I’d never compare CoG and TdE. Different themes (youth growing up around gangs vs law enforcement’s black-and-white response to gangs) in the same setting. And I’m not advocating that anyone touches RoboCop. Keep that shit in 1987, there was nothing wrong with it.

I saw the trailer a few days ago, out of fascination more than anything i’ve not watched a new movie since the original avp, and being a massive robocop fan.
Before i watched it i said to the missus “bet he dont get shot up like in the original” and lo and behold, i remember i was 9 years old and already seen loads of pretty violent films but being 9 years old i laughed it off it was funny slapstick whatever, but when i saw murphy get blasted like he did, i was pretty shocked and it really made me think there’s some really bad people out there
That wasn’t even my main beef, new robocop is far too human, just looked and acted like a guy in a suit.
I loved peters performance in the originals, this guy was just too human for me
sorry for the late to the convo comment, but in regards to the whole recent movie rating versus older/80’s movie ratings; specifically, the new pg-13 is not even in the same league as 80’s R rating.
example: conan the destroyer was rated friggin PG, think about that. not even pg-13 and yes they had implemented/created the “-13” rating a year prior to movie release. then we have other flicks such as “just one of the guys” with a pg-13 rating and that movie had glorious rack exposure, plus the little brother’s collection of naked broads on his walls. sixteen candles was another one of the “pg but today would be r” movies, nudity and minors drinking & smoking? the naked gun movies all had intros with some boob meat exposure and they weren’t R.
i’m sure the list goes on, but as it’s not even 8am and i still feel hungover from saturday night i’m going to just end it here.
edit: btw on topic of great 80’s robocop commercials, i wish i could go back in time and buy all of the robocop outfits they created.
The rating system now i find a bit weird
I just remember U being for everybody, PG being parental guidance stuff like the goonies, who framed roger rabbit, 15 i think one of the conans was a 15, even stuff like the breakfast club, then 18 stuff like robocop cobra commando pretty much every horror
wasn’t till the first batman film i think in 88 or 89 they introduced the 12 certificate, which i now think is obsolete
Now here in the uk pretty much 90% of hollywood films are 15, only ridiculous stuff like saw or hostal get an 18 certificate now, i dont get why cannot be a happy medium.
i miss having violence in films without it being some torture porn fans wet dream

street fighter 2 turbo was the first street fighter I owned, did you get the limited edition tin? I loved that game.

Conan was a hard R man. It was originally rated X for violence as John Milius and Oliver Stone packed it full of fucked up shit. James Earl Jones feeds Arnold’s dad to armored rottweilers in the opening scene. Conan brutally beats people to death in a gladiatorial arena. Conan gets crucified and a crow tries to peck his eye out but he bites it’s fuck head off like he’s Ozzy Osbourne and later you see his Asian sidekick eating that same dead bird after he comes to cut Conan down. Conan sneaks into the back of James Earl Jones’s base and sees THERE IS A FUCKING CANNIBAL ORGY WITH BODIES BEING STRUNG UP LIKE MEAT, HACKED APART, AND TOSSED INTO A GIANT VAT OF SOUP so he goes nuts and murders fucking everyone onscreen. It takes Arnold multiple sword strokes to hack Darth Vader’s head off with blood spurts at the end. All Milius did was trim some frames off of some scenes to get rid of a few of his more gratuitous original samurai movie level blood spurts, kept all the fucked up shit, and the new rating group just gave him an R.
The commentary for Conan with Arnold and Milius is hilarious too. Check it out. Definitely up there with the Total Recall one.
I’d argue Robocop was a perfect movie; perfect being about as good as humans can make.
So there’s just no way this movie can live up to that.
Knowing that, if I see this movie, I am going in with low expectations.
I could be surprised, but I really don’t expect that to happen.
Robocop, and many other movies, need no remake. It was perfect how it was.
Would you redo The Stigmata of St. Francis of Assisi? Would you redo the Statue of Liberty and make her more modern? Would you redesign Central Park because you think you need to give it a more contemporary feel? No, you wouldn’t. Movies are art, too, and should be treated with the same respect. Remaking them just devalues the originals.
actually remakes highlight a lot of overlooked details in the original making viewers appreciate how good the original was and serves as a good excersize for the current generation.
Yeah, no. There’s no remake that’s better than the original save for maybe Batman and even that one is highly contested.
