Roundtable Discussion: Ways in which to expand the SFxT community

SF III was once hailed “The Black Sheep of SF,” and now it has become so popular that it got an online edition. What is the secret behind that? The answers could be of use for this game.

Because people just kept playing it at tournaments.

That’s going to help keep the offline scene alive so for sure we need to keep going out. But the reality in 2012 is that most offline players are online warriors as well and that to have a strong offline scene you need a strong online community.

OP was also talking about how we can share our knowledge of the game to less skilled/intermediate players who don’t really know how to get better, don’t underestand certain matchups or high level concepts like footsies, frame traps and resets for example. Basically, how we can help level up the overall level of play so that more online players can feel more confortable to make the leap to offline.

MK9 was able to build a strong online and offline community because of players like Tom Brady who constantly shared their knowledge of the game in video/radio podcasts. Every week he would talk about 3-4 specific characters and talk about their strenghts and weaknesses, show some of their best combos, frame traps, other tech and talk about those characters’ best and worst matchups. Then some other tourney players decided to start another podcast to discuss tourney results, interview the winners and talk about high level stuff, current tier lists and matchup charts etc.

Jibbo is currently doing exactly what needs to be done. Only problem is that we need more people to know about his stream and we need to have more players join the SFxT defense force to talk and share knowledge about the game.

Online scene doesn’t matter if people don’t see the game being played at tournaments and events.

They are both equally important, yes.

Personally I think they are both required as they feed off of each other to grow.
-If you don’t have a strong online/offline presence then there is no playerbase to attend tournaments and showcase high level play.
-If there are no tournaments then there is no place to showcase any high level play a large online/offline playerbase can provide.

Regardless I don’t think it really matters which one is more important, surely in an ideal world we want both?

I really think this is the key. Online scene needs less focus; gotta go out and rep the game!

KoFXIII has horrible online, didn’t stop it from having the hypest tournament at EVO2k12.

The game already has a good netcode, and assist gems are getting ubernerfed.

Focus on the offline community and the online will follow.

Hehe, everytime I go to Next Level, nobody’s playing it. :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

We need more “famous” people from the fgc to support the game. I was thinking of contacting the most committed OG’s in the community. James Chen and Ultra David. Those guys seem very passionate about the FGC and the games in it. Def talk to your OG in your scene and just keep playing. Trust me people will show more interest if you come to events and bring your own sfxt set up. Practice. Play the computer go online. Do you. Don’t hinder youself by saying welp nobody is playing i guess i’ll go back to just deal with it fighter 4. I’ve been over seas in thailand all on my lonesome for two months. and i’ve found amazing Lili tech that no other lilis have spoken about. I even found about new tech from someone else about lili resets.
What i think this game needs is personalities. Sorta like wrestling. We need to good guys. The excution monsters. The bad guys such as omg it’s andre and f.champ. We can keep the high skill play but everyone likes to watch said player vs. said player the most if they are flamboyant. Like i seriously thought about going around in a nice suit with sunglasses to these events and throwing out like 20 bucks worth of money to the crowd because I played money inc. People would be like omfg this guy here. It’ll bring more focus on the game. People will start to see hey the game isn’t bad as long as there is a good lure to it.
Also you guys NEED to come out to the 25th anniversary sfxt tournies. That’s the best way to support the game is showing up to its events. That’s how committed people support their game. If you want to see this game succeed think of things to encourage players to play.
IF anyone of you want to learn lili you should def head to our forums. We’ve got a great guide and she’s very underused and very powerful of a character. She has every tool in the book except a command throw. Anyway good luck to you all whatever you’re doing in your scenes.

Not sure why some of you guys are talking about online netcode/scene. I’m talking about the online community. Big difference between the two.

Expanding online and offline community = streams, podcasts, sharing of knowledge, guides, active character forums, gameplay, tier lists, tourney results and tech discussions, match breakdowns/analysis, interviews. Tournament players helping out lower level players. More guys doing what Jibbo is trying to do and more players supporting it.

It’s not a matter of choosing one or the other. We need to do both as both are equally important. That’s what this thread is about.

^ online should be treated as practice always. Always always always. Because you are practicing against a real person. Offline can be both serious play and practice as well. What vulcan is asking the player base of sfxt is grow the game. As in find stuff and show it off. People were so interested in seeing the lili reset vid i thought new lili players were going to come to the forums and ask millions of questions. Stuff like that interest people. ATM THE MASSES THINK WE HAVE NOTHING TO OFFER THEM AND THE GAME IS DEAD. Prove them wrong and show them your stuff. Hell go show you dang friends and get them to play. the entry level into the game is easy. the meta game is something all pro players would love. It’s soo deep.

No one is talking about choosing one or the other. The online scene is important to the online community, because in the end that’s where most people will be playing and applying what they discussed/learned.

The game’s biggest problem right now is the “THIS GAME IS DEAD” mentality most people have. The only way to revert this is to keep supporting the offline scene so people know they can come back and theorycraft, discuss the game and so on because the game is being played in a high level environment. We also need to make sure fiascos like the EVO finals never happen again.

I live in NYC, so I guess I can leave my borough to actually join the scene (I have not found any kind of game scene in Manhattan, maybe the Chinatown Arcade?). I’ve always been worried that the FGC is tight-knit and would not appreciate a scrub walking around taking up people’s time, but if it would support the game, and maybe if I played on not my crap internet connection I could learn to Anti-Air. I guess worst comes to worst I can learn to be a hype man. I get pretty loud for the game sometimes, maybe it could be contagious (or I could look like a doofus).

A tournament stream would indeed be amazing, since there no longer seems to be any of them. I’ll haul my butt to those streams and do my best in the chat to pseudo-commentate and cheer y’all on. Are you going to have boost gems?

I think what I’ll do is hammer out these “Why choose X character guides” and then leave them to be critiqued by others on that forum. Thanks to the edit button they do not have to be perfect, especially in the beginning. I plan on doing King, Paul, and Bob first, since I know the most about them and I do not think anyone here plays them. I’ll expand to more characters but please if you want to do something for your characters let me know.

On the subject of advertising online, since that’s more my forte at the moment. I had the idea to contact Maximillion and tell him about the Defense Force and this movement, but I wonder if he would listen to me. He’s very popular overall in the youtube scene (even his SFxT videos get tens of thousands of views), and he has constantly expressed how he finds the whole storyline surrounding SFxT to be very intriguing, like a soap opera. Well, I reason then he’d be interested in a group of people trying to fight all the negative comments and find the value of the game. I would not be surprised if a direct plug by him to JiBbo’s stream or a tournament stream gained them hundreds more followers. Maybe someone actually knows him here though so they’d be better at contacting him than a random sending something to his youtube inbox?

Podcasts and interviews would be epic as well. One of the ways I got into Tekken6 was listening to this guy’s podcast that every week he brought in a character specialist who talked about their character. Not only did I learn a lot about the game, but it was interesting to put a player’s face/voice with a character, which demonstrates variety, and the various locations of the players showed that Tekken was going strong even in 2012.

I’ve just sended ssf4evo a message if he could include Rawtag blog and JiBbo’s stream links in his SFxT match compilation videos. Hopefully he’ll reply and agrees to do so.

Come to Next Level this Friday in Brooklyn. I’m going to drop by and probably get some games in.

I never saw that channel before, so favorited it. It does remind me though, I could do some superfluous updates to Rawtag (ie just find more videos for the character specific archives).

What time is it open? I’ll actually be in the city on Friday (on vacation now mostly out of state) so I could check the place out in the Afternoon but I’m busy that evening. By arcade do you mean an arcade cabinet you have to pay for play, or are there consoles I can use a pad on? Someone also told me on JiBbo’s stream that there are weekly tournaments somewhere in NYC for SFxT, but I did not get to ask him where and when.
Dang it, if I start playing in the community I’m going to need some epic name.

http://nycnextlevel.com/ big two used to have SFxT on wednesdays.

I’m likely going to be there in the afterwork hours (5PM onward).

They used to have SFxT on stream for the tournament but it was cancelled due to stream monsters.
