Oh man. I was having kind of a crummy day until about now. I can enjoy the last 15 minutes of it thanks to you guys.
Can someone provide me with some links of good Sagat players playing HDR? I couldnt find too many of Justin Wong as I heard he plays with him.
Thanks in advance.
As I’ve said in the other thread please ask seb from frame advantage.com to upload the new castle hdr matches Wong beat damdai and thelo with sagat (though damdai went on to beat him for first place in grand finals.)
My match vs Justin Wong wasn’t recorded at all, to my great sadness. It was pretty damn epic.
Justin relied a lot on prediction fierce tiger uppercuts to deal truckloads of damage when I tried to pressure him with headbutts or HHS, along the regular reaction uppercuts against my jump-ins. At first, he whiffed them a lot, since I have a pretty defensive style and attack less often than the average Honda, but he adapted very quickly, and by the end, his predictions were on the spot. He used an effective wait-and-bait strategy and didn’t miss a reaction uppercut once - my only safe jump-ins were those punishing a tiger shot’s recovery.
The obvious thing he did not do was spam a lot of tiger shots - 3 consecutive shots is the maximum I recall him doing, on my wakeup (meaty slow low, fast low, high was the pattern iirc).
I recorded them son, but I don’t have access to something with an sd card slot I’ll get on that soon.
Oh you did?! Awesome, I’m awaiting that one with great hype! :lovin:

^^^^Thanks jiggly. I guess I’ll look at those.
DSP doesn’t use sagat but he’s one of the better players out there so his sagat vids may prove to be interesting:

I’ve seen safe jump vs tiger shot suggested elsewhere, and it’s impossible for Honda to do that on reaction since his jump is too slow. Because of input lag, you would have to start the jump on the same frame that the Tiger Shot animation starts.
^^
By “safe” I mean “did not get uppercutted out of the air”, and of course I didn’t do it on reaction. Honda vs Sagat is mostly about prediction since those tiger shots are way too fast to react to.
Well, I can sometimes react to medium or slow low tiger shots with a fierce headbutt, but not to fast ones.
Well I have been playing with Sagat of late on the psn because my 360 died (actually got my 360 back yesterday). I’ve been playing Sagat because I feel it is going to help with Sim play.
With that it seems I do a lot of standing and waiting when playing with Sagat. Is that typical? Granted I throw out tiger shots and try to mix things up with tiger knees but I have even stopped doing that because people start trying to see patterns. I know people have said when playing with Sagat you have to anticipate what your opponent is going to do. That alone is making playing with Sagat tougher than Sim. But as I said if I can get this anticipation thing down it will make me better not only with Sagat but also Sim.
I’ve gone in training mode to practice combos but it seems I have a hard time pulling them off in matches. Granted the more I play I will get more comfortable but it just seems trying to get combos off is very difficult with Sagat.
I have OCD so we shall see where I get learning him. Hurry up zoolander.
Sagat BnB combo is J.:hk:, Cr.:mk:, :qcf::hk:. Normally stuns. I usually go for this after a knock down.
And yeah, Usually when you’re enemy gets close (or mid-screen), its straight up anticipation dude. Standing and watching like a cat will get you places.
And I’ll add to Jiggly’s post by saying…
TIGER UPPERCUT!!!
You can rush down some characters and get your Tiger Uppercut on, but you also have to know when to wait and lure them in…and Tiger Uppercut them.
But yeah…mostly…you’ll want to make them leave themselves open to be hit by that move right there. The damage is lovely…especially in combos!!!
Sagat’s not really about combos (OJ might disagree with me there). For what it’s worth O. Sagat’s BnB was J. roundhouse, st. short, tiger shot. But R. Sagat can’t cancel the second hit of his st. short so he has to make due with cr. forward (less range). He has plenty of tricks, but at least from what I see, his damage mostly comes from one hit like stuff. Tiger shots. Tiger Uppercut. Wiff tiger knee throw.
Okay good to know man. I have been doing better with him and it seems as I slow down my pace and try to pin down with tiger shots I tend to do better. But as with Dhalsim when opponents get in close it seems to overwhelm Sagat. Granted he has an uppercut but still he can get overwhelmed.
Also is it me but it seems that you have to wait to use the tiger uppercut to almost the last minute. If you dont you either trade or just get stuffed. Definitely doesnt have the same properties or priorities as the dragon punch.
That’s the biggest reason I rarely use Sagat, even though he has a similar character design to Ryu and Ken. His Uppercut has less invincibility than the Shoryuken, 7 frames of complete invincibility for N.Sagat, 8 frames for Ryu’s Shoryuken, as per YBH. Even though the difference is only 1 frame, in practice it seems more like 2 or 3 IMO. And what’s even weirder is Ken has 6 frames of complete invincibility, but his Shoryuken is no different from Ryu’s in practice. :looney:
I definitely have to do the Uppercut later than the Shoryuken if I don’t want to trade with normal jump attacks. And if you watch high level Sagats like John Choi or Alex Valle, they have absolutely no problem not trading. But when I try it, I either trade or do it so late that the character lands and is able to block. It’s a rare moment when I land it, and considering I love doing the Shoryuken late enough not to trade, it seems weird to me that I can’t do the same thing with the Uppercut. The Uppercut will even trade sometimes with grounded meaties that the Shoryuken can stuff.
I think it has to do more with the vulnerable hitbox for Sagat once his invincibility runs out. He has full body vulnerability, but Ryu and Ken are only vulnerable on their head area (before they’re airborne).
Nope…I agree…except when they’re dizzy or wide open.
Bumping for great justice. I’ve been replaying that fight in my head way too many times, haha. :lovin:
I feel like I should use cr. forward, Tiger Knee more. Against standing opponents it should connect start a juggle. Against crouching opponent I can wiff into throw/Tiger Uppercut mix up. Do you guys use this often?
