I fight WAAAY more Balrogs than Sagats. I hardly ever run into any Sagats. The ones I do run into are usually push overs. I may lose once or twice to them, if I don’t respect their damage output or make too many mistakes, but as long as I’m not playing when I’m half asleep, I typically do pretty well against Sagat, considering I play a character with a 6-4 match up against him.
Who is complaining about the number of Sagats? Ryu is the character I can’t go a 30 minute online period without playing. He and Balrog have got to be the most used characters online… Though from about Feb 09-Sept09 or so, it was all about that fiery shoryuken!
Im not talking about Justin Wong whose livelihood depends on winning. Besides him and a select few others, its not that serious. Regardless of if youre a “pro” or a G1 scrub, true tier whorism is defined by a necessity to gain advantage from outside factors that dont include your own skill. The old adage is to use characters that best fit your playstyle and natural rhythm. A response of “well my natural rhythm is to use characters that are really good at everything” is just admitting that you dont believe your own skills are good enough to stand on their own. “Lets play 1 on 1 to 11, but I get to start off 3-0.”
I also dont think its as big of an advantage as you make it out to be, though. “If you really wanna win in high level play, of course you use Ryu or Sagat.” Does that mean all the top tourney players that dont use top tier arent trying to win? It also suggests serious balance issues to say that being a tier whore is justified, which most will agree isnt the case w/ SF4.
Fuck, that hilarious! You could make the same list with Ryu, just change #4 to “Hadouken” and #6 to “i will play Sagat!”
…Now that I think about, same applies to Zangief. #4 is “Lariet” and #6 is “i will play Ryu or Sagat!”

The same base sure. But even the shotos themselves have different gameplans.
Different gameplans, but Ryu/Ken/Akuma/Sagat are still what you’d call Shotos.

And as far as Sagat goes, yeah you can do that. Too bad that alone doesn’t win tournaments. This SF4 Sagat is by far the most fun and interesting incarnation of Sagat to date. He has alot of tools and just limiting yourself to his zoning is just going to handicap you.
