RPGs that are worth playing

Yes Shadow Hearts III is great and IMO Shadow Hearts II is a classic game.

Other RPG games I’ve played and that I love are.

Final Fantasy V-VI-VII-VIII-IX-X
The Legend of Dragoon
Chrono Trigger
Magna Carta II
Odin Sphere
Golden Sun

Special mention for Parasite Eve I-II because they have RPG elements and I love them to death.

Other big RPG titles mentioned here they I’ve played and really didn’t like are:

Lost Odyssey
Rogue Galaxy
Final Fantasy X-2-XII

I’ve actually nearly completed the first two (LO too unfair and slow and RG too lame story wise) FF games I’ve only completed because they are FF (X-2 too happy and XII to much fighting)

I’m sure I’m forgetting a lot of games I love and didn’t, but it’s all I can think of right now.

Props to ya. Have you played Der Langrisser for the SNES? Not as awesome as Warsong, but still awesome.

If you are gonna play shadow hearts, i recommend playing them in order. Except the 3rd one since its a new story and all. Shadow hearts is the most under rated rpg imo.

Anyone played FF13 yet (via import or living in japan)?

It’s actually the only one I’ve played and it’s one of my favorite RPGs ever.

I watched XIII on a stream on the Japanese launch day. Actually, I saw pretty much the whole game, including the ending. Without spoiling anything for anybody, I’ll just say it (in terms of gameplay and design) has a lot in common with X and X-2. Not my cup of tea, but I more or less parted ways with that series after FF6 and FFT.

And yeah, it sucks that the Langrisser series is doomed to obscurity. I highly recommend Warsong for the Genesis. Der Lang was great with its branching stories, but the battles didn’t feel as epic as the ones in Warsong. A Langrisser collection has been released on the Japanese PSN, but… it ain’t coming over here. Sucks.

I borrowed it from someone for a small while, didn’t get to play much of it.

I was somewhat hoping they’d forget they loaned it to me so I wouldn’t have to give it back.

Yeah I’m a bad person.

I might look it up online and see if I can snag a copy.

You guys should import the SRW series on PS2, the best SRPG investment you could ever make imo…

Oh yeah I forgot a few

-Earthbound
-Shining Series
-Phantasy Star 1-4 and PSO
-Golden Sun
-Final Fantasy Legend
-Vagrant Story
-Xenogears
-Parasite Eve
-KOTOR

Parasite Eve ftw. Playing that again currently.

Deus Ex </thread>

I wonder when Sony’s gonna get off its ass and start putting up those PS1 RPGs on the PlayStation Store? If they like money, they should do it ASAP.

I looked around the Web for the first Shadow Hearts, and damn it’s kinda expensive. It’s gonna be fun finding this game for a decent price…

I really should focus on playing through Divine Divinity. Every time I play the game, I never get out of the forest area. I like the game quite a bit, but other games just seem to take up my time.

Since we’re listing our favourite RPGs, my #1 favourite is Valkyrie Profile. I love how it plays like no other JRPG that ever existed. And I’m sure SRKers can appreciate the mechanics of the combat system.

Can someone name me an RPG where you DONT save the world, or aren’t some type of “chosen one”?

I’ve been looking for one but I can’t seem to find any.

Charles Barkley Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden

amazing game

-SMT: Nocturne (You don’t save the world, but you recreate it, and it isn’t even you who gets to rule it)
-FF6 (It’s more “salvage what’s left of the world” rather than saving it)

Someone else can take over…

Planescape: Torment. Your struggle in that game is almost entirely personal.

Saga Frontier.

Panzer Dragoon Saga is GOD!!!

Tengai Makyo series was pretty awesome too!

Not directly related to the OT, but…Anyone play tabletop RPGs? D&D, Pathfinder, GURPS and the like?

Classic RPGs (Pre 32-Bit)

SNES Final Fantasies (Can’t go wrong with 4, 5, or 6, no not mystic quest, but mystic quest if it didn’t have the name FF in it, might be okay…)

Chrono Trigger (WHERE THE HELL IS MY REAL SEQUEL SQUARE!!!)

Earthbound (Yeah, PSI powers ARE awesome)

Secret of Mana Series (Oh Seiken Densetsu 3 is really awesome, go find it, its really worth it)

Phantasy Star, Phantasy Star 2, Phantasy Star 4 (As a real PS nerd, I have a real hard time taking 3 seriously… if it had a different name…maybe… Oh and where the hell is PS5??? Stupid Sega…)

Eye of the Beholder, EOB 2, EOB 3

Baldur’s Gate Series (all types of awesome)

Planescape Torment (You know what, lets just say all the D&D games from Black Isle / Bioware… they were all awesome…)

Lunar The Silver Star and Lunar Eternal Blue (And I will stick to EB on the Sega CD thank you! Magic Experience rocked and why they had to dumb down the greatest game of the Sega CD for PS1 users still pisses me off to no end… oh and they actually screwed up the entire story in Silver Star Story on Saturn / PS1 so LTSS also should be played on Sega CD)

Mystara (Tactical RPG on Sega CD… It’s actually VERY VERY good)

32 - Bit Generation and forward

Playstation era Final Fantaies (I personally despise FF8 but I’m in the super minority here…)
Chrono Cross (Not the true sequel I wanted, but good)
SaGa Frontier 1 and SaGa Frontier 2 (2 was VERY underrated IMO)
The Tales Series Games
Star Ocean Series (Although, does Star Ocean 3 kind of kill the series for anyone else? I mean really? Everything I did in SO 1 and SO 2 really meant nothing because I live in a universe controlled by extra dimensional beings who irreperably destroy EARTH??? I don’t know… This made it hard for me to play the 4th Star Ocean, because nothing I would do really mattered)
Legend of Dragoon was pretty good
Grandia 2 on the Dreamcast was pretty good
Knights of the Old Republic and KOTOR 2
Jade Empire
Arc the Lad Series
Front Mission Series

Recent Releases Worth Noting
Dragon Age Origins was very good
Mass Effect 1 and 2 (But maybe its just me, but I think Mass Effect 2 went too much in the I’m going to be a shooter direction and really lost so much of what an RPG is, no item management, no XP, no real variability, it feels like a 3rd person squad shooter with powers, maybe I feel this way because I suck at shooters and hence could play ME 1 because I could get awesome equipment to overcome my personal weaknesses)

That’s all I got for now.

OH! Portables!

Golden Sun Series, very very good.

I don’t think an RPG has ever angered me more than Shining in the Darkness. It was a really good game if it worked. Maybe it was just me but I would put 30 hours into it and then it would glitch and my save was gone. About a year later I got even farther and then it did the same thing. They should have called in Crying in the Darkness.
