Ryu General Discussion Thread: Frame Data, Strategies, Combos, etc

Is it just me or is Ryu’s hair kinda look like Captain Planet’s hairstyle besides the mullet? lulz?

Is there a way to get more than 3 Hits with the Ultra after the super juggle?
I tried f.hp, j.dp linked to super to ultra in the corner but the ultra will always score 3 hits.
I’ve varied the timing but 3 hits is max I get
Is it something about the super that doesn’t allow more then 3 hits afterwards?

I believe there’s a maximum number of jugglehits you can get. I think its 8, so after the 5hits of the super, you onlyget 3 with ultra. Te onlytime using super into ultra is worthwhile is at the nd of the match when you have full bar andd nee finish off. Generally speaking, youl onlyget about 80 - 120 more dmg after hitting super into ultra than you would finishing a combo with utra. So use it for a kill, but not otherwise.

i’ve tried searching, but i was just wondering what ‘translate’ mean. for example in his frame data his lk hurricane kick it says frames 7-20 (translate).

“(translate)” doesn’t mean anything. Most of the data in the tables in the wiki is from Japanese sources. (translate) stands for untranslated text from the original source.
In this particular case (LK hurricane) there probably was some text explaining that frames 7-20 go through projectiles.

am i severely gimping myself if i cannot do the following?

c.lpx3 dp fadc ultra

and after a FA

f+fp,c.lp,c.fp into whatever.

pretty much i cannot combo into ultra unless it’s a throw mix up.

think i’ll be ok with just playing zoning?

SEVERELY gimping? No , but it wont hurt to make love to training mode for a while :wink:
Eventually , you will learn those anyway , so why not right away`?

I’ve had pretty good luck with doing a tatsu over Sim’s ultra when he does it from just outside sweep range. I’m not sure if it’s guaranteed or if I’ve just caught the guy off guard since he was probably anticipating a jump in or turtle.

Lord no. You need more than zoning. I made a point of getting decent at spacing and zoning with fireballs… playing defensive basicly for the entire length I owned this game and I neglected the footsies game and I’m paying hardcore for it now. Don’t do it man. Work on footsies more than anything, it’s the most important part of this game as everything offensive and defensive stems from this part of the fights

Yeah; Kuma Oni is right. You cantjust get away with zoning. HOWEVER; depending on how good you want to become, it doesnt really matter if you cant do a few specific combos. Why can’t you not do a FA into ultra though? I presume you mean an FADC? End of the day, it really depends on how good you want to be. If you wanna play tournys, you need to be able to pull off the ultra from any ooppurtunity (and given were talking about ryu here, there are a lot) If you just play for fun and wanna be OK, why not try just getting 1 ultra combo you can rely on? I’m sure you could pull off an SRK > FADC > Ultra if you practiced it enough (assuming you have 2 hands)… … also, if you do just want to be good (and not GREAT), combos into ultra are far from everything. You’d do much better having a very solid ground game and strategy than being able to combo into ultra (hell, if your ground game is great, you probs wont need to ultra against mediocre players).

btw; how the hell do you ‘throw mix up’ into an ultra? Sounds very Gouken-ian (thats a new phrase, I coined it) to me.

Simple question:

Does anyone have a consistent use for st.MK?

Work on the first one.

The second one is a bit hard to do consistently, so what I do is forget the c.lp, c.fp and go straight into a dragon punch after the f+fp.

Does Ryu have a way to combo into ultra without burning EX stock or a anti-air dp? (I’m looking at this as in a way of playing against Ryu)

Without EX:
j.mp juggle into ultra
lp srk into ultra
srk trade into ultra
Against some characters, in the corner, you can pull a max range lp srk (hit with the side of ryu’s arm) and hit ultra when you land (Ken comes to mind).

With EX:
Corner hado or tatsu into ultra
FADC into ultra

Correct me if I missed anything

Doesn’t the lp dp only work on reversal/AA?

j.MP, ultra only works if you catch them air to air with the j.MP

dp.LP, ultra only works as anti-air.

The only setup that BEYBase missed off the top of my head is a mid-screen EX fireball xx FADC, ultra.

So if you lock a Ryu in the corner with no stock and play the ground-dash game your pretty safe from ultra.
