I may get a little heat for this… And i like SoulCalibur 4 and all, but God, watching the game being played at Evo reminded me why Virtua Fighter 5 would had been a much better choice in the 3d games. So sad so little people play it, and to be honest it’s even incomprehensible for me on why a competitive player wouldn’t even try it.
On a final notice, i’m new here so i hope i’m not opening a can of worms by talking about VF5 in a SoulCalibur thread, sorry if i do.
This is my point, where people are taking this “playing to win” concept to the next level by just accepting why/how hilde is played. Her design is ridiculous in competitive play, I doubt she was ever designed to be used that way competitively.
The Hilde horse has been pretty much beaten to death time and time again, but I was just thinking from the perspective of how bad and embarrassing the game actually LOOKS when there’s a GOOD player using Hilde. I was actually rooting for non-hilde players at evo simply because I could at least watch more interesting fights, the random stage selects and their outcomes non-withstanding. KDZ could have decided to use Hilde, and he knows there’s real advantages to using Hilde. He might have even placed higher up. The fact there’s people out there outplaying (sometimes severely since 1 launcher = death) Hilde doesn’t mean Hilde isn’t a stupid character.
Meh I just wanted to give my 2 cents, fuck this game but I’ll still be rooting for omega. lol
Well, SC4 Nationals just concluded yesterday…and once again, Ceirnian placed 4th and RTD 5th. KDZ used Hilde at some points in the tournament but did not place top 8 this time. Something-Unique actually beat RTD twice and eliminated Ceirn with Kilik.
She is low but not for the reasons you’d think. (Tira that is)
She is low because in jolly she has very poor damage options and in generally unsafe. Her self-damage in gloomy would only be justified on hit for MAJOR dmg, but they half assed it and made her take dmg on block (meaning with low life she has disastrously limited options). She has few guaranteed dmg set ups and most of her dmg comes from escapable stuns and lows that can be blocked on reaction. her oki is poor, she hasabysmal post-gi games, her ring out game is poor and her stepkill is average.
While player skill can easily overcome a lot of her flaws, her battle is an uphill one. She had an excellent character design and a charming mood mechanic (we all loved the idea, they just seemed to half ass in), in the end it was just poorly executed. The reality is, in sc4 tira has to work A LOT harder for damage than “most” characters. This makes her “bad”
Oh dear Lord Josh, that’s all my friend really needed to hear…ever. He mains a vomit inducing Talim, and this will drive him to master her even moreso.
Shoot, that even gives me hope, as I main Seong Mi-na.
Seong Mina has tricks. But she can also be played safely and does hella soul gauge damage (meaning critical finishes are easy for her to set up).
What makes mina bad though, is a lack of good lows and a crucial lack of damage outside ‘tip’ range on her weapon, paired with lack of quick up close moves. Her best move is arguably 4K,B since it’s auto-gi’s, tracks sidestep and leads to a nice inescapable stun for 3K,K, 33K, B~ into wake up mix up. But that is easy to see coming. Try utilizing her safest moves up close like 66A and 4A. When at max range play poke games with AAB (it does hella gauge on block) and get used to having to develop your defense, because Mina gets rushed down easily.
Interesting fact- Mina is the only character in the game that does not have a JF (just frame) move.
I play her as well, as a counter to Algol, while she is terribly fun to play, she is hard to take seriously at a high level.
thuggish shoulda got 1st or 2nd at evo : / he was telling me about some cassandra properties he wasn’t aware of against KDZ (that was him right?). he def. shoulda won that first set (and then the 2nd he did of course)
I was the guy with glasses explaining stuff The asian guy was one of the Cali players that Cenerian (the Hilde player) eliminated from the national qualifier. So you can understand the hate.
That’s one of the shitty things about Hilde, you can try to avoid it, and even do what you ought to do correctly and the game will just be like, “Nope, I feel like changing the mechanics of the game on the fly. You lose now.”
Hi, I’m Esom. I hate Hilde. Oh, and I’ve been among the top players since SC2.
P.S. I love how “Hilde didn’t win EVO/Nats” is an argument for her not being broken. Two incidents does not a pattern make. None of you should become math majors. They didnt win in LARGE part because they had to face eachother early on. Some incarnations of Akuma are considered broke, but even with a soft ban people used to pick him and gasp not win.
I guess now people are talking about how stages make the game random and that’s a bad thing. People who are looking for reasons to dislike any game will find ways to do it no matter how you explain it to them. They want to discredit SCIV by using Hilde as an example, so let them. Evo and Nationals were supposed to be the measuring stick by which Hilde was to be judged by the SCIV community itself, and only the top players from those tournaments should have opinions worth considering regarding that particular issue.
Sorry to hear that Esom, obviously I said ‘most people’ because not everyone is going to agree on something. Are there people in the SCIV community who don’t like Hilde? Of course and that’s why we have our own debates. Hating playing against a particular character shouldn’t be the criteria by which to judge that character but this is another issue largely explored by the community already.
Her mood changes when she attacks with specific moves are random. Taunt has the highest chance of a mood change. Knockdown doesn’t affect anything. When she’s down to 40% she changes automatically.
ChaCha is correct about JS. However her post-GI game is not abysmal. Far from it actually. There’s a chance for some great damage with 4A:A alone. I mentioned that in my guide on 8wayrun.com for those interested. Most of her damage does not come from escapeable stuns. That makes no sense. Her oki is indeed poor but she has it. It’s no Yoshi 3B so it takes prediction and training to make effective. Her lows aren’t that great so she takes more risk than most when using them for little reward. Her anti-step could definitely be better but you work with what you’ve got. In GS she’s more of a viable character. The HP loss is the only thing that hinders her. So we accept her as low tier given the unwarranted risks you have to take.
