Roundtable Discussion: Ways in which to expand the SFxT community

Arguably, yeah, SFxTK itself does feel strangely slowed for some reason. Even compared to the original tech demo it seems slower.

You guys think the walk speed is slow huh? Wait two weeks for Dudley. He passively walks as fast as Akuma’s teleport in this game with a 10% speed gem.

Well since they seem to be in here alot. Gems and D Dollars, do you all have any friends who enjoy this game on any level? While you 2 seem to not enjoy it, I can tell you support what the SFxT community wants to do with the game.

well, none of my offline training friends like this game. but online, i have a few that think this game is good in it’s current state.

and it don’t want cross tekken to fail at all. i want to like this game just as much as the next guy, but a lot of dumb things keep it from being enjoyable. and clearly i’m not alone.

Understandable, I hope you get to enjoy the game for yourself, sometime in the future.

I understand the stance – there are things that I dislike about the game as well.

What trips me out is that people said the exact same thing about Marvel, but after actually playing the game most of them fell in love with it as new elements of it appeared from the dust. After dealing with that twice (negative backlash against Vanilla Marvel 3, which I defended against similarly to my efforts with SFxTK, and then backlash against Ultimate which I also defended), I find it weird and unnerving that people refuse to give SFxTK as much of a chance as Marvel got to become a better game.

Frankly, I don’t think the game is so far gone that it can’t be enjoyable, but I definitely know that dwelling on its problems instead of focusing on the good parts of it can ruin the enjoy-ability of the game – I had to work through htat myself as a roadblock to my enjoyment of the game. Either way, i think when the DLC and the patch lands it will help a lot of people start to shift towards enjoying the game more. Even if the system doesn’t change incredibly, 12 characters is a lot of room for growth.

This. Marvel 3, ridiculed to kingdom come by a majority of the old Marvel 2 crew, not even month 1 everyone was talking about dropping the game going back to AE, everyone has a rant video on the game, LMHS MMHS SUPER comments through Vanilla’s whole cycle, glitch showed up on the front page “LOL RUSHED GAME!”, characters on disc “WTF CRAPCOM!”, but people still played it anyway.

About walk speeds in older Capcom games vs now: the big difference is that those older Capcom games didn’t have forward/backward dash.

yea, the FGC is hypocritical for sure. and vanilla mvc3 was pretty bad. but i think ultimate fixed some of the major issues ( lol dhc glitch ) that people had with mvc3. and i feel the same can happen with cross tekken. hopefully this patch breaths life into this game. because atm, cross tekken future isn’t looking very bright.

Marvel is really fun to play and to watch. That has to count for something

(Side note, had the random thought as I noticed the notification that I was quoted… I love discussing things with all of you guys. Just putting that out there.)

It does, it counts for a lot – but that’s the thing. Most of us support SFxTK because its fun. As a matter of fact, a lot of people I know say “SFxTK is really fun, it’s just… [insert random, unexplained thing the game is supposedly not.]” – a lot of people just don’t play it because people don’t play it, I know a lot of folks who think the game’s fun.

Meanwhile, I didn’t find SSF4 fun to watch until I actually learned how it works – so… I still think not giving the game a chance is the problem.

I know that is why I support it! It is quite different from 4, and if you think its like 4 you wont like it.

Outside of the DLC thing, I think the biggest problem is that its called “Street Fighter x Tekken” people had an expectation (that it would basically be SF5) and when that wasn’t met they refused to care anymore.

100% and I admit, when I 1st played it I was like whaaaat is going ON?! Few days later, improved enough to like it, then further to like it even more than 4 eventually.

Any SF game past ST had dashes and the Alpha series had fast as fuck walkspeeds so yeah that excuse is out.

Alpha doesn’t have dashes actually but CvS2 and 3S do and those games still have pretty fast walking. The speed/ground covered by dashes is scaled to the speed of walking, so those games have dashes which are faster and/or cover more ground. If fast walking made dashes irrelevant, nobody would ever bother using dashes in 3S and CvS2, but oh hey they get used all the time because they serve completely different purposes.

Just dropping by because I think this conversation about expanding the community is one that needs to be had, but this thread is getting derailed. Too much talk about the game mechanics and not enough of what the players need to do.

I see a few posts where people aren’t quite sure what they can do themselves to make the community bigger. You don’t have to be great or even good (I’m not!), you just need to be that guy. That guy who goes to every local meet and tournament he can make it to even when there’s only 1 other SFxT entrant or player there. That guy who annoys the hell out of whoever is streaming at your local gathering to put on SFxT until he finally does. Try to organize a small side tournament at a local gathering if enough people are interested. The Capcom 25th Anniversary tournaments coming up are going to be HUGE for the game. If you can make it, show up even if you don’t think you can place. Just talk to everyone that plays the game and let them know about your scene and try to get them to come out and play, or maybe you can make the drive out to where they play. If you can’t get out and travel much, then post up some nice tech you found out in training mode. Heh, apparently that stuff gets on the front page of SRK when AutoMattock’s online tournaments don’t but whatever. Take what you can get.

Pretty much just be the person that sticks out in your area as “that guy who still plays Street Fighter X Tekken”. No one likes to feel isolated in a group, but that’s the only way I see getting more people to play the game. I’ve been to too many cancelled tournaments at my local arcade (SouthTown, which gets tons for SF4, Marvel and KOF still) to ignore the fact that the most of the current “top” players in the FGC just aren’t going to come out and support the game. If you have the resources to run your own tournament, please by all means run it, stream it and post it up. Don’t get discouraged if the turnout isn’t great the first time out, just spread the word to whoever will listen to compete or check out the stream if they can’t make it.

As for what we can do as a group, I guess the easiest thing is just pop in Jibbo’s stream twitch.tv/automattock or join his open lobby sessions on XBL. His XBL gamertag is TrauMattock. Boost the viewer count and start some serious conversations about the game since the chat is slow enough to do so. Also, the next time there’s a major tournament streaming SFxT, post in the chat. I know the chat’s mostly full of trolls, but if there’s enough supporters of the game to drown out the “jab, jab” “oh look, another time out” crap, people skimming it will take notice that there’s actually people that enjoy seeing this game streamed.

Unfortunately, Jibbo will be away from streaming for a month due to work. One way to keep the community growing is if someone who was capable of streaming could continue in his footsteps so the momentum he has started doesn’t die down.

How about we create the only board on SRK where everyone isn’t a massive dick.

I approve of this… but how?!
