Woot, got the RJ45 keystone to read on my computer, i’m in business now, the pin out on the keystone was wrong, but i got it to work, now to make the other cables. sweet, now i need to figure out how to dual pcb it with a madcatz retro stick and i’ll be all done
Isn’t it easier to just use a DB-9? Less of that crimping hassle and dealing with the tininess of RJ45. Great work, though, just wouldn’t want to get into it myself.
Alright, got my Cthulhu in today, and soldered up the cat5 from it to the keystone, and it seems to work great. I also routed the USB data cables through my DPDT switch and was able to successfully connect/disconnect the Cthulhu from my PC by flipping the switch. Now my question is this:
With a dual PCB (in this case, Cthulhu and Madcatz 360) setup, I would only need the one power source, right? So I could leave the cables used for 5v and Ground on USB alone, and the 360 PCB would be powered as well anytime the Cthulhu is plugged in? In other words, the 360 PCB would be receiving power from the Cthulhu itself and thus, I could simply switch between USB data lines through the DPDT switch without worrying about power, since the power is still going to the Cthulhu through the RJ45.
yes, this is how i did mine, just like you posted earlier, i even tested it out, as long as you have the pcb for the madcatz connected to the MC Cthulhu, you only need the one power line connected through the usb. Only the D+ and D- run through the switch.
when the Cthulhu board is running the 360 pcb doesn’t get power because the led’s never lit up for me in Cthulhu mode, until i flipped the switched then the led’s lit up, works great.
great thread! if only my rep would count (heard i need 500 posts before it counts) but got a wire diagram for a dreamcast controller or a way to tell what wire does what on it?
The Cthulhu can’t do Dreamcast (yet). It does work with PS1/2-DC adapters though.
uhhh… where do you buy those Neutrik connectors? I dont see a shop on their website.
Im sorry, I should have been more specific. Im looking for the one pictured here
Not the RJ45 one but the USB one. I just want to make a removable usb cord so I can store it in my case. And Ive seen on the Neutrik site they have a USB A male -> USB A female one which I think would work best because I can find a usb cord like that just about anywhere. But I can settle for the same one thats in that TE pictured. I see USB A to USB B cords at WalMart so they are pretty common. I guess what Im really looking for is a port with USB A female ends on both sides. Anyone seen something like that?
EDIT: Bah, wait I found them after searching on that site a bit more. Thanks. But still looking for a female/female USB A connector if anyone could help.
i guess this guide is not applicable to Cthulhu PC/PS3 board since it requires more than 8 wires
Incorrect my friend, if you read the 1st post this guide will work with any joystick that you want to make a removable cord for, the guide is designed around the MC Cthulhu because nobody wants multiple cords coming out of the joystick box.
You can apply this to a PS3/PC Cthulhu if you wanted to, you just don’t need the extra wires like MC Cthulhu, you would just wires the pins that you need to the RJ45 Keystone and leave the other ones empty. you only need the Ground, VCC, D+ & D- line for a PC/PS3 Cthulhu to work, so you would only wire pins 1, 5, 6, & 8 on the keystone, or maybe you could use just a regular telephone jack? it only has 4 connections, i’m not too sure about the telephone jack so if anybody else thinks it’s a bad idea correct me, but i know you don’t have to use all the pins on the keystone, only the ones that apply to that console.
oh i might have misunderstood the first post:sweat:
Damn I never think properly…I always thought the 20 pins socket output to rj45 lol…
One question, is it possible to mod usb type B cable to output rj45?
Maybe this thread can help?
http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=193611
It shows the pinouts for the USB B so maybe you can take that and just apply it to the RJ45?
woops, what i mean is from USB type B female from Cthulhu PC/PS3 board to rj45…sorry for the confusion:lovin:
need a pic or drawing to better understand you, but i think you want to take the female end of usb B off and wire it to go to a rj45 keystone or jack, if you want to use the keystone then just wire the ground, vcc, d+, and d- from the end of the cord (most usb’s only have 4 wires, black, red, green and white. if you want to mod the wire to go to a jack then just cut off the end and place them in the jack as the 1st post states and crimp them down.
Neutrik only has USB A female to B female. Why would you want an A female to A female port? Most computer peripherals use B male to A male cables anyway.
- connect the USB A male cable from your pcb to the NAUSB A female.
http://www.fullcompass.com/product/297602.html - then use a regular USB B male to A male cable; connect the USB B male end to the NAUSB B female and USB A male end to your console

Just thought I’d post of pic of my stick with the rj45 jack installed:

Thought I’d provide a nice laugh. Obviously it’s just a prototype, wanted to make sure the Cthulhu and everything worked fine before I got my wood case (which should arrive Tuesday). But this was too awesome/hilarious not to post. Though I have changed the screws to ones that fasten and point downward since taking the pic (for obvious reasons).
Thanks, I got it
Great information!!!
I came to know about how to use RJ45 keystone jack…
Thanks for your information!!!
If I was just interested in using the MC with a gamecube and ps3 could I wire the GC cord to usb instead of rj45 seeing you said we only need three wires (plug the usb into a neutrik adapter and then from there soldered to the board)?
Also I take it that it is mandatory to solder the wires to the board for GC compatibility? You couldn’t just go GC controller > usb neutrik adapter > usb-b plug on the MC right?
