Why does cr. mk combo with hk joudan randomly and theres times it don’t combo.
i didn’t even know that it was possible for it to combo. but my guess is from a counter hit or some magical range that allows it to.
It combos if low forward hits at towards the end of its active frames. I don’t know the exact frames, but you can try it out by buffering low forward into heavy joudan in footsies. Usually it won’t combo, but if the opponent walks into it late, then it will.
Julia: Punished DK pressure with Super. C.hk Cancle ANYTHING but hadoken(blockstring) and super would hit it. -2bar
Guile: Punished with Alphacounter Tag cancle(400 + dmg) -2 bars
Zangief: Punished with MASH Lariat Tag cancle(400+ dmg) -1bar
Rolento: Punished with Alpha Counter Tag cancle(400+dmg) -2bars
All characters got full combo from midpokes XX hk.joudan kick. as it had a huge open framewindow before it was active.
The Joudan kick was / is still going to be, a good tool to use midrange to get closer and hit characters that are looking for fireballs.
I get your point that Joudan isn’t a gapless pressure tool. But saying you can punish it with alpha counter tag isn’t a good argument to use against its usefulness. There are tons of strings in the game that can be punished like that, but it doesn’t make them bad strings. Especially since Ryu can mix it up by cancelling into fireball or delayed fireballs instead. By that logic midscreen Joudan is a bad option too, because it can be punished with alpha counter tag the same as if it was cancelled from a normal. To take it a step further, any attack at all that can be reacted to, like overheads, Rolento rekkas, chained pokes. etc.can be punished those same methods you listed.
Any attack can be reacted to. But the way Joudan kick is used, and the reason for its nerf is the continious Joudan kick pressure. Which is really nonexistant if two high level players fight. Regardless, I like the nerf. Fraud Ryus will be gone
Midscreen Joudan kicks will be used smart, like fireballs.
I don’t really understand the need for nerfing his Heavy Soudan Kick. I think it has to become alot slower but not punishable…Evil Ryu his heavy axe kick is positive on block and no one is complaining about that.
They made his Heavy soudan kick useless now, it’s SLOWER and -6 on block, might as well use the light and medium version since those are the only ones that you can combo into nyway. I don’t understand capcom’s reasoning at ALL !! It’s like they can’t think for themselves…

Well the heavy soudan kick WAS overpowered IMO, and yes they had to nerf it…but not to that extent !!
They could’ve fixed it in multiple ways, making it -3 on block, by increasing the pushback, or by increasing the startup frames, maybe even a combination of all three lol.
But now they just just made the heavy version useless, you have the risk of taking a hit in between the startup and active frames although I don’t know how much slower this move has become, and the risk of getting punished if it’s blocked…
It’s crazy that a company can nerf a move by 5 frames. It was obviously done to try and appease the whiners.
Well, they actually nerfed his Heavy soudan kick with 7 frames !!
My brain is -6 on block today.
Its things like this that really pisses me off about those who will bitch, whine and moan about characters being supposedly “Broken”. Then you’ll have the fighting game companies actually going out and nerfing these options or tools. I’m still curious why fighting game companies still hasn’t just tried to get more higher level players opinions on the matter before doing such things, and more importantly following what I stated earlier of improving the bad characters to compete with the stronger characters.
Would make for a far more interesting and better fighting game if they took this road and formula.
Alright so I am really pissed about this nerf cause it really puts a lot more weight on my 2nd character, Hwoarang.
So what is everybody doing about this nerf… I am not dropping Ryu cause of this but it makes it so much harder to apply pressure now.
As far as I see I am crouch hk cancel into fireball a lot more now and hit confirming into DK.
Other then that I find myself doing the cr. MK into fireball and playing a really sf4 based Ryu. Any other approaches…?
This soudan kick nerf is not that gamebreaking really, I think it’s unjustified.
He is still top tier imo, he still has so many great tools that others don’t have. Like a 3 frame reversal uppercut for example, great anti air and normals, his damage output is still pretty solid.
I still believe that almost no one is on par with him…So unless capcom is buffing other characters to the extend that they are on par with Ryu, I’m gonna stick to my Paul/Guile team =)
Ending blockstrings with c.hk into hado. Locking people down with repeated HK Joudans didn’t really serve much purpose outside of trolling and punishing the impatient anyway.
And just like that, the haters win once again…anyone seen what they’ve done to Ryu ON TOP OF how he’s already been patched?
