i dont consider it mainstream ya know, i never have even when popular. self published stuff distributed through a major i dont consider a mainstream comic…just my personal belief.
I agree with maxx, for the most part TMNT was popular as a comic but became icons with the original show, which hardly anything like the comic. The recent 2k3 show is probably the closest thing to the comic but even then, it wasn’t an exact copy and it took its own liberties.

To be fair they said from the start that was the plan- first DVDs with a few episodes on them, and then full season DVDs later.
If my sources are correct, they’ll start airing season two really soon. And by “soon,” I mean Jan. 11. And by “sources,” I mean Wikipedia.
