Rufus Strategy/Combo Thread (because you can't poke forever...)

That is awesome too man, you have been super helpful.

In fact…the whole rufus sub forum seems to have a lot of helpful people…looks like the Rufus Army has another member!

As for comboing into GT, I have been trying to get FP -> FP-GT down cold and by using the Plinking method, that seems to help.

So my inputs as displayed by the input display become:

f FP
f MP FP
df
d
FP

And of course I get the second FP from the plink…gives me a free chance to hit that link.

noticed that quite often when doing a block string ending w/an EX gt, quite often the opponent although blocking the combo will be hit with the final palm strike of the gt. :encore: I think this is maybe because absolute guard doesn’t extend to moves w/a vacuum effect and so if you’re opponent has let go of block during the combo they’ll get hit. is this right?

I have noticed that if you use his Messiah kick with HK, often that last hit goes right over a crouching opponent…

I guess that is even more of an incentive to mix up between LK, MK, HK, and just dropping the second part altogether in favor of a throw/GT/whatever.

That is annoying though…

I would suggest plinking the first FP so that when you get to working on Rufus’ b&b s. lk <1 frame link> s. hp xx hp gt it already feels familiar. After plinking to start, I hold down the mp so that I don’t get its negative edge which might result in mp/ex gt. So for the hp gt cancel i get a negative edge, a press, and another negative edge at the end. That’s 3 chances without mashing.

Here’s what I like to see:

(invisible negative f FP)
f FP
f (invisible negative FP)
df
d
MP FP
FP

edit: What I like to see and what I do see can be miles apart–hate to give the wrong impression. I started Rufus with a month of ranked matches and no training mode so now I’m going back and trying to undo a lot of bad habits.

Yup :frowning:

There are other times that half of your Messiah kick will whiff on crouching opponents. (Vega comes to mind) And that is even worse.

Also, stay away from regular messiah, especially the MK one since even if it hits, you dont get to combo a lk extension off of it.

And, like Sven said, plink the first part, the second part isn’t hard once you get it. The timing is pretty forgiving.

Learn lk, hp xx hp GT when you get hp xx hp GT down. It helps tremendously.

I dunno man, LK Messiah Kick’s gotten me out of stupid throw attempts, a tad better than teching, and free Ultra if you’ve got two bars.

On half of EX Messiah missing on some crouchers, that is annoying, but I haven’t gotten around to testing and writing those down in my thread (though I should!).

Hmmm, lk Messiah does come out pretty fast. Will have to try it.

Yeah, I think you should take another look at it. I bust out lk messiahs as a regular part of my rushdown plan, usually to a pretty good degree of effectiveness. Granted, a lot depends on your opponent, so if they are countering every time, just stop using it in favor of something that is getting through…

Last night I was forced into a spot where I had no meter but needed an in-your-face counter and lk messiah came through for me multiple times.

One problem I discovered is that I’m too eager to input the second half of the messiah…so even if the first part is blocked, all too often I still go for it…and either it whiffs or they block and punish.

I need to get that down, and I still suck at the repeated dive kick rushdown.

Need moar training mode!

But I will say that last night pretty much cemented Rufus for me as one of my mains. He is amazing and I have no idea why I waited this long to pick him up.

Yes… yes… let the fat flow through you, be one with the jiggle of his holy stomach. err… yeah…

In addition to working on the MK FADC, I’ve been working on the dk, s.lk s.fp xx FGT, but I can’t get the fp to link. You were saying its a 1 frame link? What button do you use for plinking?

I do lk, hp~mp. Gives u the HP twice, and makes things twice as easy to time.

hmm I’ll give it a try then when I go home tonight. Hadn’t found a move I really needed to do that for yet, so its going to take some practice for sure.

So I found out a couple of things today in a Balrog match.

If you focus crumple and then roll, you end up going through them after you hit them and makes almost a cross-up of sorts, will try it more.

Also, a Cross-up dive kick that counter hits can be combo’d into ultra.

EDIT: Can’t recreate the Crumple into roll in training mode :frowning:

Also, the cross-up dive kick counter hit must be on wake up preferably in the corner.

Ive tried that crumple roll before, there’s a part which flicks them up when the roll is executed I was hoping it may lead into some FLASHY aka ultra setup lol. At the moment I’ am trying to look for something new to do with Rufus, since other people have found stuff to do like EX cancel to Ultra or another EX (Kinda hit that wall moment).

The only new thing Ive started to do more is delayed or held F.Galatic Tornadoes, its a nice corner trap towards people who decide they want to neutral jump or hold block to see what you may do. For these situations I tend to delay the first half of the spin then push forward for the last part, so you will get part of the spin leading towards the face-palm when it connects lol (Ultra if you got meter). For this you may want to be standing 3/2 characters spaces away, If your not rushing down on a characters I feel its good to keep this spacing so you can catch a Cr.MP or EX/Snake strike encase they try to jump out.

c.lk juggles off of j.rk. that was a nice little something i found yesterday.

They standing or jumping?

You mean you can almost OTG with c.lk? Hmmmmmmmm

People are actually using plinking?
I tried using it with rufus and I actually had a harder time doing the combos.

juggle is defined as hitting the opponent before they touch the ground.

otg=off the ground.

but it makes them quickflip into a standing state somewhat unexpectedly

Ehh, that’s what I meant

Will have to try it out.

Rufus is able to eat the entire left side of the Taco Bell menu and still have enough room for dessert.
