RoninWarriors Custom Arcade sticks

whats the stuff you using now Ronin. I re-did my last case just because of that. I’m about to find an alternative to the poly but havent looked around just yet.

So the Polycrylic’s rubbing off even with heavy-ass coats? That’s pretty disappointing.

Blind - I know Ronin said he’s going with a lacquer, but over most latex based paints I’ve had surprisingly good luck with Rustoleum’s Painter’s Touch gloss clear rattle cans. It can appear a little cloudy after an accidental heavy coat, but clears up within a couple hours of drying. With the care you put into your sanding and buffing, I think you could have good luck with it. If you have any AC Moore stores around you, you can usually print out a coupon to get the can for $2.50 - $3.00.

yep after like 4 months of use just the right side and at the top. my hand rest there when I play, there is alot of movement in that spot so thats why it rubbed I guess. I was not happy I flipped the fuck out. I will never listen to that damn Minwax rep ever again. I have a spray gun in the works I have a friend that paints custom cars and he is willing to sell me his old sprayer. the clear, the hardener and I think one other thing Is gonna run me like 300 the sprayer is 400 and a airbrush for 200. then I need to get a aircompressor and I will never ever deal with chips or rubbs again this is by far the best you can get and is just as stong as you cars clear (strong) what I have bin using for now is Dupli-color Perfect match Arylic laquer, It seems to work really good and it is for plasic parts or metal parts on your car so It holds up pretty good and the main thing is I can spray it over top the (sanded with 180 pad) Polycrylic so it sticks and bonds strong. then I put like 3 good coats down to add lots of protection for the other clear underneath. I am sorry If you have use this stuff but I was told that it worked good and they never had any problems with it well I will never use it again.

for those that have used it, Sand it down but not all the way and go get some of that Arylic Laquer lighty spray it first so you don’t eat up the clear it works just dont get to close 8 to 10 inches is good. once you have a light base over the polycrylic then coat it again and a little thicker repeat that twice giving 10 min. between coats(3 to 4 coats). after it cures in a warm dry room for 2days then wet sand it with 2500 till you see smoothness and them rubbing compond and then polish compond may have to do the componds 4 to 5 times just keep doing it till it is super glossy and all scratches are gone and walla you have fixed it.

O Yeah!!! here is Eternal Blazes stick fixed with the Laquer then I sanded and polished it I think it is some pretty good stuff. as you can see Evil Santa is f#%^ing S@(t up!!! but yeah If you want to fix a Polycrylic coated stick this is the stuff you want. I talked shit on it before but I learned how to use it better and I like!!! Dupli-color perfect Match Clear Coat

Thanks for the heads up, Ronin. Nice to know that it’ll go over the polycrylic without issue. That finish is beautiful, by the way. Mind sharing what kind of paint you used?

that red paint is just krylon but when you sand krylon it tends to bleed a little during the clear coats(because you have to sand any thing higher than a satin like semi gloss and gloss) so I have switched to Testors Arylic lacquers or Dupli-color Arylic lacquers. they are better paints but much more expensive. The dormammu stick is painted with testors and Dupli many awesome colors to choose from. make sure when u sand the polycrylic use a 3m tan 180 grit sanding pad the light tan ones that are for finishing so the dupli clear can adhere to it plus stay kind of far away on the first couple light coats then move closer on the 2nd coat don’t want the aerosol to mess up the poly. It works I just showed proof so just take your time and on your like 4th coat make it thick so you see it shine and you should be good.

sanding gloss always makes you sad at first… it looks like shit until the third or fourth coat then it starts to mirror up pretty good. Testors is some expensive paint. A lot of hobby stores near me carry Testors but its twice the cost as just about any other brand. I’m going to try metallic with a new sanding method soon to see how it mirrors up. I’m sure I’ll be dissapointed lol. have you tried to use metallics such as gold and silver ronin?

yes I have used them and they are hard to use meaning if you have any indentations or uneven spots the metallic will refect at a different angle and it will look as if there is a discoloration. so make sure your surface is ultra smooth before you apply the metallic and I like metallic it looks sssssooooooo good under a good clearcoat. real nice and shinny it almost makes the metallic brighter. good luck I think you will like the results just make sure it’s smooth

just updating:

the vampire knight stick:

progress on my old case fixing the rub off. I had to repaint in the places that rubbed off so this is what happened lol. I started going crazy with the paint completly transforming the old design again lol what that like the 5th time this thing has changed lol. Its like my testor case.

and another custom ball top made for Francys Pai (DRAGONFLY PURPLE)

That’s strange. I’ve got a case I used it on about 9 months ago and another that’s been done for 6 months and it still looks fine. I switched to a Deft brush on lacquer for my last 2 projects (no spray gun, and I didn’t want to use the spray can) which worked too. Go figure. I’ll keep my eye on that though, as I have a brand new can of polycrylic that I haven’t opened yet.

I think why it rubbed off is because I rest my hand in that spot and when I hit my kick buttons that?s where my hand rest. with the constant moving around of my hand it rubbed off nowhere else on the case did I have this problem but I didn?t think it would hold up and I play at least once a day with that stick so 4 months was a beating but again when I wet sanded I may off took too much off in that spot as well all I know it the stuff I use now kicks that stuff in the balls lol and I didn?t want people to experience what I did It’s good for things that don’t get handle constantly but not my joysticks

Don?t have a clue where i am going with this but it is turning out cool so far. basically I am trying new things and transparent paint out I think when It is done it will look much better. I am probably doing the art to match the case, stay with the Geometric theme and use different colored buttons for lp,lk and mp,mk and so on should be sweet. sorry Ninja scroll stick but you are no more lol.

ADD:
that stick has bin sanded down lol I have plans for it

Still loving my balltop <333 but ooo your personal project is looking interesting. did you make the vampireknight artwork by the way? Been trying to figure out how to do those button outlines for a while but mine always come out all uneven and messy!

Once I have Evo sorted finance-wise, I’m seriously considering looking at a custom from you.

Paint jobs look amazing Ronin! The practice box looks bomb!

OMG, that Alba Meira stick is just silly… and that paint job is unreal. You are really one of the only people I’ve seen that does work that is on the level of B15. You may have a future customer in me, lol! Keep it up, son.

ALSO: How thick is the actual control panel (not counting the joystick and buttons)? Is it just a piece of plexi or what?

Thanks Uchiha Madara: yeah that meira stick took awhile to make but I learned so much making it that it kinda completed my learning process and now I am ready to light shit up. I used a piece of plexi for the control pannel because it stays flat and strong and does not collect moisture like unprimed wood but I may look into metal plates I have 5 flat plates from work I just have to get them cut and I can test them but it will be easier to interchange joysticks if I use a metal control pannel. and thank you I am honored

chris> thanks man I went a lil crazy with the pink and I had no real direction but I took sum time and made up a plan so It will be sick when done, I am going with Blue, green, pearl and purple I hope I get it done soon cause I like my sticks so much better than a Madcatz lol.

Francys here is your balltop and my dormammu earth ball as you can see it is nicer than the practice ball lol I hate those printers though they take forever. I hope they call me soon!

your painting skills never cease to amaze me! XD

Oh…my…gosh. I’m speechless. That balltop came out flawless!

CI581> I have to find that paint still I wish they made it in the paint I use but I may have Napa mix it for me but from the pictures I have, they are all different shades. there is a color that comes close to your color made by Duplicolor so I will go with that if Napa doesn?t have that color on file. times have bin real rough for me as of late, just got laid off and money has bin tight so I do apologize for the long wait but I never forgot about you and I will get it done bro just need that color is all, and thanks man.

FP yeah it looks real nice in person you will love it.

Hi peoples,

Here is my Dormammu custom I made for myself, I have bin working on it here and there for a good while now but I am soooo happy it is done and now this will be my main stick. I wanted to finish it before orders got to much and I wouldn?t have time to get it done in time for MVC3 but I got it done and I am real happy with the results. In some of the pictures where the light panel on the ceiling is reflecting on the finish it is making it look rippled but this is just the texture of the light cover. the finish is super smooth. I was gone wait till the sun came up but I couldn?t wait to post it. the sun would of pulled out more color in the case. I painted the adapter red just to add something different and also use 3 different buttons to make the home, start, select buttons, Purple-red-blue- just like the case, they match perfect :) I used a cut out method for the ball top if i would of hand painted it, it would of bin more accurate but I think it is pretty close. I am going to hook up a Led widget for the buttons I would like to have them go yellow-orange-red-purple. lp;lk-yellow and so one. that will be the icing on the cake i think! but I have to start on Jeff's case, so LED's will have to wait till these next two jobs are done I have going on. sorry for all the pictures but I wanted a close up of all the little details!!! thanks, hope you guys like!!!
