Ryu

Hey everyone,

it’s been a long time since i posted anything amounting to much.

I used to always draw Ryu, in fact every male character i used to draw would be Ryu in some form, but of late, apart from not drawing much, i don’t tend to draw many Ryus or SF fanart much, sigh a sad sign of age. So it was a surprised when this popped out. Thought i’d share. Once it came out, i wanted to make it the best i could, so its quite refined for someone like me. I’m regretting the use of blur and the half-tone though.

The way Kandoken draws Ryu was a big influence - gotta love his Ryu faces and the way he renders muscles, its so effoertless for him. So in a way, this was a test for me. Hope the extra effort shows.

Enjoy.

That’s really good. His foot looks just a little strange, I guess you could shade it a little differently so you can differentiate the bottom of the foot form the ankle region better.

He looks like he took a mighty hulk type leap.

chu back?

yea the left hand and foot look alittle odd, other than that great job.

Hmmm. I don’t mind the foot if the hands were equally caricaturized. One thing about Capcom style is the men have huuuuge hands/feet. Really diggin the style. I think you could definitely use the half-tones better, keep at it.

Thanks everyone for their comments.

The amount of work on the colouring is amazing!

Apart from small issues with the foot and stuff pretty mindblowing stuff!

Looks like someone’s improved a lot.:bgrin: Think that’s the most polished colour job you’ve shown yet. Really liking the face and torso. Can’t really think of anything to critique. Maybe some shadows to give more sense of depth, showing which part is behind and which is more forward. Hey while you’re at it, do some MB pics too.:bgrin:

Ohyeah… I too am jealous of kandoken’s skills.

jz, you did a really nice job on the painting…I like that part quite a bit.

So, I’m going to make some comments that’ll hopefully help your drawings. So, don’t take it in the wrong way because you’ve done a pretty good job already on Ryu.

There all a lot of small problems with the anatomy and musculature. Not just on the foot or his right arm/hand like people have mentioned. The left arm also has a lot of problems in terms of the muscles contracting and relaxing and there are a few key areas where the muscles are incorrectly drawn. The one that sticks out is his left deltoid, where it connects to his chest. The way you drew and painted it makes it look really round and that just doesn’t happen in those muscles.

Another thing to remember is your arm musculature. You have the bicep flexed right now, which is absolutely correct because his arm is bent. But…when the bicep is flexed, then the tricep relaxes. You have the tricep flexed really hard and you have some strange bulging muscle there. The muscle that you’ve probably drawn there is the biceps brachialis, which is correct, but it doesn’t have a little bump like that and it’s not that small. It runs in between the biceps and triceps and goes down into the forearm. There are a few issues with the forearm musculature as well.

Ryu’s right eye is a little low as well. If you check the angle of the tops of his ears and compare that angle with the eyes, they’re completely different. Really subtle thing, but it’s there.

His right arm…it looks like it’s dislocated because of how far out the deltoid is from his shoulder and chest area.

The best thing to do sometimes is to look in the mirror if you can’t have somebody pose for you as reference. I have a full-length mirror and I’ll look at expressions, or some poses once in a while to make sure they’re correct. Animators do this all the time when they’re animating characters.

I know that was long and I hope it helps! It’ll only make your art better and keep up the good work!

Another big thanks for the comments guys!

weslouie: Thank you so much much for spending the time to critique my work. It’s really valuable, thank you. I’ll try my best to learn what i can so it can be incorporated into my work, though you gave me some particularly useful starting points. I’m glad you like the pic, it means alot coming from someone inside the industry like you.

No problem at all, I hope what I said makes sense and helps a bit
