To add to that I think abel is a bad match-up. No answer to his pressure at all. He’s free to command throw and roll left and right. Very tough in the corner too.
Focus Tech backdash is your friend when you have less than two bars. His s.mp as antiair needs slight improvement to be more reliable. Normal landing frames on pogo would be cake.
I was messing around and found a cross up air raid reset against Yun. In the corner, EX Patriot, cl.Hp/c.Lp xx Air Raid. H Air Raid will cross up, L Air Raid won’t. I haven’t had a chance to test it against any other characters.
Abel is actually probably his worst matchup. I find Akuma to be even or even slightly in Rolento’s favor, especially with U2. It completely shuts down his game, and it punishes teleports easily. Reacting to demon flip with j.lp is really easy as well.
I feel Bison (dictator) is a bad matchup though. Granted I am horrible at the matchup anyway, but it’s almost impossible to break his defense, and when you do, have fun preventing him from escaping.
Cammy and Sakura are both horrible matchups as well. Rolento pretty much loses to any character that ones to get in except for maybe Fuerte, T.Hawk and Zangief.
Abel is definitely not his worst match-up. It’s uncomfortable if Abel gets in, and good Abel players can easily punish all his escape options either on reaction, or with OS - but Abel does not have any safe ways of maintaining pressure, which is Rolento’s weak spot. Abel can knock you down and mix you up, but if you defend the mix-up (block the attack or nj/back-das/backflip the TT), Abel is pushed back out into a range where Rolento will outshine him, and will need to predict well to get back in again.
Rolento loses (IMO) to characters who can zone him effectively/out-poke him/do not need to approach (Guile/Chun), and characters who can apply continuous, safe corner pressure while easily punishing escape attempts (Yun/Rufus/Cammy).
I have not found Abel especially difficult - this match-up tends to favour whoever can get momentum first, and both characters are very weak on wakeup. I have not, however, played any world class Abels - only the ones I have met on Live.
With dictator you can punish exPC with sweep if you don’t have ultra. Same for devils reverse or s.mp for AA or c.mk to make it whiff if they come down on top of you.
S.hk is a pretty good anti air for his jump arc, but if he jumps from closer in, consider using instant jumpback mp as s.mp can get beat by his j.hp aimed at your head.
f+mk is a very good tool against him crouch teching and remember you’re +2 on hit so follow up with a c.lp then another f.mk or jump instant pogo (the sooner you press down and mk the less time you’re in the air) to jump in hk to get back in their face.
So EX Delta Attack (roll forward) doesn’t have projectile invincibility like the rest. Keep this in mind. It screwed me due to my oversight in reading the frame data. Ugh.
Has anybody made any headway on defense rolento footsies/zoning? I can’t figure this shit out as all his moves are slow as fuck. Also, what the F is going on with his AA? standing strong sucks compared to his other games and is very unreliable from certain distances/certain chars. I’m about to give up on this dude after only a week.
I think you need to adjust your mentality when playing him. He isn’t like say… Guile, where you can stand in one spot and defend against every possible approach with the correct button. You’re either in your opponents face pressuring with st.lp, further out whiff punishing with his st.hp, or way out throwing knives and moving all over the place so you can surprise attack with rolls or empty rolls into their face. If they jump, you can also jump with an instant normal to air-to-air them. If you have Super, it’s a pretty damn good AA and punishes poor crossup attempts on your wakeup. When people are in your face pressuring you, you really have block patiently and look for a spot to check them with a jab or flip out to resume hit-and-run.
I think capcom needs to adjust this pice of shit charcter becase hes is so trash its unbelievable.I’ve been playing him some more and just OMG.
Call me crazy but maybe because combofiend was known as a big rolento guy back in the day I have the feeling he was super afraid that if rolento is a tad too strong people will start blaming him and giving him shit he did it because he likes rolento.
So he overcompensated big time and nerfed him in to the gound for no real reason.
Eh, maybe I’m full of shit but seriously… why did you make this character so fucking bad. Please do tell capcom.
Also, I still don’t have a feel for how/when to use Rolento’s roll. Is it used as a poke? To close the distance or a mixup (empty roll throw) or something? I see people spam it in match videos but it just kinda looks/feels like a scrub move. I just try to play cvs2 style rolento and I just get straight up raped to rush down and i eat a lot of jumpins from certain chars (Cody for example).
edit: It seems Rolento is much better in cvs2 because hes a lot faster and his normals don’t trade/lose that much (big example, his AA s.strong).
If you want to win with Rolento you have to remove that mindset right now. From specific ranges medium Delta Attack is difficult to punish and from other ranges it will whiff. Use this to harass your opponents. Condition them to block it then whiff it at specific ranges to throw them. Then start faking with the light version if they try to punish you. You can’t play CVS2 style Rolento in SF4’s engine.
