Classic RPGs (Pre 32-Bit)
SNES Final Fantasies (Can’t go wrong with 4, 5, or 6, no not mystic quest, but mystic quest if it didn’t have the name FF in it, might be okay…)
Chrono Trigger (WHERE THE HELL IS MY REAL SEQUEL SQUARE!!!)
Earthbound (Yeah, PSI powers ARE awesome)
Secret of Mana Series (Oh Seiken Densetsu 3 is really awesome, go find it, its really worth it)
Phantasy Star, Phantasy Star 2, Phantasy Star 4 (As a real PS nerd, I have a real hard time taking 3 seriously… if it had a different name…maybe… Oh and where the hell is PS5??? Stupid Sega…)
Eye of the Beholder, EOB 2, EOB 3
Baldur’s Gate Series (all types of awesome)
Planescape Torment (You know what, lets just say all the D&D games from Black Isle / Bioware… they were all awesome…)
Lunar The Silver Star and Lunar Eternal Blue (And I will stick to EB on the Sega CD thank you! Magic Experience rocked and why they had to dumb down the greatest game of the Sega CD for PS1 users still pisses me off to no end… oh and they actually screwed up the entire story in Silver Star Story on Saturn / PS1 so LTSS also should be played on Sega CD)
Mystara (Tactical RPG on Sega CD… It’s actually VERY VERY good)
32 - Bit Generation and forward
Playstation era Final Fantaies (I personally despise FF8 but I’m in the super minority here…)
Chrono Cross (Not the true sequel I wanted, but good)
SaGa Frontier 1 and SaGa Frontier 2 (2 was VERY underrated IMO)
The Tales Series Games
Star Ocean Series (Although, does Star Ocean 3 kind of kill the series for anyone else? I mean really? Everything I did in SO 1 and SO 2 really meant nothing because I live in a universe controlled by extra dimensional beings who irreperably destroy EARTH??? I don’t know… This made it hard for me to play the 4th Star Ocean, because nothing I would do really mattered)
Legend of Dragoon was pretty good
Grandia 2 on the Dreamcast was pretty good
Knights of the Old Republic and KOTOR 2
Jade Empire
Arc the Lad Series
Front Mission Series
Recent Releases Worth Noting
Dragon Age Origins was very good
Mass Effect 1 and 2 (But maybe its just me, but I think Mass Effect 2 went too much in the I’m going to be a shooter direction and really lost so much of what an RPG is, no item management, no XP, no real variability, it feels like a 3rd person squad shooter with powers, maybe I feel this way because I suck at shooters and hence could play ME 1 because I could get awesome equipment to overcome my personal weaknesses)
That’s all I got for now.
OH! Portables!
Golden Sun Series, very very good.
