Rolento General Discussion

You are too slow, you have to input it faster.

he is not too slow, It’s a known glitch that you can’t do a reversal super with rolento

Had theory on super being similar to claw’s in that if it gets interrupted during startup it will not consume meter… but then i watched the above video again and… ugh.

I swear I feel like they messed with time with linking S.HK > C. MK. Now mind you I havent messed heavily with rolento in a couple weeks but i am not linking this shit at all and i was able to do it all the time. But for some reason i can much easily link S.LP to C.MK. Did they fuck with his shit again? God. Why the hell do they have to make all his shit 2 frame links. Its annoying as hell man.

EDIT: Oh, didnt know his stuff doesn’t work on a few characters… greeeeat. This guy is just to hard to use.

Unless I missed something after the recent patch, s. RH - cr. mk is very easily to combo. Just time it slightly earlier than you would. I practically never drop it and my execution is decent at best.

Remember, if your attention is divided when practicing in general, you’ll take more time to solidify your links/combos.

I’m learning a ton of new characters simultaneously, and that means I have to take extra time to get my muscle memory down for each character’s links/combos. It’s a natural occurrence, so remember to factor that in while you’re learning Rolo.

Honestly I think people should only get to complain about 1 framer BnB combos that go into a highly punishable-if-missed special and are hard to FADC to safety should you miss the link (see Guile’s c.lp > c.mp xx Flash kick in the previous version). 2 framer is fine.

On the note of combos, I think it’s great that even if an opponent is crouching that all of Rolento’s BnB essentials still hit. His Rekka, s.HK, s.LP, it all connects. No force stand here to make sure a damaging combo can go through

I agree though I think there are a few exceptions here and there for s.lp connecting on crouchers. I think it’s iffy on a few like Blanka and Elena… I know jump-in followed by st.lp on a crouching rose can whiff too…

So, does Rolento have any weaknesses at all? It is starting to feel like he is easily the best new character. Damage, mobility, mix ups, range, two incredible ultras, great normals, Anti-focus with a multitude of multi-hit moves, and 1000 HP.

At least he is a low stun character like Bison, but it feels unsurmountable to get good situations against him - since he is always getting hit out of the air, I can’t connect him into any big hit confirms. To make this sound like a less obvious sodium post I’m going to pop a question ; Rolento players, where do you feel like your character is at his weakest? Specifically I’d like to know more about him versus Vega, and what are my specific ( if any ) options against Rolento.

On paper, he seems like he’s a god because he can fight at any range, has power, mobility, and speed, his normals all have high priority and range, and his health isn’t low. In practice however, his biggest weakness is his lack of a way to counter pressure. His anti-air is not great, especially up close, and he doesn’t have a quick move for punishment. His mobility moves can be countered by an opponent who anticipates them, especially if he’s in the corner.

Face a good mix-up or pressure character and you’ll see what Rolento’s main weaknesses are. He’s the 2nd worst new character after Hugo, I’d say he’s in the lower-half of the mid-tier. His weaknesses are: weak to pressure, awful wake-up options, some pokes not as good as they appear, and some general stuff like his delta escape being somewhat useless.

He’s solid when he works, problem is that you’re in big trouble the moment your opponent gets in. You have to be exceptionally good at tech’ing and reading mix-ups to succeed with this character, which sadly I need work on. My footsies and AA’ing have always been good, its just really hard to keep my opponent off a full round. Once the barrier is broken I’m forced to mash tech and hope I succeed, lol.

Hope they buff him soon!!! Just give me his old st. mp back and some invincibility on ex rekka.

After having invested a lot of time into this character, he has easily become my favourite to play. He’s very tricky, and suits the frenetic pace with which I like to play fighting games. He can be very active from a lot of ranges, but a lot of his activity is really just smoke and mirrors (kind of like C. Viper), and patient, knowledgeable players won’t be thrown off by hopping all over the place.

He is most threatening when just inside c.lp range. From that specific range, I think he has advantage over almost every character in the game, since very few characters have 4 frame normals that can compete at that distance. Rolento’s slow walk speed makes it hard to maintain that range, though.

Overall, I think he’s a very fun character, but he has quite a few large (and at the highest echelons of competitive play, even insurmountable) weaknesses that relegate him to the lower mid tiers on a good day. He is good at what he does well, but there are plenty of other characters with similar strengths who do not suffer from the same crippling limitations.

Rolento seems strong when he has offensive momentum but if you take that away from him he quickly disintegrates into a pile of defenseless poopoo.

Rolento weaknesses:

  1. Reversal/Wake-up options are limited to Ultra & Ex Air Escape
  2. Stinger has similar properties of Ibuki’s Kunai (can be neutralized by normals/reversals)
  3. AA is restricted to s.MP, close.HP, Super
  4. Ultra 2 combo ability is restricted to Stinger & Air Raid
  5. cr.MK xx Rekka isn’t a true block string (can be mashed out of)
  6. Ex PC -> Followup is character/timing specific
  7. Rekkas all do same damage/stun
  8. All rolls are punishable (-8 on block, Ex -10 on block), in addition, people now use cr.MP/MK to counter for a free combo on predictive rolls
  9. j.HP hitbox is deceptive compared to the animation
  10. Air Escape still glitches on an invisible wall (rare)

These are just a few items that people picking up Rolento should be constantly aware of when gaming.

I’ve been playing Rolento for a while and I’ve been wondering if it’s actually possible to get that crossup EX Air Raid after a reset in the corner. I’ve seen a few youtube vids but I honestly couldn’t get it once lol.

EX PC > s.MP/s.HP xx EX Roll backwards into that overhead thing.

Haven’t played in about a month, but from what I remember there are specifics you have to take into account when going for the corssup Air Raid in the corner.

First, it depends on what normal you reset them with. Some characters need to be reset with cl.hp for example, while others need to be hit by st.lk etc.

It depends on how the opponent is blocking as well. Some setups only work on neutral (useless), while some only work against standing opponents holding back/forward or crouching opponents.

Again, certain situations call for a different version of the move to be used. Sometimes EX Air Raid can be used for the crossup, while other times it will only work for a specific version of Air Raid (LP Roll xx HP Air Raid, HP Roll xx LP Air Raid etc.).

Lastly, you may just be simply timing it wrong. Some characters require you to slightly delay the time between the roll and the Air Raid.

If I were you, I would just go into training mode and test out all the possible combinations on every character, then make a list so you don’t forget. Yeah it will probably take a lot of time, but then at least it will eventually become general matchup knowledge.

Well if I had at least 1 working setup then I could start working with it. I don’t know what to look out for and no matter what I do I can’t get it to work against Ryu no matter what combination I use.

I will provide a list tho if I ever figure out how to do that shit.

Ok wondering about the rules for his qcb + kk ive done it a few times and not only has it not come out ive not been charges for the meter but my opponents getting a counterhit. wondering if it might be similar to the super issue. Also even after my opponent has landed on the other side of me im getting dp kicks coming out at weird times.

also beginning to question teching with him i can be mashing tech and still get thrown now and again. Think im slowley going mad but i never had these issues with chun since vanilla
