Let’s face it. Alt Costumes breath life into the game. Lots of money is spent to design and program them into the game. The person designing them is Daigo Ikeno. He drew the art for 3rd Strike as well.
Which alts did you like? Which alts did you not like? Talk about the influences for certain Alts. Which alts do you want? Doyou think the fans have any control over what we get other than general sales numbers?
Alt 1: Personally, I find that most of Ryu’s alts aren’t up to par for what we would expect for a main character. I do think they got it right with his Alternate Costume 1. It’s beautiful-- because it matches with his badass battle experienced character.
(Im a big Street Fighter art dork. Many may not know this, but Akiman (One of Capcom’s major artists who designed most of the characters) drew Ryu in this battered, no gi top, form. Way before SF4 was ever announced. Was also done in the Ryu Final manga.) It was a good choice by Capcom.
Alt 2: Ehh… It was a step in the right direction. Ryu is a modern-day samurai/ Musashi. But I think a lot of us, would have preferred the more typified Samurai style alt. It was very Japanese, yet I dont think very pleasing to the eye. Just didnt seem rugged.
Alt 3: What were they thinking? I wonder if this is another “Capcom gives what they think westerners want.” 50 Cent Ryu. Okay to be fair, the design is based on Japanese street fashion or harbor fishermen. The necklace he wears, in the description actually says it’s Ryu’s “gym key.” I’d like to think Ryu works out in the mountains and doesn’t guido it up.
Alt 4: Another what were they thinking. It’s not bad. But for the main flagship character it’s a bit meh. Ryu wearing sunglasses? Riiight.
Seth Killian and DLC Costumes:
A few years ago, we asked Seth Killian if maybe Capcom could give us a description of the proposed Alt DLC costumes and people could vote. Whatever gets the most votes would fairly, be the DLC costume we get. He loved the idea and said “Why didnt we do that earlier. I have a meeting with Ono san tomorrow.” This was after one of Capcomunity’s events. Sadly, he left the company a few months later.
I am LOVING some of those alts in the concept art page up there. I think anything with facial hair suits Ryu. I like the top right one, with a beard and scars. It fits his gruff rough character.
2-The Ryu costume with giant prayer beads on his torso was cool and instant favourite, but watching it a second time they just try too hard to change physical appearance (beard+shaved head+tan), becoming styistically alienating
1- basically the same, slighty changed colors, and a black band on the shorts as hint to Ryu’s black belt (BJ Penn wear something similar iirc)
2- More or less same concept, but basic ryu, the red band on the arm(removed from the ankle) and a less dead, more SF2ish color scheme, still nothing too flashy
I agree with you there. Udon tries, but it’s just not the same.
Yeah I like the concept of a “purified Ryu” but the prayer beads were a bit much and even reminded me of another character from a different series. I think people (the few who have seen the concept art) were attracted to the prayer bead one because it suggests that he’s conquered his hadou.
I used to draw fan art around the SF3 time and MMA Ryu was something I’d draw often. Was excited to see it in Ikeno’s designs. I might get to see Ikeno in a few weeks for a festival. Dunno how much time I’d have to even ask about some designs.

My fav hands down is number 4 the Musashi look for Ryu is freaking awesome it goes wit him perfectly . Ryu with long hair makes him look way more bad ass also . Ive been playing Street Fighter since the world warrior & Ryu has always had the same look & all . But i think a change like that would be the best thing to do . Capcom needs to get out of there comfort zones & take a chance with changes like that us fans would love it
Exactly! The ones who tend to keep Ryu the same are casual Ryu fans, people who havent followed all there is to know about him. And yes he has so many close resemblances to Musashi. I wish they would make that an alt
