Sagat Q&A: Ask simple questions here!

Gotcha, the cr. jab off the CH is just what i needed, as well as that post! Now I just gotta get smarter about when to go for the CH/frame trap, or just get so good with my shots/zoning i never have to use it!

Yo highland one last question, you need to be reasonably close for the cr lp to land correct? I feel like doing cr lk blockstring up to max distance and following up with a cr mp frame trap will be too far and cr lp will wiff, and therefore going for a frame trap off of cr lk, I shouldn’t do more than 1 or 2, correct?

Test it out it varies… Also its good to start trapping after setting up your grab game. Also knowing what type of teching they are going for and what setup to beat it/max damage. Knowing a certain characters cr lk frame data will also help you in deciding whcih trap you should go for because your trying to catch the crouch tech os.

I agree I dont understand how sagat is top 10. But we are all biased and are any of us really at the top level of our sagat game? But id favor more mixup characters than a zoner with above moderate damage.

We are biased but at the same time I play a range of characters including maining Fei Long. As you know with Sagat you can’t just sit back and flow chart it out, you have to be thinking all the time and I personally find it actually quite draining and also disheartning if you’ve worked hard all round just to get blown up with some 50/50 hit box bullshit. So from a playing perspective its tough in a pressure situation.

Sagat could well be top 10 ish if we are picking premium players but I still think he’s not really suited to tourney play without an alternate. As a counter pick though he’s the bomb, I think he’s one of the best go-to back up characters to have. If not THE best.

Top 10 means jack if the next 9 guys above you are bad matches… I mean even looking at that list, most of them are either bad, or slightly bad matches apart from Rufus. Just doesn’t make sense.

Agreed. I think not being to auto pilot is good though. But he definitely can be a huge salt generator if your not playing well. I also like that though because it can help you on your mental game. I say if you can keep sagat standing up he could be top 10. But once he gets knocked down by alot of the cast he goes down much much further.

Two questions.

Can anyone direct me to a guide on his safe tiger knee spaces

And can anyone also direct me to a kara guide to his fireballs because most of the time i try i get dps snd tns.

Thanks in advance

Spacing and character dependent. Also like high said it also depends if they stand or not. Alot of characters can just stand on 2 hit tk strings and make the knee unsafe.

^^ Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.

just wanted to share that it finally seems like i made a mental breakthrough recently, felt like i had a lot of tools in my toolbox but scrub instincts would take over. Finally throwing smarter/less predictable shots, and not giving free jump in combos away (lazy low ts at midrange was my biggest mistake), throwing shots actively anticipating jump ins, blocking on wakeup instead of going for reversals every time, being patient when pressured, and try and safely build space instead of mashing dp. being smart/varied with my pressure and mix ups instead of going for braindead hit confirms (i noticed a guy was reversaling my cross up attempts into hit confirm blockstring, so i threw out the cross over did nothing and baited an easy punish!!!). It feels good seeing how they are responding to my pressure, and coming up with a different option to throw at em. used to go to rushdown mode every time id get a knock down, now im picking my spot and realizing space is my friend, lets make em take 20% of their life just trying to get thru the tiger shot obstacle course.

Best of all, even if im down on life, ive stopped giving the game away as much. even if im 15% health, and he’s 60%, no need to try for psychic dp’s or a predictable jump in or random ultra. reality is, i land two good shots, and walk him into the corner, im one good mixup away from taking it.

I know pp’s arent an absolute gauge of how good you are, but it feels good from flirting at the 1500-1800 range to being solidly over 2000k pp. thanks for the help and encouragement, I still got a long way to go.

May the tiger be with you

Can someone tell me why all sagats, even top ones, use c.mk in punish situations, even when the opponent is point blank. For example, after a focus crump, I’ve seen bonchan do c.mk knee instead of c.mp knee, which does more damage

Personally - because it’s easier. Your fingers naturally strum between the two buttons. I’d imagine that’s the main reason.

It is for me anyway. You can cancel a cr.mk into TU from a longer range also as you mentioned.

Sagat is no way in hell top 10… Lol if sagat was top 10 im pretty sure we’d be seeing him appear in top8’s more then like once in a blue moon. Especially when theres a bunch of specialist sagats out their that have mained him for 4 years.

who here thought sagat was top ten afer a couple months after the latest update dropped? i mean…come ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon

I think we have all come to the realization that u play sagat cuz u like him not cuz hes a good or competitive.

top ten. lulworthy imo

I called it even before the patch if mofos remember! in the words of sanford when i was chillin with him at evo “Sagats Ass”

Yep, without brain dead combos and mixups or retardedly safe options (rekkas ftw), I’ve only started realizing how hard we have to work for our damage, I mean damn when I get cornered by ryu (who it seems like EVERYONE is playing now) with 1 bar and ultra they have like 12 options to take half my life off of one hit. That dude above ain’t lying when they say playing 'gat is exhausting.

Can I throw out a proposition though: are we just not good enough? If we really stepped it up to maximize on every opportunity, hit every AA and max damaged every combo, while stopping unsafe stuff, played super patient, and throwing smart shots, could sagat really hang in this cast?

Or should we just say eff it gets that 1 super bar and TK cannon strike?

Wait, you people are talking about cammy and i wasn’t invited?

Well… Sagat feels really awkward to play. The only other fireball character I play is Guile, and with him you don’t really need to worry about being jumped. But with Sagat… you can’t throw a fireball without judging if the opponent can jump it, or worse ultra you, and then I get caught up in trying to kara them and not realising that the opponent is in my face… Will the fireball game begin to become natural?
