Sagat beginner question

lol at the Gen Viper guy!!
Anyway he might have some truth in his statement there(although i doubt he recognizes it).
My point is learn the character whos playstyle you like most.Period.
If u learn a ‘‘easy’’ character u dont really enjoy playing u’ll have a more difficult time opposed to learning a ‘‘difficult’’ character (gen & viper come to mind) who really rocks your shit.
That being said when i started at vanilla, after a couple days it was clear that it was gonna be the Thai Emperor with the eyepatch. It never came to my mind triing someone who is easier, cause i just enjoyed his playstyle.
I later found out the meaning of tier lists and which position my character represents there and of course had a reason to laugh.
So yea, my advice to anyone is def.: play who you feel like and not who is easy hard or watever ever!
When i was a shorty, SF2, it was guile all the way. Unfortunatly the next fighter i played after that was sf4 meaning i missed out alot.(germany is not known for having arcades and def. not in my hometown).
When i picked up sf4, of course i first tried Guile and I just dont like him at all in the 4 series.
(the fact that he yells Flash kick when he sommersaults now, is so retarded imo and one of the reasons i dont play him).

You can basically teach yourself.
1.Here are some basics http://iplaywinner.com/sagat-ssf4
2.The next step is search the Sagat forum thoroughly. There’s a ton of good info in here that is gonna help you.
3.Watch youtube videos of Top sagat players to see what they do / how they play the character.
i.e. : Mago ,Alioune , Bonchan , Sanford Kelly

Well this thread’s almost a year old but I still feel like posting that I don’t think Sagat is a very good beginner character. Sure at a low or mid level you can scrub out a lot of wins with reversal dps and whatnot but when you start getting into the smart stuff I feel like Sagat is arguably one of the harder characters to reach a high level with in the game. I can play a handful of characters well and I really want to add Sagat to my bag of tricks but there is something about Sagat that is keeping me from being comfortable with him and in turn is making my win ratio with him under .500. I have pretty good execution with him (the only link I’m not too good at hitting is f.lk to cr.j) but whenever I play someone who knows what they’re doing I get beat clean a lot. I know I need to do some homework in order to become proficient with the dude but I feel that I should have some level of comfort with him after the 150 or so matches I’ve played with him.

Part of this situation probably comes from Sagat status in Vanilla. All SF4 players who began at Vanilla, at all level of play, have some knowledge about the Sagat matchup.

Never mind. Don’t feel like trying to learn another character. I wasted enough hours trying to main other characters just to still suck. Thx anyway.

Let’s say this, sagat is a master of tools. He has a large arsenal at his disposal and to be “proficient” with him you have to master each and everyone of his guns. Hardly is he an easy character to go high level with.

Take dhalsim for example, u can probably scrub out a few wins spamming out hp and shit but you will get bodied if your zoning game is not top notch, have you ever seen a “decent” dhalsim? Because i can only find dhalsim players to be under : shit , good and very good

Personally , I don’t think there’s any character that’s easy to go high level with. You get out what you put in.

You forgot about fei long. that negro is cheap as shit.

Funny you mention it. I’ve mained Fei Long for 3 years and my win percentage is about the same with Sagat ( 6 months)

As a Sagat player your probably on the receiving end as it can be an easy match for Fei at times. In my experience though, people are not educated enough in the match up, they are quite happy to sit and soak up unsafe pressure in fear of eating rekka’s, they just don’t realise it.

I acknolwedge my frustrations as a sagat player. However, picking up fei for a few matches i shared Combojack’s sentiment about fei

“HOW DO PPL LOSE WITH THIS CHARACTER?”

that being said i think fei is much easier to play. just my opinion, but when i play other “good” players and i switch to fei (and i’m a fei noob to be sure) i still manage to do A LOT knowing relatively little about him.

his character design itself makes a player good IMO. If you don’t have good footsies fei long will give them to you by his moves alone. Need a way out? here have 3 choices: great back dash: ex chicken wing OUT of corner, flame kick fadc (TO 0 ON ADVANTAGE). need great normals? HERES ALL OF THEM. 3 frame shorts and jabs. need a easy OS for back dashers that has no risks? here.

i could write an essay but you get my sentiment

Thing with Fei is, most people who are naturally good at SF have good footsie’s, and that alone can win you matches against the majority of LIVE warriors. Fei obviously excels in this area so he can seem easy to play. Plus he has retarded damage.

His rekka game is where the big bucks are though, and 90% of the time players just are not using them correctly (if at all), he’s a little like Sagat in that respect, unless you can use Tiger shots, you’ll never get good. Also you have to take into consideration Fei has got progressively stronger in each version, which means if your playing a Fei Long mainer, they are going to know their shit very very well. They have had no reason to drop him.

Both are fun characters, but I actually enjoy playing Sagat more than Fei Long believe it or not! They compliment each other quite well as a pair in the game.

alting fei would really round all your bad match ups thats for sure!
