Rocket League: The Official Thread

in 2v2 we have two players on a team.

player A goes into the corner, a VERY common occurence in any gameplay of this game. Player B is now playing somewhat back (half court more than likely, possibly a bit behind that though. Player A sets up a centre attempt, he now is FORCED to go back. Sure, he can hit a goalie, or keep an eye for a rebound, but both of those are WAY too dangerous to do in a 2v2 setup. If Player B misses his shot, or boosts past the ball (yet again, very common), he is now out of position, and possibly Player A too. As a sports player, I don’t like that scenario.

Now in 3v3, you aren’t as pressured. With a good 3v3 team (I admit a shitty 3rd player is bad, but as you rank up out of pro/semi pro you see this waaaaaay less, EXCEPT IN NON RANKED I FUCKING HATE NON RANKED IN THIS GAME) you don’t have that panic of missing a shot = wide open net for the entire length of the field. You’re free to go refill boost, or smash the goalie, or swap back to mid point or goalie, or go for a rebound or hell even attempt a shot/rebound on your own centre. I know you technically can still do those in 2v2, but it’s not even remotely safe, and thus a huge portion of the game is me watching balls roll in from the other teams zone, or guys getting breakaways for 20 miles because somebody missed a rocket boost. NOT FUN.

I like setting up good passes. 99.99999999% of the time I’d rather set up a pass to somebody else. I only shoot when I feel I have to, I’m usually lurking for a reason like that. Watch replays of me scoring, and it’s a loose ball out in front, I’m mid court, and I just rocket boost in and pray. If I hit it, it’s usually a goal, if I miss, I boost my ass back to goalie ASAP. Gotta learn to sit at mid court, and just NOT go for the ball, but learn to anticipate. If you see me going into a corner with a ball or after a ball, anticipate/guess whether or not I will get to it first…if I do, take a look at the net and judge whether or not you can rocket boost into the ball. If you’re RIGHT in front of the net, you have less time, speed, and angles, to have a proper chance. If you back up a bit (like a defenceman in hockey who pinches in), and hover around half court, you’ve got one hell of a good chance to just get a goal. Hell, u see me go in a corner with the ball, just rocket boost up, then make adjustments as you see fit. I’ll find you, I promise.

That’s kinda why I like dumbass third team mates. They usually go in the corners all on their own, and do all the hard work, getting the ball loose and tying up a man or two. It’s only the other dumb shit that infuriates me, like when they abandon net or follow YOU into the corners (yes, two players in the same opposing corner is a big pet peeve of mine, but it’s a death sentence in hockey, just like it is here).

How many times have you seen me pass to a winger (or whatever you wanna call it) instead of going to corner for a header? You really can’t do that well in 2v2. You can’t afford to have to players both equally as deep in the opponents end. In 2v2 if I pass laterally instead of end to end, chances are the opponent is gonna get the ball instead.

I feel like you’re over stating the risk of taking a shot/pass from the corner. change of possession, probably, but it’s not always a break away like you’re saying.

Plus I a lot have more fun hustling to get back on defense than watching a goalie dump the ball out.

e: also… I play midfield too. If a teammate looks like he is in control of the ball I let him do his thing until he passes, misses or has the ball taken.

I think randomly jumping and rocketing to predict a pass is a really bad play.

In 2v2 it’s a pretty scary risk. I seldom shoot from the corner, a good goalie isn’t allowing that shit. I’ve played with a handful of Master and Expert ranks before, the shit i learned o.0
Go watch a Legend or Rocketeer match.

But generally, when you play from the corner, you only have a few options depending on actual physical game limitations like speed and obstacles and all that jazz. Playing 2v2 limits those options, because your only other teammates decision forces your next move. It takes away from the freedom to safely explore options, and HAVE options. If your teammate decides to come in for a rocket boost shot, you’re either taking out a goalie (RISK), somehow setting up for a rebound/mistake/whatever (RISK + potentially difficult), or logically being forced to go back to at least the middle area of the arena to potentially defend or whatever. If their goalie makes a good clear, you’re probably not getting back to your net in time.

I don’t follow you on this one…explain

I really wanna stress I ain’t really talking about you when I talk about this. I’m in FAQ mode when I talk about this game lol. I take it far too fucking serious. You’re a great player, I think my only criticisms are your following quoted comment, and similarly I’ve seen you sit and wait for balls to land (lol) when you have those situations where the ball is going to have a huge bounce off the walls or ground or whatever, instead of rocketing up (seriously, if you miss i could care less but I reserve the right to laugh my ass off… it’s low level shit we all gotta learn cuz the higher levels it’s ALL they do). Burn your meter, meter isn’t to be used while you drive except in rare cases. It’s to fucking rocket boost. And you hide in the net a little…but everybody kinda does that. That little hesitation to go for the ball, lest you give up your current position (I played goalie in hockey, and still play it religiously in NHL Be A Pro mode). But that’s kinda shit you expect of everybody to be honest. I do it myself. I’m like half drunk, and I spend so much time judging where I think a ball will land and how to approach it, that I forget to actually deal with it in time.

nope nope nope nope. Randomly doing it? Fuck yeah. Seriously count how often I do it, and it ain’t that often, and I wish it could be more often. But you gotta learn. Learn the physics of how to get your car up, as well as control it once you are up. My biggest thing now is learning how to rocket off walls from up high. I jump and get disoriented and just end up failing lol. But you’re out of sight of the opponents so you have more of an opportunity to be zany. One of my favourite things as you’ve seen is drive up the wall with a ball and just launching it out in front, but I need to work on a followup when i still have good amounts of boost left.

but you SHOULD be anticipating where your teammate is going to play the ball in the corner. Like if I’m driving into the corner, I’m setting up the ball in front of the goal and in the front 1/3 of the arena, every time, barring random mistakes or going to fast etc. So you know a general area the ball will go to, so as you see me (or your logical teammate) driving into a corner to setup a corner (I dont use those emote buttons to announce that shit, its pointless and wastes valuable time dealing with your actual fucking controlling of a rocket car, I only use it for taunting lol and celebrating), you should be getting airborne or at least in the vicinity of where the ball will go, then control/steer yourself in the air. Look at highlight goals and how dudes angle their cars for the ball to bounce off properly. If you miss, it still looks awesome, and it’s honestly understandable given how some games can be a little laggier than others (btw the number of people dont matter in this scenario, you should learn to stop searching for games in Europe, stick to North and sometimes South America, those third world fucks lag you down). In general, I’d love to lose a game where my teammate is at least attempting crazy shit like driving up a wall, jumping off, and rocketing a high bouncing ball at least TOWARDS the other net. Weird zany shit like that is how you score goals.

Also you’re also missing the biggest part of Rocket League, which you won’t see much until later difficulties. Getting taken out. Getting taken out in a 2v2 is a fucking death sentence. You go boom, or still possible, both of you go boom, you’re fucked. Harder to take out all three in 3v3, and also one guy getting taken out isn’t as bad a thing. One of the things I’ll try to do is look for guys who refill meter, then try to take them out. A TON AND I MEAN A TON of goalies I see will run out and get full boost, then head back to net…kk cool, I’ll leave the play and rocket boost into them to take em out, and now they gotta waste time getting back into play (technically Im out of play too though), and likely refill meter. Also, they have me on their mind, now. I refer to hockey a lot in my discussions of this game, because of the contact nature, and as well as the incredible similarities to EA NHL games online Be A Pro mode, which invented this shit (and was 6v6 with a DEDICATED goalie). I assume people who played a lot of football would understand this knowledge as well. If you’re allowed to hit people in a sport, you REALLY gotta consider that when playing.

ps - u down for some games today?

I disagree about missing the ball being NBD. If you jet up to hit the ball you’re taking yourself so far away from the play and giving the opponent free range behind you. Though I think there are times when I don’t go up for the ball ill give you that.

You can 100% beat the offense back to your goal if you hustle, boost for acceleration then 2 flips. they are going to be focusing on the ball and not wanting to just drill it down field, or if they do that you can take the ball.

I have almost twice as many hours, same with wins, as you and spent a good bit of time in Silver I. I know how to play lol.

If you have proper backup (mid guy should be rocketing, not goalie, his job is to stop random escape balls and to get the ball back in if it comes back to mid arena, occasionally he goes for goals too if the situation presents itself), you should be rocketing every time. And not missing lol. Even if you miss, it usually forces opponents to play as though you will connect. And when you connect, it the success rate is tremendously high. Also it scares plebs who can’t rocket boost yet. They think you’re super pro.

edit: like sometimes I agree you should NOT go up, but if so, you best have a good plan to either block the ball or prevent other dudes from getting to it or clearing it. Just blindly waiting for a ball to land is rookie shit.

I’m talking about more about the random nonsense that arises more often in 2v2. Also, you should be backflipping back. Seriously, backflip all the time. It’s faster than turning around and keeps the option to boost forward for rebounds or shots or shooting it back in their end. Sometimes just putting it back in their end is more valuable than a random shot on net.

pfft means nothing, silver and pro/semipro/vets is meaningless. I play mostly with friends who are much higher ranked than I am that convinced me to get the game. I just don’t play on Steam as often mainly because I hate playing without anybody I know, and also because my friends are rarely available lol. Can’t WAIT for the Playstation connectivity to come out tho (I play a ton on PS4 with buddies at their place).

prove it

lol

PS - get your ass online, lets do some ranked. Maybe one of the other PC homo’s can hop in.

eating then ill be on

message me, im incredibly drunk lol

edit - ps - Crazy Canadian Election, dunno how long I can play, or pay attention lol

waaaaay too drunk and celebrating to play, sorry lol

gonna try to be on a bit more, tried to play a few the other day. Was never really good enough to be “rusty” though lol

i finally got decent and my pc dies on me fml. now i gotta have my buddy play and unlock the halloween items for me.

just got bodied in ranked by an all jamaican team, I could hear thier mics in thier language and “BUMBACLOT” everytime they missed a pass

We played a guy yesterday would would type something really stupid and then repeat that really stupid thing over the mic.

what time u guys down for some games today?

Fuck pc

And yeah you need a really selfless teammate to play goalie and accept he probably wont get higher than 150-200 points a game

I don’t mind playing goal at all but if I see a chance for a breakaway:

a) I’m taking it
and
b) one of my teammates needs to drop back into the net for like 15 seconds while I make my run then I’ll come back.

It’s funny the guy I play with and myself have almost identical stats in goals/assists/mvps/wins but I have like 200 more saves. Seriously we are within 16, he’s up that in wins, of each other in everything, and most things are within 4. It’s kinda crazy.

e: I’ll probably be on around 8-8:30.

When I spawn by the goal, I just drive around in a circle collecting boost. If the ball starts down my way down the middle, I make a move. A lot of my replay goals start from the opposite end of the field. Plus, I probably appear to be just fucking off, which is a boon.

I’ve seen too many faceoff goals to do that. Unless you mean after the ball has been played then go do that. Even still I normally sit on the fuel spot closest to the goal for a couple refills then move to the next nearest. It probably is helpful to look like you’re screwing around though.

It depends on my positioning… if I’m retreating the ball is usually going down the side and depending on me, the ball, my teammates and opponents I’ll either handbreak to the goal line facing the ball or intercept the ball in the corner and counter. It also depends if I’m in front of or behind the ball, obviously I won’t turn around to retreat…

As far as knocking the ball while on the retreat I can reverse and backflip or do a neutral jump bicycle kick effectively enough to knock it back to their zone.

Yeah depends on positioning on everything. Sometimes I want to boost into flip for super sonic break point, grab some nodes along the way and power slide into position.

If I got plenty of time and its a short distance away then 1-2x backflips is fine.

GGs last night. I’m too stupid to keep track of records but I think we did iight, right?
