In my opinion it’s a thing that older FGC members enjoy V a lot more then 4. I’ve been arround since the 3rd Strike days, which was my main game for 4~5 years from 2005 till 2010. I just didn’t like SF4 but eventually ended up playing it because i like the competition, and once everyone plays a game it’s you best option to play it too if you truly want to enjoy your local szene and also support it. I became decent in the game but never had the drive/the edge to go all in. while initially most of the “old-timers” didn’t want to play 4 for these reasons most of us ended up doing so. now with 5 we see a complete different story. the guys who came in with 4, most of them hate the game and don’t want to play it, while most of the 3rd strikers enjoyed it since day 1. it’s something you see in other country szenes too. KX and Gunfight never really played 4 (well known 3rd Strike players in europe) but you can see them from time to time play V.
lol Eh, guess I’m by myself on that one. Granted, I really, REALLY, want Poison in for SF5. That would settle my love for both USF4 and SF5.
Yup, nozarex pretty much nailed my feelings on the game. I’m a 3rd strike player. Admittedly a bad one, but it is definitely my favorite Street Fighter of them all. I saw 4 in a way as step backwards for Street Fighter in lot of aspects from character design to gameplay. The removal of the parry system hurt the game a lot for me as I saw FA as stripped down version of it. Something about 5 reminds me a lot about 3. Maybe its the punishing learning curve, high damage possibilities or whatever. I’m not sure. I tried every version of 4 and it could never stick.
5 did.
Anyways… some news from the Capcom front, Capcom Fighting Network is getting some major overhauls:

Tiers4Fears: These changes if they work right will may get you some more Laura time. All the changes address some of yer issues.
(edited due to content, keepen’ it laura centric)
redundant
@thisRalf Remember that there’s a general SFV thread to talk about the game. This section is mainly to talk about Laura (and not just between Laura mains).
Not sure what the point of the cr. LK nerf was, but I’ll take that over whatever else they could have done.
I have been complaining about this from day one. It happens so much

Not sure what the point of the cr. LK nerf was, but I’ll take that over whatever else they could have done.
A lot of her pressure comes from ST LK -> CR LK -> CR LP -> LP Bolty line, or some sort derivative of that. On block, you’re at advantage the entire time.
I like to cross-up with lk and either tick throw, go directly into sunset wheel, or follow up immediately CR LK -> CR LP. Forces my opponent to guess what I am going to do next.
Making LK +0 instead of +1 on block reduces the amount of pressure from her. If your opponent has a 3 framer, you can hit her after or trade stopping her pressure on block. Not the most significant nerf, but it does alleviate some pressure if the player knows the matchup well enough.
Cr lk, cr lp is a chain (and a true blockstring)
I’ll certainly be labbing it when the beta comes out next week.
The chances of people replying with 3 framers if Laura uses cr. LK are very low because - as @Los discovered during S1 - the normal has a very short hitstop and everything coming after that is absolutely unreactable. Basically they’ll have to commit to a 3 framer to beat anything coming after that, but even in that case they won’t be able to break the true blockstring that is the cr. LK > cr. LP chain. In short this is a totally insignificant nerf and I wonder why they even bothered doing that.
edit: there’s maybe only one significant change - if you do cr. LK > command grab and they try to tech they may now be able to throw you because who wins between command grabs and regular throws is decided randomly.
I know I said this is mainly for Laura talk, but I wanted to remind you that if you’re on PC or have a powerful enough gaming PC from Tuesday on you will be able to try out the new Laura changes for free during the open beta.
Since we’ve had a few months with season 2 Laura, I was wondering if any of you guys’ matchup thoughts have changed?
Example: I used to think Urien was really tough, but now I seem to have a handle on it. Could just be that I face him so damn often. Not that I win all the time, but I understand his game plan which helps tremendously. And why do they use his invincible reversal so damn often? They’re worse than season one Ken players. CRUSH~goodnight.
My personal worst matchups are:
Gief- duh
Guile- only way I can win is Yolo overheads and hope they are flash kick abusers
Cammy- I can win but her pressure is insane
Akuma- For whatever reason I lose a LOT to Akuma. He just has so many damn options and his tick throw game is legit. Claps are risky to do because of his red fireball. His jump in options are so numerous and you have to be lightning fast with H bolt to catch demon flip or trade with air fireball.)
Juri- I haven’t been able to get a handle on her frame traps and low confirms. Her St MK is hell.
*I should note that I’ve had some trouble with fang but I don’t think it’s the matchup, it’s just me being impatient and the fact that I so rarely play any.
My best matchups are easily Nash, Bison, Kolin (so far) and Vega. Poor Nash really doesn’t stand a chance. I actually feel bad playing them.
Any tips? Share your own thoughts?

Resident silver scrub (got to 3900 last night, only to fall to 3200, and claw my way back to shy of 3700). Been playing a bit more lately, and I’m beginning to get a wee bit better. My worst:
Urien: number one with a bullet. I play 4 last night and went 2 and 8, 3 of those I was swept. His buttons are so fast, he everything he does his so safe and his throw is ridiculous, not to mention his EX headbutt. Towards the end I understood the gameplan a bit. I found at my level after an EX headbutt, you can follow up with a standing hard punch and get the CC every due to peeps jamming buttons all the time with him (because f it: everything is safe on him). Your milage may vary.
Zangief: FU crouch jab. FU 0 frame super. Spinning Clothesline is AA’ing my jump ins and cross ups. Everything he does besides the standing roundhouse is slow enough to see coming and punish.
Karin: Mental block. I know her game. I know what she does. I just freeze and go into autopilot. I’ve been better lately, but still.
Ryu: see above, including trauma from S1.
Akuma: working on my meaties and throw stopping tech, this matchup got better. Still every akuma gets a life lead and proceeds to throw fireballs and use their options on me when I approach. All of them. Its like auto-pilot. Even when they are losing they do that. Last night I got sick of it during one match. So I got a huge life lead at 70 seconds left went to the opposite side of the screen, and jumped fireballs till the clock ticked down to 25. He then rushed me when her finally figured he had to beat me and not the other way around. I may do that more.
M Bison: getting better, but I’m still a bit button happy which leads to my demise.
Necalli: Easier than last season, but still a pain.
Even (based on recollection): Birdie, Ken, Chun-li (S2), Alex, Ibuki (so far, the armies are coming tho), Nash, Rashid, Vega, Balrog, and Juri (the standing MK tho…)
Easy:
Guile: dunno what it is. He should destroy me. But I consistently beat him. Even players with a higher rank than I. I’m pretty handy with EX Bolty line against Fireballs and getting good with EX Sunset Wheel, which REALLY helps this matchup.
FANG: Because FANG. S2.1 tho…
R Mika: She is still strong, but the nerfs hurt the scrub game at my level.
Not enough matches: Dhalsim and Kolin.
^Interesting that we differ so much!
The good things about urien is that his projectile is slow enough that you can challenge with your own, just don’t get predictable. Mostly with him I just block and wait for the random ex reversal may eat a few throws here and there but I’m cool with that. If you’re able to do a close cross up jump he really has no answer for that. Jumping in general is not so scary in this match.
I’m glad you’re having good luck with guile. I might need to rethink my approach. Probably just too impatient.
^Yeah. I’m getting my miles in. I was so pissed off by the 6th loss to a Urien player I flipped my joystick in saltyness. I literally thought to myself I can’t WAIT for the nerfs so he can be knocked down a peg. But I’m beginning to get his game a bit.
The thing I find with Guile, there is a point where they get extremely fireball happy. Its Sonic boom. Sonic Boom. EX Sonic boom. V-Skill Fake out. EX Sonic Boom. Sonic Boom. V-Skill Boom. I find that trying to navigate this hell is pointless. His fastest boom comes out almost too fast to jump. And he is waiting for the EX bolty line, or the jump in for a free flash kick. During this nonsense you are usually too far for an EX Sunset Wheel.
I try to ride it out till they flinch. You’ll know it when you see it… they pause for a moment and wonder WTF. Its that point you can approach because they may not have charge for a boom and they will go immediately on the defensive. And that is not where you want to be against a Laura. His normals beat Laura’s for the most part I find, so make sure you are sure about your pokes. If you make them scared of the EX Sunset Wheel, you crippled their fireball game in the neutral. The match gets easier from there.
Also cross up LK is surprisingly effective against stopping flash kicks. The hit box stops it occasionally. Milage may vary of course. I just approach every Guile with a ton of respect. Even the worst Guile player can make the match hell for Laura.

None have really changed to me honestly.
Shotos can still be a hassle. Id rather deal with Ryu than Ken though. Ken in the corner is still ridiculous, but at least we can apply pressure now and force them to use meter. His run and VTrigger cancels are just YOLO as hell and you dont know what to press or do.
**
Nash**…oh God even I feel bad for the poor guy. Laura just trashes the dude from beginning to end. Birdie is the same.
Akuma, yeah…Im getting thrashed by him. His buttons just seem so much better than yours and that flip is hard as hell to catch. SOmetimes it just seems impossible to take your turn back even with his -2 moves and trying to jab or st.mk. I love how Akuma players complain about having short buttons and not being able to do too much…looks at Laura REALLY!?!?!
**
Zangief**, this makes no sense. If it’s a competent Gief you are totally screwed. All it is is headbutt, st.hk, and grab, nothing else. I had to shut the game off a few days ago because I got pissed that fucker EX grabbed me through my overhead when my leg was about to reach. Not only that but now their giving him more moves??? WHY?
Guile can be infuriating. But EX Grab and a bad flash kick can save the day and swing it heavily in your favor.
**
Cammy** is ridiculous with her pressure, but at least with her low health you can cause massive damage.
Necalli and Juri are just annoying. The fact that you cant be rewarded for crossing them up for move or throw whiffing or being out-of-place because of their broken jab makes the matchup pretty stupid sometimes. Other than that its moreso just whose safer on the endless amount of BS.
Karin I find quite easy. Even Diamond rank ones. Now, thats not to say the matchup is a cake walk. You have to scare the hell out of them to get anything done. VReversal is your best friend in this matchup, especially with them popping VTrigger and trying to rekka. Her jab can smack Laura out of her crossups too (are Lauras jumping attacks just outright bad or are peoples AAs too good against her?)
Kolin…eh? I mean, to me the matchup is moreso a win for Laura. Mixup heaven is the game, mixing between low and mid scares them for trying to counter. Grabbing and delayed wakeup is your friend!
Urien, can go %#$@ himself. Those nerfs cant come soon enough.
I do agree about the shotos. Maybe Ryu is screwed in other matchups but he still has all the tools to keep Laura out if the player is paying attention. I guess when I lose to Ryu or Ken now I actually feel like I got outplayed, not that my turn (which I worked my ass off for) got ruined by bullshit uppercuts.
I’m playing the beta and despite the change to LP bolt (active frames decreased from 4 to 3) you can still autopilot it after sunset wheel in trigger? It doesn’t completely wiff but instead hits. So the nerf is rather negligible. Yes, you are not +1 now but this makes things still a lot easier.
EDIT: Have to test it again at some point, might be possible i just missed the timing.
I’m relieved it works. It’s weird though mathematically speaking, I wonder if there aren’t any other hidden changes to her?
@DrGulag I just tested the LP Bolt after EX command grab on the beta and it whiffs if you do it as fast as possible. You must’ve done it a frame or two too late.
