Sagat Social/General Discussion Thread

Yahoo!!

Hey guys, long time no post, and I’m back. I feel I’ve become a lot better since I last posted here. I’m surely still a novice, but a more advanced novice these days, I think. Still maining Sagat, the king of Muay Thai!

I watched this Street Fighter’s beginner tutorial on Youtube

Now he says here, that as a beginner, I need to pick Ryu, because everyone who plays Street Fighter knows how to play Ryu. He basically says something like that.

Well hey! Sagat has plenty of great normals to help teach me the fundamentals of the game too. So fellow Sagat players, how would YOU go about presenting Sagat’s moves in a way that shows off the fundamentals/footsies to a novice?

Sagat is top 3 hardest characters to master. I would not advice you to start off playing Sagat. Now the reason I say that is due to Sagats limited mobility and footsie tools he has a very unique style of controlling space. Solid fundamentals are actually a requirement to properly play Sagat.

Not so sure about plenty. He has a few great ones, some okay ones, and a lot of chaff.

Uh… well, I suppose I could play as Ryu and Ken on some days then, and play as Sagat on others…

I mean, I want to get better but, I also want to enjoy playing as my originally aspired main.

It’ll take you a year to even get competent with Sagat. Minimum, unless you are a gaming god.

I’m personally at the stage where my execution and footsie’s allows me to pretty much pick up and play any footsie/fundamental based character at a good level - Like - Ryu, Ken, Gouken, Cammy, Guile, Fei etc etc. I’m also an old school SF2 player so my spacing and footsie’s is kind of pre-loaded from years of gaming.

Sagat is by far the hardest character I’ve ever picked up aside from maybe Yang (as in AE2012 Yang). His walk speed being one of the main problems. Your essentially trying to keep out Ferrari’s when you are driving a Tank.

The reason he is hard is because of two main problems.

  1. Very rarely two characters can be zoned in the same way , each offers a different range or technique - you NEED to know match ups inside out. One button may work like a charm in one match and be completely useless in another. He doesn’t have a go to cr.mk like Ryu. The same goes for Anti Airs, TU isn’t always the best option.

  2. Within those match ups your zoning strategy can actually change mid- match due to the Ultra system and powerful EX moves, you need to then play Sagat in an entirely different way.

At the same time Sagat is one of the most rewarding characters to win with since zoning is an art. Beating a rush down Akuma or Cammy player feels damn good.

yep, i agree with HLFB, we got no instant win buttons, and like 2 gimmicks for 150 damage a piece. you wanna win? you gotta outplay.

Getting good with Sagat is different from getting good with other characters. To be a good Sagat player, you basically need to be a good street fighter player since he doesn’t have gimmicky shit you can get damage with, you either score hits in footsies with your normals, frame trap them, anti air them, or hit them with a fireball. You can’t just learn a few setups and live off them with 0 fundamentals and still be somewhat successful as a player like with a bunch of other characters.

I think the concept of “Safe” and “Unsafe” needs to be revisited by the capcom staff.

Yo thanks for the reply! This one particularly gave me some basic info without getting too complex since I’m new to fighting games.

@Highlandfireball. I’ve been playing Sagat for almost a year now… once early February hits than it will be a year. Thanks for your advice as well. I’ve got a basic idea that knowing matchups are important: I’ve gotta get a feel for how I navigate Sagat around the other fighters.

Hmm… I’ve got some good ideas to practice on, now! Thanks again, all you people~

This is the reason why I can break 3500 PP with Abel but can barely break 2k PP with the King.

YOOOOOOO ultra sf4 edition select? If they run another tourney in that mode we are bodying everyone FREEEEEEEEEEE.

I never played vanilla sagat (or sf4 in general, super was my first), I can’t wait for safe knees and DAT DAMAGE!!!

yo this intro is this entire character thread summed up in the first 30 seconds

So what’s the deal with s.lk cancel? Is it in or out?
