Ryu Video Thread

I been trying to apply what you said about thinking about my situation during the match, “am i in front”, “can I frustrate him”, etc. Is this what is referred to when ppl talk about having a “game plan”?

I think that’s the hardest thing to be able to do while playing a match: being able to discreetely analyze what is happening on-screen and being able to not only continue playing (the physical, mechanical part), but also simultaenously continue formulating “moves” and “counter-moves” in an intellectual capacity.

I honestly have never put thought into formulating any type of “game plan” but those “questions” you typed above seem like good touchstones to hark to during my “training”. Thanks man.

awesome ! that u went and watched Trigger. I actually will have to disagree on your point about how it’s impossible DMG:

i’m not in the least a great ryu player, heh, and after 30 mis practising the meaty overhead setup after a CC sweep… dude, ANYONE can do it.

  • CC sweep on opponent
  • 1x FWD dash
  • crouching short
  • standing LK
  • OVERHEAD

BOOM! SUPER EASY dude. it will hit the enemy meaty meaty if they wakeup/reversal w/ a 4frame normal, and it will trade on the last hit (2nd hit) versus 3frame buttons, such as a Necalli waking up with st jab.
this means since it trades on the last hit of the OH the trade will NOT push Ryu back, almost NO push back (i.e. this also includes almost zero reeling animation), which means…

  • regardless of the OH trading/hitting clean on the opponent, Ryu can then do… p. much whatever he wants (that makes sense), such as DP’ing, popping Trigger, etc. However Axe Kick is a no-no as its startup is too long.
So while you are right in general context here, I do however vehemently disagree that doing Ryu’s sweep/meaty/overhead/trade-into-SRK is “impossible”.

What I do find “impossible” are his amazing whiff punishes using sweep and the way the TriggerSFV “Ryu-bot” generally moves around the screen. If you pay attention he moves only when necessary and during neutral he NEVER initiates the offense and instead makes sure to exploit holes in the opponents sequences.

Impossible stuff is like when Trigger will wake up with cr. HP xx SRK xx ETC and hit the opponent, i think in one match it was versus a Chun-Li doing one of her hopping kick moves on Trigger’s wakeup, and also he does the cr HP wakeup on an Urien who does an Urien-overhead kick on his wakeup (which is NOT a true meaty).

Stuff like that, and how he whiff punishes enemy moves with ryu’s sweep that you would never think able to do so; that’s the “impossible” part. It means one will need to legitimately “download” the opponent when using Ryu so you KNOW, for example, that the Urien opponent WILL 100% do a non-true overhead kick on your wakeup and the max punish on that is… cr. HP xx ETC.

most of us would just block! it doesn’t really occur to many of us that instead of blocking Ryu can do that instead. Anyway that’s just one example. I’m uploading a match I had with the same guy from my last video and this match was 1000x better. Would really appreciate any input/criticism, so i can make a little list/notes of it and try my best to “work on it”.

this is… PROBABLY upt here in my top 5 best matches i’ve ever done (i lost but it was neck and neck). I would really appreciate any input, any tips, etc. Don’t worry for now this’ll be my last video post, as hopefully I can get some feedback from this one and spend time working on what’s typed:

@aweigh You actually didn’t much improve anything from the advices Highland gave you. I guess that is why nobody is responding.
You need to train fundamentals.
Learn your normals ranges. You whiff to much, most of it doesn’t look like fishing for getting in or whiff punish (which are only solid reasons to whiff).
Learn punishes. See tatsu - stand up, punish. See DP - crush counter punish. Got fireball too close - punish.
Learn frames. There are instances where you don’t challenge him after minus buttons and he is mashing. You need to take as much attack chances from the opponent as possible.
Learn oki. And with Ryu especially. You need to get in as many times as you can. You will not have many chances to do so.
Antiair.
Learn confirms and counterhit confirms. For Ryu they are not hard just need practise and awareness. When you press a button you need to know what you will do if it hits and what if it is blocked. Don’t expect to react without prediction - it doesn’t work that way. Confirm or counterhit confirm into combo if you are in range. Otherwise dash, jump, stagger to use plus frames.

You need to have a gameplan against a character. That means you know where you have to block. Where you can interrupt and what counterhit confirm to use. Where and why it’s better to use what wakeup. What you should expect in neutral, spacing. What is that character strong options and default gameplan. For example Ryu will fireball, dash, jump, DP on wakeup, finish most of his combos with fireball and use sweep too much. Jump fireball, interrupt dash, antiair jump, bait and punish DP and sweep, don’t get cocky in oki, block low - Ryu overhead is shit. Gameplan should always be adjusted and there are always a lot of litter things, but untill you get gold you don’t need to worry about much more.

And finally you need to adjust to a player. There are 3 types of players: mad, solid and turtly. You opponent here for example plays as a rabid monkey so he is obviously a mad type. You also play as a mad type. But agains a mad player it’s better to play good defence, solid or even turtly. You can give Ryu a lot of freedom to do shit - he can’t do much to open you up. And against such level of stupidity you can just sit and block, react and punish - he will die first. If for some reasons he will get worried by getting punished all the time - he will slow down (usually not) and you can think of pressuring him.
Don’t get me wrong mad style will get you a lot of wins. Because most players get swept away by high tempo. As is obvious by your opponent who is a super platinum and plays like shit but intensly and fast. It works in low leagues because nobody know punishes. It works in high leagues because you don’t expect such level of fuckery. But higher you get the less it works unless you solidify it to a good rushdown. Being able to play in different styles is more effective. Turtle mad ones, solid on solids, walk turtles to the corner. Have outbursts of mad but only outbursts. Adding good fundamentals to that is even more effective. Focus on that.

How to train fundamentals you can learn in Gief’s Gym. This book. Also try to search for that in reddit it should be there somewhere for free.

that is the ebst post i ever read in my life. i have taken this shit to HEART

Wrong thread.

wow, it is truly impressive how good Jyobin is. Sure, OtaniRyu might be the highest online Ryu right now but the most entertaining one to watch is Jyobin for sure.

i think the reason he shines like this (in above video) in SF5 is because Ryu is soooo limited and lacks any tools to enforce anything so Jyobin has decided to resort to an unbelievably “risky” strategy of simply opting for the on-paper “best punish” in a lot of footsie situations where when he has the opponent’s rhythm in check he will go for an SRK instead of playing actual footsies (i.e. trying to whiff punish, counter hit, etc).

there was certainly a lot of this in SF4 (ume-shoryu after all) but that was when SRKs carried little to no risk and had more invincibility frames; it is more impressive watching Jyobin’s Ryu constantly use SRKs or “risky” punishes in situations where normally a Ryu would/should go for something safe.

above posted video is probably one of the rare few examples of SF5 ryu footage being legit entertaining to watch because of this, because of the massive risks he is taking constantly instead of sticking with what he should do.

obviously another big part of the reason he can even pull of playing like that is because of the general lack of options for both attaker and defender in SF5, as well.

edit: last time i saw gutsy Ryu play like that was from the chinese Ryu player Abao when he would block and then immediately SRK (in tournament set) Sako’s Akuma’s fwd. + HP. makes perfect sense since all akumas go for a light normal after you block Akuma’s fwd. + HP but I never before had even considered doing something like that since it had begun to be drilled into my head that in SF5 ryu should always try to block everything and never stick his neck out.

this later became a successful mind-game for Abao since after Sako saw him doing that he began blocking after doing Akuma’s fwd. + HP and then Abao grabbed him; and then afterwards Sako stopped using the move altogether.

he completely shut down one of his opponent’s tools in their game plan by doing that. was very impressive.

@“HNIC Mike”
@TWINBLADES

Hey mike here’s the neutral jumps I was talking about in the Rashid match, I do it probably a bit more than I usually would, but it does work. Twinblades this Cammy is really good ( even though I win) notice how I’m kinda scared to do anything because of where she stands. I’m only really trying to pick her off or uses dashes.

I put some other matches on here just to fill up the video. I had more entertaining ones but like the spacing battles better.

You need to lower you graphics settings. Your frame rate looks like its somewhere between 30-40. This is evidenced by how Janky your and opponents play are.
For street fighter you need a steady fps at 60 instead of graphical beauty. It will help with your timing and network lag.
I personally wouldnt bother learning other stuff until you get that straightened out as it hinders your progression. .

Hi, guys.

Just want to let you know that, if you are still playing with Ryu, you have my admiration and love. Win or lose, you’re a champion to all fellow-Ryu players. Keep fighting the good fight.

So, the other day I returned to this game and play some matches. Wasn’t as bad as I thought, all things considering, but I ran into a nasty Gief and I would love to ask for your advice about what options I did have.

The whole match went a bit like this:

  • He crouched and spammed LP.
  • I tried to whiff punish with some normals, mostly sweep.
  • He caught me off-guard in the middle of a normal and jumped in. Either comboed me or Pile Drived me.
  • And, of course, if I tried to jump in, he stopped me with lariat or jab.
  • Tried to zone him, but, well, you know that is not a thing in this game unless you use Guile.

I don’t know if the replay is still in CFN, but if I find it, I’ll upload it. Anyways, tips?

Thanks.

Never going to sweep a jab unless it’s a guess. Better off using something like st.mk or st.hk.

Solar plexus in the Gief match is quite good against the more aggressive giefs.

Basically only use fireballs really sparingly, it’s not a fireball zoning match as opposed to a more footsie based zoning match.

If you knock him down always go for the dash up meaty/throw since he has no wake up.

For jump ins you can sometimes get away with J.hp if you time it properly.

Always back roll everything against Gief especially the lariat if it hits you.

I think it’s about evenish.

I don’t know if i’d say it’s even. I’d say it’s 5.5 giefs advantage. If you get knocked down by hP SPD, or Ex spd, the game is an endless vortex that never ends. His crouch jabs are obnoxious. Most really good giefs will just crouch walk and jab you to death. If you try to jump - lariat. If he gets in mid range, you have to worry about lariat because ryus hurtbox after a thrown hadoken is Absurd.

So you’re stuck wishing gief will whiff a Fierce or a hop kick. Once you knock him down it’s not too bad, but when they have super it makes things even more difficult. I’m not saying this matchup is a landslide, but i’m not seeing this as being 5-5

I’m actually considering on picking Ryu back up. I currently main Kolin and Ed is my pocket character. I haven’t played as Ryu seriously since Kolin came out.

Everything you mentioned isn’t specific to the Ryu match though. It’s just Gief.

This is exactly what happened to me that time. I was jabbed to death.

You know, as much as he has been nerfed, I think Ryu is still the basis of what this game should be. His V-Trigger could last a little longer, but other than that, *I do like *that you still have to earn your comeback after activation. The way most of the cast work with their V-Triggers as a form of X-Factor or Custom Combo robs the system of its potential fun.

Most grapplers have an annoying jab that beats fb and much more. Just have to deal with it.
So the way I use FB is by not throwing it first in footsies. You need to threaten with your normals first.
So lets say with Gief. Feel him out by throwing out c.mp or s.mk going in and out of his range. this is important. If you do not feel couomfortable with that then throw your own c.lp. Its pretty annoying at for him at it is for you. one you learn to control him with your normals is when he may want to jump in. Still, dont throw a fireball. Wait it out and see if he really wants to jump then AA when he does so. If he is not going to jump. Then you have your self a good footsie game. Throw your FB at this point.
Another pointer is to throw lp FB at far reach. The speed of the FB lets you control the screen more. Actually, you should throw lp FB most of the time anyways. Give it a try.

Played a decent Menat player yesterday in a FT5 and he streamed so I can link the vid, I thought I did quite well for that being my first proper go at the match up. The result is extremely close in the end ( literally last round). Overall if you can see somethings I was missing here give me a shout, I don’t have Menat unlocked to try things on her.

Notes about the match up -

@“HNIC Mike” was probably right, I jumped the gun a bit, it doesnt seem as hopeless as Guile, although it definitely does feel like a bad match. There seems to be spots where you can hit Menat where it doesn’t look like you can hit her. Fireballs are still useful since you can parry the reflect quite easy and build your own meter ( I didnt start doing this til about the 5th match when I realised). Don’t push buttons ( bad habit) on WU throw, she’s got that CC button that throws the ball. Jumping is viable, a few times I seemed to stuff the air grab, but unsure if this is lols online or legitimate, even then jumping now and again does seem worth the gamble.

Nothing too detailed, its a game of fundementals, I decided not to DP through her strings, two reasons - they don’t seem that threatening as far as getting thrown goes , think like Fang, but not as good - just block and get out, the other being I really wasnt sure about her frame data.

Yea i think its disadvantage but only slightly at the moment. Not only can you parry the reflect but if you’re good at mixing up your timing and speed at the half screen range it makes it tough for her to reflect in the first place.

She controls the pace but you’ll have chances to get going
