RPGs that are worth playing

demons souls is down right amazing. I really wish there were more games like this. One of the best games i have ever played.

Super Mario RPG and any of the Breath of Fire games.

I started playing Disgaea on PSP and this game is the shit, I can’t believe I put if off for so long. Fun as fuck.

Anyone have an opinion on Star Ocean 1 & 2. How do they hold up?

Persona is part of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise.

haven’t played Star Ocean 1 on PSP yet, but 2 is really good. Everyone has a standard combo, making some characters a lot more useful in battle now. And the voice acting is really good. Overall I enjoyed the game a lot

Aside from alot of things already mentioned

The Arc the Lad series. Putting 400 hours into a series never felt so good *Not counting Disgaea. I fucking love Disgaea.

I’m currently trying to decide on which 360 RPGs to buy… I’m all about getting a good deal on aging great games. I’m open to paying for current ones too if they are highly recommended.

So far from my own research and the thread, I have on my wish list:

  1. Tales of Vesperia
  2. Elder Scrolls IV
  3. Mass Effect

As for my own experiences I enjoyed Final Fantasy VII (my fav of them all), VI, and even VIII. I enjoyed Xenogears but as mentioned it kinda crapped off near the end and also lacked the graphics and soundtrack of Final Fantasies of the same era.

Really enjoyed LSSSC as well.

I’m hoping that the 360 can impress me in the RPG area and get me back into the genre.

Same here, man. I also loved all the stuff you got with that collectors’ box that it all came in. I remember my dad flipping out when he had to pay $70 for it at the time, but when he saw what you got he was super happy. Back in the day $60-$70 for a new game was unheard of, lmao.

More games:

Breath Of Fire Series
Thousand Arms Having to date the girls in the game was a unique touch at the time, which I personally loved, lol
Super Mario RPG
Tales Of Symphonia multiplayer battle option was awesome

Im a JRPG guy myself, and so far i’ve had nothing but letdowns. Truth be told, Enchanted Arms wasnt TERRIBLE, but it wasn’t good either. It was at least a traditional RPG which I liked, but the characters were … excentric to say the least.

Fallout 3 was pretty awesome for a WRPG, but those games normally don’t hold my interest very long. I got to max level once and beat the game, enjoyed the story, and then sold the title.

I desperately want a good old school turn based JRPG. Like old school FF. Hell, make a 7th Saga II or some shit, that game was dope! There’s a few out there but nothing very good as far as I’ve seen. That White Knight Chronicles i THINK is a JRPG and looks dope, and the new FF games should be good (although im not sure if the latest one is turn based or not.)

Blah… so far, RPGs since the SNES days have been a MASSIVE FAIL in my book. They need to make a comeback.

The best turn-based RPG for the 360 that I’ve played was Lost Odyssey.

Yea i’ve heard about that one, but havn’t tried it yet… Maybe i’ll pick it up this weekend. How many hours of playtime?

Ogre battle 64 was amazing, though its price was a little to much for some

Took me about 35 to finish. Definitely worth checking out.

wow 35? isn’t that short? did u not do like any of the sidequests?

Not exactly… Persona is a spinoff of SMT series. It’s just called SMT Persona in N.A. in order to catch the attention of fans of either SMT or Persona to try out the other games. It’s all about consumers and name recognition.

Persona and other SMT games are quite different.

Also, is anyone planning to update the first page with a list of SRK “recommended” RPGs per console? Seems like it would be a good idea, seeing as the same games are being recommended repeatedly.

Well, I certainly fell hard for THAT marketing ploy.

On topic, I remember clocking up a good 200 hours on SOTET…

It’s pretty much average RPG length for me. RPGs usually last me anywhere from 25-45 hours it seems (the longest one I played was Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne which took me 90 hours to finish) I did a couple sidequests, but not a lot. If you’re really neurotic, you can go for achievements such as the one you get for acquiring EVERY bit of treasure in the game.

My list of great rpg’s ive played over the years. In no particular order:
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Legend of Dragoon
Tales of Symphonia
Baten Kaitos (check it out if you havent heard of it)
Dragon Quest 4
Dragon Quest 8
Little Ninja Brothers (old school)
Mario RPG: LoSS
Mario & Luigi: SuperStar Saga
M&L Partners in Time
M&L Bowsers Inside Story
Paper Mario 2
Shining Force 2
Eternal Sonata
Valkyria Chronicels
Earthbound
Mother 3
Fire Emblem Sacred Stones
FE Path of Radiance
Phantasy Star 2 & 4
Phantasy Star Online
Secret of Mana
Final Fanasty all but X-2
Suikoden 1 & 2
Golden Sun
GS The Lost Age
Valkyrie Profile
VP2 Silmeria
Rouge Galaxy
Jade Cacoon
Dark Cloud 1&2
Xenosaga

there was this really cool action rpg on PS1 i cant remember the name thought. I know the main characters name was Ashley.

edit: It was Vagrant Story

Maaannn, I did the same. Still don’t know why but I was obsessed with that game… Item Creation was genius, even if it was mad rigged/annoying/tedious.

Shoutout to Valkyrie Profile, even if it has already been mentioned.

Anyone else think the first page should be updated with SRK’s RPG’s of choice? We’ve been dropping the same games over and over, might as well compile them.

They did make a Seventh Saga 2. I bet you can find fan translations of it floating around. How you actually play it is your decision.
