Ryu: General Strategy / Combos / Matchups

Yup, this happened to me a couple years ago when I first started 3s. I usually find myself playing a bit too recklessly when using the denjin so I stick to the shinku now. I only use the denjin now for fun or when I know I’m up against a scrub.

I actually started with SA1 because I thought Denjin was too unreliable to be useful. I slowly made the switch and it’s been good for me so far. It worked for me against some pretty good players around here, but I wanna see how far I can go with it.

Well, when I started playing 3s I played SA2because at that time I was a Scrub and also every one else, so it kinda worked for me, after that I switched to denjin because the idea of having a free stun was way to tempting, how ever by that time everyone else stoped being a Scrub and I couldnt get used to changing my play style, so I changed to SA1, however I mostly used it for EXs.

Now all I use is denjin

YES! More Denjin players! I still wonder why none of the Japanese experts has decided to really try his hand at Denjin…Or is there someone we haven’t heard of?

Vanao always pick denjin. I find his setups a bit iffy though… but due to his Jap rivals not used to dealing with it, he does pretty well with it. To my knowledge I think he’s the only one.

God damn…After playing some good players today, I’ve come to acknowledge that I’m gonna have to learn to use SA1 with Ryu. I played a Dudley who parried every single Denjin I threw at him. It was embarrassing. Should I alternate using both or should I just stick with one?

Since we’re in the matchups thread, does anyone have more detailed anti-Akuma strategies? I just cannot stop his offense at all. I thought I’d figured out some holes in it, but no. I got destroyed by him again and again.

I know there are probably people who would say just work on youy setups but I think there are times when even the most staunch denjin user would want the reliability of sa1. Either way its so easy to pick up it would be impractical to not know how to use it. It’s just a matter of learning c.lk (x2) > sa1, c.mk > sa1, and imo you should really learn meaty overhead > sa1.

Shoryu the demon flips, don’t use denjin. lk tatsu is punishable by c.fp > rh tatsu. I think the other tatsus are punishable with shoryu, not sure though. That should take care of akuma specific tricks.

SAII vs akuma FTW!!!

I can’t get in that close to attack unless I want to eat his BnB over and over. Thanks to Pherai for the tips, though!

can ryu beat chun and how do you play against makoto??!?!?

Nope. Ryu can’t beat Chun. If you pick Ryu and your opponent picks Chun, the game automatically skips to the Chun win quote screen with an MSF grade. GGPO Ryu.

i neg repped you for that post you fag.

and stuff

Gene sucks donkey balls. And stuff.

Man…when I first started 3s I steered clear of Denjin cause it was something I’ve never seen before. (I sucked with it) I started out on Shin Shoryuken & learned his footsie that way.
But seeing how Ryu is my main, I had to study & get good with all his supers. Now Denjin is #1!:wgrin:

Well, I wouldn’t say its necessary to learn denjin to be a good Ryu player. There is no matchup where it is clearly the best choice, just a different style. It’s fun without a doubt, but you can be just as successful with sa1 or sa2.

Right again, Pherai. IMO, It’s what seperates the top Ryu players, especially Frankie. Having seen Vanao and JEY try Denjin, I would still say Frankie does it best.

damn, does Georgia still play?

Eh… Denjin setups are pretty easy… After a crouching MK -> lk Tatsu, that buys you plenty of time to charge a 4-5 hit Denjin. You don’t need that crouching MK -> HP shoryu. I don’t really like Denjin though because it’s pretty easy to parry. Unless you shoot it close to the opponent when he’s knocked down, then you can poke him if he parries.

I wouldn’t give up the amount of EXs you can utilize with SA1 for SA3… I only use SA2 and 3 when I want to have fun. SA1 is for winning… Gotta love EX hadous. Well for me that is. I’ve been trying to get better with SA2.

My SA3 has been parried too many times. I figured it’s not worth it anymore. I don’t need a stun to win, though it does make it a lot easier.

EX hadous is a must with Ryu players IMO. That’s the safest “hard” attack on block I think. It’s not punishable by Ken’s SA3 and Chuns SA2 when blocked right?

I don’t know, everyone always says Ken is better, but I like Ryu more for his knockdowns.

I always say when using SA1… If you have full meter 2/2, you’re not playing you’re Ryu to it’s full potential. His EX Hadous and Tatsumakis(from certain distance) is always save on block so chip off damage, catch them in combos, own them, do whatever. That SA is just there to confirm more damage.

im trying to master and understand everything about ryu. understanding what his pokes lose and beat and such.

but what i really wanna know is (i know its a noob question) how to escape an expierenced yang’s mantis pressure. i know reversal SA2 can own the 2nd normal slash, is SA1 just as fast? if im low on meter will a normal srk or EX fireball do?

also about the denjin vs akuma. if i release it and he tries to teleport, if i release after will it hit him out of teleport?

and i seen some things about ryu’s taunt here bu didnt catch what it does exactly. if its any useful, when should it be done? should i give up getting close for a taunt?
