed jump and i will get burnt.
A regular ground burnkick that crosses over when I wakeup.
It is too difficult to react to the burnkick on reaction, and everytime I get close, they can easily EX seismo and there goes all the wake up games again.
I would also like to try c.mk and go underneath a burnkick (unverified), but I would always hold back thinking it could just be a HK instead of a burnkick.
Thoughts? Anyone else having problems? Anyone else wants to rant about viper with me?
I played Wolfkrone’s CViper at Evo online and, and numerous ft10’s with Beyleh (another good CViper player, not as notorious, but still very good nontheless) and I can confirm CViper’s bk mixup game is annoying.
Actually I have the same problems as you listed so I’m kind of curious what Sakuras here think of the matchup. The info in the Sakura matchups thread 2.0 doesn’t exactly do justice.
One thing I love doing against vipers (and any other character with bad wakeup) is abusing empty jump -> cr.lk -> BnB on their wakeup. Train them to block high with safejumps, then go crazy. It’s a great way to make your ambiguous jumpins even more difficult to block
I agree that defense against a good viper is hard but you should not give up on anti-airing. cr.hp is fast enough to beat cross-up burnkicks. you can also do an anti-air option select by blocking just long enough to defend against a j.hk and then press standing hp. if they did j.hk you’ll just block, if they did a burn kick, close hp will usually come out and antiair. of course, they can also change the timing and beat your antiair attempt, so don’t rely on it too much. honestly, it’s just a huge guessing game for both players. if they get super predictable, dash under and punish with a sweep -> ambiguous jumpin
I play Cosmicjourniis, Freesway and my boy Syn Viper’s Viper alot. I noticed from all three that they like to meet you in the air with that knee move (I never play with her so im not sure which kick it is). I beat it out with j.lk or j.mk only if i was air born already. Im not sure if j.lp will stuff it, I’ll check when i leave class today. Also in corner they usually try that burning kick sh#t over and over again. From there I either lp srk and get out from under it then I immediately block. I block because i usually see a tk (usually a low one). I know you can Focus and absorb it but I get anxious and don’t hold it long enough. The only time I do focus and get the hit off is when they do the Seizmo from sweep distance and i’ll catch em and go into that Sak Sh#t.
Sorry if it’s not much help but it’s all i can remember right now i’ll have to look at some of the replays and report more…
Yes, I agree that this becomes entirely a guessing game, but i believe it favors viper a lot more since we have to predict a wider range of options that viper can do against you. At times I feel like its almost like playing a fuerte on wake up. I will try to OS the j.hk to burnkick with the STANDING hp. I’ve always been trying to mash on c.hp so ill have to try that since i never considered close s.hp as an AA.
Besides dealing with bk mixups and CViper pressure… what about how to pressure CViper? Safe jumps are one thing, but how do you cater your blockstrings to say, deal with reversal bk?
Or what about more intricate matchup details? Such as the ideal spacing to stay at, what to look for at full screen, mid range, and close range, specifically what CViper pokes/normals/specials/tactics to look for, how Sakura can counter them, or what Sakura can do to get in and/or set something up, etc.
I did some frame traps with c.lk and c.lp blockstring, paused for a split second and c.fp. That seems to work well and they would think twice to mash that bk reversal.
I’ve got a wolfkrone specific OS. During his blockstings, do the dive kick OS. That dude likes overhead. v_v.
Other tricks I use on him and Latif are wake up st.fierce. If they go for a burn kick mixup, it knocks them out of it or you trade. And the trade puts you out of danger.
cr.strong during blockstings is always of good use because if they try to burn kick out of it, you knock them out of it.
And typically, Vipers love to mash fierce dp and not block on their wake up. So typically, throw the first time and tatsu the next times. Since tatsu will knock them out of wake up burn kick and will give you a counter-hit if they go for ex seismo.
Also, wake up ultra 2 > burn kick mixups on wake up.
And, actually, if you time crouch jab perfectly on her wake-up (a.k.a. meaty), it will hit her reversal BK out of the air. But, if you’re off by a frame or so, the above ultra 1 option select will work.
Also, you could try option select crouch jab > stand HK to stop reversal burn kicks.
^maybe we should make a thread about character matchups, like this one, once a week then compile them when it’s done and put them on the sakura matchups thread?
Sure you can do that but what’s to stop someone then saying, “The info in the Sakura vs C. Viper Matchup thread doesn’t exactly do justice.”?
It jsut seems like a waste of time to me. Anything that anyone can say about C. Viper in this thread can be said in the match up thread. If its not there then its not there. Either add it yourself (you the members/posters/lurkers) or just go by what you know already. Whats the point in people complaining about stuff without trying to do something to change it?
At least you (Immaculate) have a suggestion to try another approach.
