Can we sticky this thread for each new Capcom game/patch please.
All I can say is, Capcom can just die now. I had some fun with this game for kicks and although I only played it casually with my friends (we’re older folks in our 30’s now, this isn’t the 90’s for us anymore when we were priming it up) however we still had that competitive drive when we played this game.
Ryu got spanked by the patch and the worst part of it all…He Was Never That Overpowered To Begin With. How in the world does he no longer get ANY frame advantages on some of his attacks? Reading the list for Ryu I swear it was 99.9% nerfs! The other part that bothers me greatly also is the fact that Ryu needed meter to do good/great damage where as other characters whom were strong could do good/great damage without the use of meter.
It’s not like within this game we were dealing with Ryu using Genei-Jin as a Super. To me, it’s just frustrating and annoying at the approach Capcom takes when making these patches. Ryu aside, they even made nerfs to characters whom were not even good in this game? Whatever Capcom, keep listening to the Idiots out there.
Aren’t u exaggerating a little.
Yes they nerfed Ryu but not to an extend that he is now useless, they nerfed him to make him just as weak/strong like the rest of the cast.
- Gains around 30 meter per hit, which is pretty fair if u look at how much other zoners gain.
- They changed the startup of his medium and heavy attack which has the same amount of startup frames like all the others now.
- They increased the hurtbox of his air tatsumaki, not sure if this is really a problem. You’re doing air tatsumaki’s to cross them up not to throw them out randomly so…
- The HK soudan kick has less blockstun now, didn’t saw that one coming actually. I thought they were gonna buff this move a little, but oh well it’s stil as useless as before.
- ex tatsumaki is throw invincible from frames 3-7. Throws have a startup of 5 frames, so it’s a great frame trap. This is a BUFF !!
- solar plexus does +5 on hit and 0 on block, you can now link his solar plexus into cr.MP (it’s gonna be a 1frame link tho). This is a BUFF !!
So if you look at it objectively then you can tell that u can still do the same stuff as you did before. You just can’t play him like an idiot anymore.
Your cr.MP x cr.MP x cr.MK x Soudan kick is still gonna work !!
A 5-frame cancellable sweep was too much if you ask me. He did gain some decent buffs to make up for increased start-up on his normals, like SPS which I can see playing more of a role when coming in off a tag-cancel, at least with the right partner.
Ryu’s gonna do just fine, it just makes him a less braindead character.
You could never play Ryu like an idiot. Why does every person on here like to continue spewing this nonsense like as though Ryu could simply be won by doing ABC? Was he like Jin in T4 in which you could just 2,1, 1,2 JFLS for free and win? Or like CvS2 Sagat where you could win trades or outclass 90% of the roster with C.FP? My goodness you had to have some proper footsie gaming and good useage of meter in SFxT in order to make him strong.
The concept of “using like an idiot” is highly overused on a character within this game whom clearly is not evenly remotely on the threshold of being idiocy lvl, so I would digress from using such a statement.
Ryu never had crazy mixups or any of the nonsense to merit the nerfs that he got. If you want me to look at it objectively I’ll give you an objective answer. Simply buff the weak characters who had problems dealing with the stronger characters. Give them better priority on their skills or options so that they can compete with the stronger characters. That would’ve helped out tremendously in tipping the tide right here. This isn’t like Ryu was running around w/ WW. Guile like priorities, and when you read the patch there were so many unnecessary nerfs.
It just bugs me that someone like Ryu mainly gained most of his damage off of meter, and some of the best characters in the game could obtain over 300 damage even w/o using meter, something Ryu couldn’t even do consistently prior the Pre-Nerf unless he had meter at his disposal. Not of a fan of the patch whatsoever. Again, I can agree with your statement if Ryu was borderline untouchable and broken, however he was far from that along with the strong characters within the game.
Capcom could’ve simply improved the moderate to weaker characters to compete with the already established competitive characters and it would’ve made for a much more interesting game.
I probably wasn’t very clear when I said that u can’t play him like an idiot anymore.
Let me explain you what I mean with that.
If u threw out “random” air tatsumaki with ryu, then you weren’t playing stupid because the game rewarded you for doing so. His hurtboxes were too small to AA him properly and his hitboxes were so big that you didn’t had to time anything. If you were doing this in SF4 however then yes you were an idiot because that’s not how you’re supposed to use his air tatsumakis.
If u spammed his st.LP, cr.MP etc, then you weren’t playing him like an idiot, because again, the game rewarded you for doing so. The normals have a great amount of active frames, are really fast and positive on block. You didn’t even had to “try” and frametrap your opponent because they couldn’t even counter or outfootsie you since his normals were so much faster than everyone else. If u did this with another character or if u did this in SF4 then yes you were an idiot.
And that’s what I mean with you can’t play him like an idiot anymore, you now legitimately have to think before you act. You have to download your opponent, make reads and act accordingly.
I’m not saying that Ryu was the number one fighter in SFxTK, because I think Cody was overall better than him, and Julia her footsie game was also pretty brainless, but I’m just trying to show you why I think that these nerfs are justified.
The amount of meter he gains and the amount of block stun he loses in boost chain etc. are more or less system changes and not really character nerfs. It’s for every character the same now. Fireballs gains 0 on whiff and around 30 on hit, it’s now a standard rule in SfxTk.
The only REAL character nerfs he has got are the air tatsumaki and his normals.
• LP - Startup 3F->4F
• cr. MP - Startup 4F->5F
• cr. MK - Startup 5F->6F
• cr. HK - Startup 5F->7F
You’re saying that they shouldn’t nerf Ryu and just make everyone else stronger. But what is the difference in changing 3/4 of the cast their normals to match Ryu, OR change Ryu his normals to match theirs ?
Absolutely nothing.
Now what they did was actually both, they nerfed Ryu his normals a little and they buffed all the normals from the others.
Now almost everyone has 4 amount of startup frames for light attacks, between 5 and 7 amount of startup frames for medium attacks and between 7 and 9 amount of startup frames for heavy attack.
You are right that Ryu relies on meter to deal big damage but so does 3/4 of the cast. And don’t forget that Ryu has the tools to be played offensively AND defensively. Whereas some characters can only be played one way or the other.
So in that regard I don’t think that he really NEEDS meter to be effective (at least he doesn’t need it more than any other character). His links into soudan kick deals a decent amount of damage and he can still do his light tatsu x soudan kick combos in the corner.
Just don’t jump the gun and try out the new patch, that’s all I’m trying to say
Then explain why Jin now has a 4f c.mp.
I thought he was already pretty strong, if anything I thought they would nerf him. But then again, I don’t play him so I can’t tell.
I only know that he was a pain in the ass to play against, don’t understand why didn’t touch his anti air kick, he recovers just too fast imo.
He’s not the only one who got buffed either, they also buffed heihachi >.>
If u wanna know why Jin got a 4 cr.MP then u should probably go to the jin thread…
My point was more that Ryu seemingly wasn’t nerfed in line with the rest of the cast but deliberately dropped down a peg or two in the tier lists. Imo purely because of the dislike of the character from the general masses. People just don’t want Ryu near the top of the tiers.
Anyways, people dislike Ryu ?
He is one of the, if not THE most liked character in the sf series…
My guess is that they made the startup of his normals slower because capcom just thought that he was a bit too strong, they thought he had an unfair advantage footsie wise, I mean seriously how many characters have a Heavy kick that’s special cancel-able ?
That makes a lot more sense than “ryu got nerfed cause most people don’t like him”.
This is called a balance update, not a popularity update or whatever.
U might wanna check out the frame data of all the other characters, there are only a handful of characters that has faster normals than Ryu.
Just compare him to Ken and you’ll see
EDIT: And if you think that Ryu got nerfed too hard and is really bad or w/e then fine. Just remember that there are worse characters out there, and this is coming from someone who’s been playing Paul since day 1
The general masses adore Ryu. That’s why he turns up so many times when I play this game or SSF4 online.
I once had a streak of 15-20 battles against different users on PSN who kept selecting Ryu. It’s just so boring to face him again, and again,and again, and again,and again…
IIRC cr.HP is also 5 frames in activation so the SPS to cr.HP to SRK combo is back!!! YESH!!!
Yes it will work, but still I wouldn’t mind if they increased the hitstun some more.
It’s gonna a 1 frame link, so be sure to eat a 300-400 damaging combo if u drop it >.>
2 frame link since low fierce comes out in 4 and you can triple plink it, so I think you’ll be alright. Personally I can’t wait to use Solar Plexus as a legit way to start up pressure like in AE. +0 and Ryu’s got a 3 frame jab so you can start tick throw/counterhit setups easily off that now. Plus throws are 5 frames so you can’t get jabbed out of them as long as you’re +2. And that 5 frame invincible DP- bring on 2013!
Since Shoryuken’s block stun will be reduced to the point where it’s no longer safe to perform a switch cancel from it, I think a better alternative for this would be clst.HK, which hits twice giving you enough time to perform a switch cancel. According to the old frame datasheet, it has -2 on hit and -8 on block. There seems to be no problem on hit, since Juri is able to continue the combo after the switch cancel. I can’t test it on block though, so I can’t tell if it’s safe in case it got blocked. I also checked HP.Shoryuken and is said to be -34 on block although it’s still safe to do a switch cancel from it, so I suppose it would be safe to say that clst.HK switch cancel would be difficult to punish? Is clst.HK among Ryu’s moves that would be nerfed in 2013?
