I don’t think it’s that bad unless you’re playing Gief or someone else who can punish you in 2 frames. If it gets blocked you get a bit of chip/meter and can usually get out safely, if it hits it’s a free frame trap or throw. I wouldn’t throw it out often since it’s so stuffable, but it doesn’t hurt much to do it now and then and the threat of it being there can deter people from trying to walk in on you.
No, there are definitely times where you can use them. Even if you never use them in footsies (which is a waste), they are certainly useful in character-specific blockstrings because they are safe against some reversals (ie, sakura will pass under and you can punish)
What do you guys do against bison’s back teleport? I try to os a jump forward sometimes, but I can never punish with cr. fwd. Maybe that’s just me not having actually figured out the timing. Can you tag him with just an os dp?
Same goes for dhalsim I suppose, but I feel like his is easier to punish. I know I can os an ex tatsu, but only the last hit connects.
For Bison and Dhalsim, you can get them both with os hp shouken.
For Bison you can do os ex tatsu, on Dhalsim I’m not 100%, I’m pretty sure you can catch his with os ex tatsu near the corner
Just something I noticed, correct me if I’m wrong:
I find cr. tech xx mk/hk tatsu OS really useful against Rose at close range to catch her back dash, focus back dash, it can also act as a frame trap to catch crouch techs. But her ex. Soul Spiral beats it clean, so mix it up with lk. tatsu frame trap. Once she got pushed back to close-midrange, her cr. mp xx soul spiral is a frame trap that counterhits most of Sakura’s pokes, so keep blocking. But once she got pushed back further enough (slightly out of range of cr. mk), cr. mk should be able to out-poke Rose. Just need to beware of traps like consecutive soul spirals. If the Rose player likes to spam Soul Spirals, then as mentioned in the first post, punish unsafe Soul Spiral on block or whiff or on reaction.
I actually feel like I new this but just completely forgot. Akuma’s teleports you can only punish with an os jump though, right? I apologize for being too lazy to test anything myself at the moment.
You can OS ex shouken Akuma’s teleport.
You would be better off OS jump though, as Akuma can just teleport the other direction putting you fullscreen and loss of a bar or if he has U2, he can punish your OS.
I’ve been having alot of success playing total rushdown against Seth players so Fergus I take back what I said earlier about Sakura vs Seth being in his favour.
I forgot the most important thing; Even though we don’t have spd’s, teleport and fast reversals, Seth should be just as scared of us as we are of him.
Seth is like a one-combo fight, he’s annoying as hell especially if you get knocked down, but if you touch him and capitalize on it it’s pretty much done.
Characters with a high damage output can handle Seth fine.

He is! Which is why a good Seth zones the CRAP out of Sakura!!
Just remember that Seth has the 2nd lowest health and stun in the game (last I checked). Once you touch him, make it into a long meaty combo! The more you hit him, the faster he’ll get dizzy. Rinse and repeat.

So recently I’ve been having much better luck with most matchups, but Gief is still absolutely destroying me. I have no concept of how to approach the matchup. Zoning doesn’t work particularly well, most everything I do footsies-wise gets punished with l.spd, dropping any link ever gets me spd’d, I can’t jump at him pretty much ever, even on knockdown. If I try to cr.hp jumpins instead of l.shou, it seems like really, really often they land and recover before I recover from the cr.hp and I get spd’d again. I don’t even know where to start outside of hoping I can bait them into bad lariats/greenhands to punish with h.shou.
I actually played a Gief here, don’t know if he’s the best gief but he’s definitely the most famous one. I won’t post a link to it though since even though I beat him, it wasn’t the greatest example of how the matchup should be played.
When you cr.hp their jump in and it doesn’t work it means they’re jumping in from a range where your cr.hp whiffs on purpose. At that range, there isn’t really anything you can do except backdash, maybe cl.hp but again you have to judge the range carefully. This goes for every character; you can’t always anti air and against good players they will jump in that range alot so it’s better to block.
In this matchup it’s better to do alot of nothing. Just do alot of walking around outside st.hp/l.spd range and poke occasionally to see how they react. If he’s using SPD alot then you’re throwing out way too many pokes/being too predictable. From what I remember, Gief’s st.mp beats out close range st.hk but loses to our cr.mk. Use fireballs sparingly, AA with lp.sho and used charge fireballs to bait jumpins. Instant jump back hk is pretty good in this matchup.
You should never jump in on gief, that’s asking for a free lariat. I tried doing very early j.hk which sometimes beats lariat but he just delayed it and it beat it clean. J.HP sometimes stuffs lariat but the timing is a bit weird. IMO, I wouldn’t even go for it, it’s not worth it most of the time.
This probably the best video of the matchup. Notice how Uryo is always around st.hk/spd range but hardly ever presses anything.

Thanks!
Another thing to note is Uryo’s spacing and fireball usage when Itabashi has no meter. He stays at a range where he can easily anti air him if he jumps, can whiff punish with st. hk, and throws a fair amount of plasma, without being too predictable, and doesn’t press a lot of other buttons. There isn’t much Gief can do in this situation unless he predicts a fireball to jump, and mean while you’re putting some pressure on, keeping some space, and are able to push Gief towards the corner.
hey guys, I’ve recently decided to pick up Sakura and I really love her. I’m a Ryu main, and I’ve dabbled with plenty of other characters, but Sakura is someone unlike I’ve ever played. I really want to be good with her, combos aren’t a problem, my problem is getting in/playing footsies.
I really don’t know how to get in on my opponent at all aside from jumping in, and I’m not sure what pokes are good. I’ve just been using standing Hk so far, and sometimes Cr. mk into Shouoken if I can do the input. I was just wondering if there’s any advice you guys could give me/tips and tricks to learning how to play as Sakura. I’d really appreciate it.
Standing HK is more or less her best footsies poke, s.MK is solid too. As far as using cr.mk > h.shou, you want to throw that out from the tip of its range and try to get them to walk into it. Neutral jumping is pretty effective as her as well, jumping in outside of a knockdown probably isn’t advisable though.

It’s easy. If you’re fighting someone worth their salt, they know to zone and poke. Simply walk them into the corner. Don’t let them jump over you. After that, pull out your paddle and spank that ass!

I just don’t understand the Rose match. At all. Also, Bison can suck a bag of dicks. I can beat dat ass, I’m just incredibly impatient.
