iim dissapointed at the arcade scene in sacramento. I live in elk grove and go to ucdavis and i’m dissapointed if there is only 1 guy on. If it’s a guy i havent seen before i roll up my sleeves and try to own him. whether or not i’m successful isnt the pt. what the pt. is, is, davis is a cool arcade scene cuz its not florin? and it surely isnt stockton (god bless those who have been taken by that robber)
mikey, larry, and randy are the only serious players left from this area… they were the youngest of the old birdcage/folsom crowd and now are the only people left to represent Sac in tournaments (and are doing quite well I might add). But they just play at eachother’s houses. I think there’s a benefit in playing people who aren’t your friends…
The sac scene dropped dramatically when birdcage closed two years ago. Naturally people are lost when a landmark like that is shut down. It dropped yet again once APEX was formed. IMO, tournaments lost a significant amount of value once they became mainstream, as a matter of fact, they became pretty boring and redundant. The focus was no longer on holding a gathering of great players, but about accumulating points. More of a contest than a competition I suppose. At least thats how it was here in Sac.
Since Sac wasn’t exactly a super-powerhouse in any recent game like SVGL or the late SHGL (although we did grow to have best norcal mvc2 by 2002), people no longer desired to travel to compete at the ‘legendary’ folsom Gameroom because they could just round up friends and play at a local arcade anywhere in norcal. That makes sense for anyone from SVGL. I dunno about the rest of norcal, i dunno what their excuse was… Of course, the personality clashes, destructive egos, and rampant manic depression-isms between we sac players was an issue too. Huge inflated heads between then-average players. too fun…
Since Folsom gameroom closed about 8 months ago, most of the older players started to focus on other things, leaving no one to preserve and set the standard for any future type of playing…
if you were to find a crowd nowadays, more than likely none of them would know how to play the game even half-way decently (if that is at all important to you). If you really want comp, better off to go to SVGL which is 2 hrs away. People still frequent that arcade.
If you simply want people to play, CSUS is usually packed … maybe ARC too?
People in and out of sacramento often ask about sac comp… well, here’s the answer and reasons for its extinction from my eyes… sorry for the long post, but its early… and i had nothing else to do.
Damn ricky. Breaking it down. I still play, but cant travel as much as larry, randy, or mikey. Leoncio, I live in south sac, and just bought a home in elk grove (moving in nov/dec), but if you want to play just holla so we can set something up.

I am hella bummed I’m not there If you can’t get the cost of the room taken down to 1 person, I’ll pitch in my fair share since leaving u stranded is totally lame.

Ricky is the man. He always lys down the law. I miss the old days of Folsom. Just how we all used to go to the GR and play games FOR FUN! I hate APEX and everything that it caused. I think that, like Ricky said, we all just found other things. I have Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu now, but I still play randomly at Scandia now, and once in a while at Nick’s. As far as competitive gaming goes, however, there is really no scene in Sacramento.

Evo2003 was the best tournment I’ve ever been yet. So many hightlights and upsets. There are a lot of close matches, too. Especially Daigo VS K.O in 3S and Dr.B VS Daigo in CvS2.
