Ryu: General Strategy / Combos / Matchups

That’s why I said use dHP instead. Hits the twins fine.

I’ve had d+fp , hurricane combos miss on yun too many times to rely on it. I have no idea why it will miss, if you do it in practice mode it lands. Then in matches it randomly whiffs. Even if you watch Frankie play he always does Sweet Chin Music against Yun, even though Hurricane Kick does more damage, gives better post position and a bit of meter back. There’s a reason for that. It also does this against Oro as well. Always use Sweet Chin Music against those characters.

That sucks. Good to know, though. I’ve never seen it whiff but I wouldn’t want to risk it, so I’ll donkey kick them from now on.

yeah ive never had that shit connect, and who’d want to pass up a chance to emulate the hbk

What is Ryus tier? Isnt he an upper tier?

mid tier

:frowning:

What is the tier list in the game then? I am n00b dont hit me. :frowning:

All you need to know as a RYU user is that chun is very very bad for you. Top level Yun is as well but most likely you will never have to face that match up since there aren’t many in America.

c.hp, hk tatsu wil always hit the twins, i never miss that shit

Fucking around I think I found out how it can miss. After a jump in, you hit yun and he moves back, then you hit them with c. hp and they move back again, then the first hit of the rh. hurricane can whiff. If it’s close c.hp, rh hurricane it will always hit.

I’ve also had s.fp, ex. chin music miss on a crouching chun, such bullshit!

After you land a Denjin and have no meter: 3 crouching strongs add enough meter so you when you do your jump in you can add an ex-donkey kick before they can mash out.
Edit: the number of crouched strongs needed depends on how many hits you charged the denjin.

d+fp

After a low parry from about standing forward range this works really well. Usually I’d low parry something like Ken’s d+forward and go retaliate with my own d+forward, ex fireball (outside of ex spinkick range). That does a tiny bit of damage though, nothing for someone to fear. D+fp has an amazing ability to hit limbs in general, and works in situations like this for more damage. D+fp, ex fireball is easy to do , but you can also get low parry d+fp, ex sidekick which is great damage. It’s difficult since you have do to the hcf very fast. But worth learning imo. Unfortunately ex chin music can miss on small characters (chun :wasted:) so you gotta stick with ex fireball on that whore.

Ugh, just because you’ve never missed it doesn’t mean it can’t miss.

starting at about 3:25 which direction do you hit to parry the unblockable? I can’t think of a way to set this up in parry training so I don’t know how to test it.

it won’t miss if you do it right

I’m not really sure what I’m doing wrong but I assume it must have something to do with the idle movement of a stunned Yun, for which I’d rather not time my jump in with that, and just go for the safe bet. I think even Frankie3s goes for a snap kick after denjin against the twins, so I think its pretty safe to say it is missable (the hurricane that is).

True. It’s what Frankie always does. And against the twins’ rather weak stamina, it’s pretty good.

B here, sharpening Ryu again. My wake-up needs improvement, so what kind of attack patterns should I use and how do I make my opponent fall for an attack when I have them down in the corner?

I usually do one of the following:

standing close forward into EX spin kick

late overhead strong into SAI if connected

low forward into EX spin kick or EX fireball

double low short into SA I

low short into kara throw

I have a hard time also not being so robotic with my attack patterns and pokes, I need to be a bit more loose. Any suggestions?

If the fierce hits at max range, standing or c. fierce, the rh hurricane kick will whiff. Doesn’t matter if you execute right or not, if the distance is a little off you whiff and Yun kills Ryu for free. Crouching mp, rh hurricane is a lot more reliable for 4 points less damage. it only misses at max range as well but obviously it has a lot more range than fierce punches, so in a combo it’s almost impossible to miss.

I was watching watching a match video of Frankie and I noticed a neat setup I haven’t seen before. I’d try it out myself, but the players are way better than me and I never get the opportunity. It was something into far strong, fireball, denjin. Do you guys know anything about it?
