A lot of people are asking for srk trade > ultra removed and I agree. It should reset or knock both players down. It’s a little mindless, a mistimed srk doesn’t deserve a reward.
lp srk could use some toning down too, IMO. It should match ken’s lp srk. I used to think that they should be swapped but I’m not too fond of the idea of having a relatively safe 3 frame startup, high priority move in the game.
Otherwise, Ryu should be the gold standard for character balance in the game. He’s not overpowered in general, but when in comparison with the rest of the cast the disparity kinda shows.
If the only thing that ends up happening to Ryu is the loss of trade ultra, it will be really quite sad. The trade ultra really is only an issue at lower levels. At high levels, ryus don’t really trade shoryus.
If Ryu stays the same, hopefully they can take out absolute guard/easy reversals. This would actually lower ryu, 'gat, and gief down a bit. Despite popular belief, once ryu has two bars and starts getting put into block stun, there’s almost no reason for him NOT to mash out shoryus until your op pushes himself out of shoryu range. This fear effectively kills offensive options for about all the cast, no matter what level of play.
Quoted for absolute truth. Extremely solid offense + super extremely solid defense = ryu.
Otherwise, Ryu should be the gold standard for character balance in the game.
If every character was like ryu, noone would be able to do much of anything because just about anything could end up as an ultra or super, plus his moves that he can toss out seemingly random at times would be extremely hard to punish.
It would remove that attack from his repertoire as there’d be no real reason to use it. Would it kill him? No, but it’d limit his options and tone his damage down a bit, which isn’t a terribly bad idea.
That’s how most characters are anyways. When Rose has ultra forget even jumping; when Abel has ultra projectiles (except for Guile) become a no-no. Almost every character in the game has an outrageously easy time landing their ultra (caveat: almost, several characters have a surprisingly difficult time doing so). This isn’t something unique to Ryu, he’s just more commonly played so it stands out more.
In comparison, Balrog can land his ultra off of his anti-air without the person even being in the air. Balrog’s headbutt is incredibly easy to hit-confirm and leads to his Ultra. His headbutt also has incredible amounts of invincibility frames on it… I mean, weren’t you the one who earlier stated that you wished more people were like Balrog?
Ryu is neither the best turtle or the best rushdown. He has neither the best zoning nor the best mix-up. He doesn’t have the best wake-up pressure or footsies. He doesn’t even have the best ultra or super. What he does have is the ability to be pretty solid at all of that. That’s why some look to him as the premise of a balanced character. He is designed to be the proverbial “jack of all trades, master of none” and he succeeds very well at that.
if they leave Ryu the way he is, he will just replace Sagat on the tiers list (because we all know sagat is getting the nerf). Ryu is EXTREMELY close to sagat in terms of tiers. He has 50,001 more ways into connecting his ultra with no scaling and is a lot more mobile then sagat. Nerfing sagat won’t do anything if capcom doesn’t do anything to Ryu unless capcom seriously beefs up the lower teired chars in SF4 which we all know won’t happen by much. SSF4 will be basically SF4 but with Ryu taking Sagats place.
IMO DP trade into Ultra needs to get removed. For a character that can setup into ultra in a billzillion different ways you would think capcom would put some scaling into it. His ultra needs to seriously get scaled since he has so many ways into connecting it.
What? Ryus has the most versatile ultra in the entire game. He pretty much has the most setups into connecting his ultra in so many given scenerios. Very few chars in SF4 can connect there ultra the way Ryu can.
In addition. Regular Super is one of the FASTEST supers in the entire game and at the same time has great versatility for setting it up with 0 recovery while 99% of the cast have massive recovery on theirs and not have no where near the setup potential as Ryus super.
Not going to happen. Sagat has a whole list of 7-3’s, last time I checked Ryu had none. If anyone replaces Sagat, it’ll be either Akuma, a new character, or one of the Arcade characters who gets more buffs than they deserve.
Rufus has more unique setups. Balrog connects his as much if not more despite having only really one setup (with three variations) because his fewer setups are safer and require less EX bar. And then there’s Seth. Ryu’s is fourth or fifth.
Gen’s and Honda’s are more game changing, but his super’s top 4 in the game, yeah. Which pretty much sums the character up. Rushdown, Zoning, footsies, mixup, pressure, runaway, in all of these he’s at worst 5th or 6th out of 25 characters, combined with the best anti-rushdown tools in the game is what makes him top tier, without having a single truly devastating matchup in his favour (that I’m aware of).
While there are changes to Ryu which would make me feel better, ultimately he isn’t broken, attempting to “fix” him is unlikely to end with a more interesting character, so I’m going to say it’s probably a bad idea.
There are ppl that actually go by that? I mean seriously, that chart is just estimated. In the end its really about the players skill then a bunch of numbers on a chart. If that chart were true Diago wouldn’t of demolished Magos sagat 20 something to 4 or whatever the score was the last time they played. (Anyone have a link of the Daigo vs Mago match?)
This is 100% wrong. If you honestly think this is true then obviously you have never seen or played a good Ryu before. First off, anyone here will agree that Ryu has more setups for ultras then Rufus. And assuming even if Rufus has more, Ryus setups for ultra is definitely more efficient to land then Rufus. Ryu has numerous l.sh confirmed combos that will connect into ultra anywhere in the screen whereas Rufus has to have the right conditions to connect his ultra. For example some of his setups can only be done in the corner or only when the opponent jumps (which rarely ever happens in high lvl play), Ryu even has one of Rufus’s ultra setups the J.MP in the air (just like rufus j.rh) which lands into an ultra (scratch one off of rufus’s setups since ryu already has it.) Lets not forget that almost ALL trades goes in favor of ryu nearly 100% of the time because of red fb/ultra/super and NO scaling at the same time. With all that your gonna say Rufus has more setups then Ryu? I highly doubt that. Rufus really has only 4 main ways (really 3 since one of them rarely ever happens in high lvl play) he can easily connect his ultra, and thats the J.RH > Ultra, tornado into corner > Ultra, S.SH chain link into S.RH > Ultra and Messiah Kick > Ultra.
???
Lemme guess, a few buffs here and there that he already doesn’t need? Lemme guess, you play Ryu right?
And that doesn’t even count Ryu’s amazing super traps and setups…while Rufus’s super is almost always considered a giant waste of meter unless it closes out a match.
Setups different from his Ultra setups:
HK Tatsu crossup > super (from anywhere on the screen)
Fireball trap (opponent neutral jumps a fireball from full screen) > Super
Rufus can still be zoned and has terrible footsies, and not many ways to defend himself when he has no EX messiah. Balrog can be zoned or focused and also has other weaknesses, ryus only weakness is that he doesn’t have health or single hit damage like sagat(is that a weakness?)
Balrogs ultra usually does damage that people don’t care about, it’s the positioning that makes it good as it usually puts the opponenet in the corner right next to him, and ofcourse ryu can escape that anyways.
While akuma is considered within the trinity, he can’t just setup supers and ultras like ryu can,he has clear weaknesses so he definitely won’t replace sagat. Sagat has weaknesses too btw and he’s getting nerfed so why would they break the game by attempting to buff everyone to the point where they have no weakness?
Rufus’s setups are way easier to utilize however. EX Hadoken and EX Tatsu in the corner are basically the same setup. 4 out of the 5 Ultra setups require your opponent to either jump or be in the corner.
Rufus, on the other hand, can move you to the corner with his tornado -> Ultra link, only needs the opponent to be airborne for the j.HK setup, and can hit confirm his target combo -> Ultra off a well placed dive kick.
Ryu technically has more, but Rufus and Balrog’s are clearly better. Balrog links off a headbutt, near unconditionally, meterlessly. Or he can 1-frame link it off a jab. Ryu’s hit confirm Ultra links off a c.LP or c.LK cost 1/2 meter, as only the one FADC -> Ultra setup works off that.
Rufus’ super may be a waste of meter, but EX Messiah kick and EX Snake Strike are damn near as good as supers. And cost 1/4 meter.
