Return of the flag?

The poll was closed, lets try it again.

Street Fighter 4 had national flags next to the characters names in the vs and select screens. For some reason Super Street Fighter 4 and later had that detail omitted. Should these flags return? I always thought it adds a bit of atmosphere to the tournament character of the game, gives some background to the fighters and i would like to have them back.

Flags are ok, but kind of an irrelevant feature. Some characters don’t even really have a nationality. I’m not sure why they were removed though. And it’s sort of bad to have nationalism attached to characters IMO just because of politics.

Of course flags should return

It give better the feeling of World Tournament, and for many SF characters national identity is big influence of they designs

I miss it from Vanilla, for whatever reason more the years go on more developers become pussies in order to avoid any kind of controversy
Fuck that shit, a flag is just a flag

I remember Ono saying that the flags were removed from SSFIV because there was already a lot going on in the Vs. screen (BP, PP, Player Names, Character Names, Stage Name etc.) But, yeah, they should return! I was sad to see that Hakan couldn’t properly represent his nation as the only Turkish character.

Yes flags should return

Alex should be the first character to rep the rainbow flag.

Nationalism is archaic. We are one (under the Illuminati).

Plus some of the flags make no sense. Abel, Decapre and Cammy for example are lab grown humans. Yet they somehow have a nationality.

There is no need for nations in a fighting game. Seeing a country’s flag at the start of a battle above a char’s image just ruins the screen for me. I care for the char, not the nation.
I also find it really irrational that during tournaments people shout “USA! USA!” or commentators say “he is the only chance Japan has left” and stuff. He is an individual. The country is not playing, he is playing.

Nationality is pretty common in fight sport event and on general on world sports event (just think olympics, soccer world cup etc)

Associate the flag is also kinda like say “the best of xxx country”, it mean become representative wich was the core of example SF2.
The entire classic cast is made with characters that have extremely strong link with theyr nationality… ironically the only that had no evident link (M.Bison to Thailand) is because he want to build his own nation

In SF in particular is a very important pillar of the chara design, the third after the character itself and the chosen martial art

And is’nt limited to old SFs, since the very last chars are

Abel- ok, just fighter(Fedor) tribute
Seth- lab material

ElFuerte- Mexican/lucha libre
Juri- Korean/TKD
C.Viper- USA/CIA agent, very typical figure
Hakan- Turkey/Oil turkish wrestling
Rufus- USA/ Kung fu, but clearly designed to be a murrican parody
Gouken- Japan/ whatever imaginary japanese martial art shotostyle is. Plus very traditional design in all costumes
Decapre- Russia/Russian name and accent

Basically clear majority of new characters from very last SF game have still an important trait in nationality.
That’s still SF design, and tbh i hope continue that way

Cammy works for the British military, saying she’s British makes sense as it is her adopted home country. Same with Abel and France. They probably have passports from those countries. Decapre and Seth are the ones that wouldn’t make sense. Decapre has never shown any link to Russia other than her name and speaking accent. Seth doesn’t claim a country, rightfully so.

I agree with Daemos to a point. It is totally pointless. Street Fighter is fiction, and so is nationality. They have no nationality, and nor do we as human primates. Borders are fiction, there is no science behind it, it is only “there” on maps to mentally masturbate the minds of insecure individuals. Segregation should have no place anywhere. They should also remove the flag system online and solely represent the player with their own name and a bar showing ACTUAL latency.
Cultures divide us, not borders. Some cultures are good, most of them are illogical and inhumane and should be discarded or excluded for the sake of a better future for all of us. (In a few hundred years maybe.)
Street Fighter - fighting games - is only one thing, and is what I love, psychological warfare between two human beings that harms nobody, just like chess.

To quote The Hound from Game of Thrones - “Fuck the King.”

It’s pedantic, but depending on the Vs. screen setup, it may be a nice touch.

Not to sound rude dude, but i can’t give two shits about your 2015 globalist philosophy
**
To be clear i’m not even that nationalistic myself, politically i’m kinda “left” or whatever is in other countries**

But nationality is big part of SF chara design and identity, and deny it mean remove part of the art style and product charm

No thanks

ps: about remove flags of players i’m actually ok with that, make it optional

The nationality of the characters has been important to the identity of the franchise from the start. It specifically was a worldwide tournament spanning several countries with international participants. That continued in SF2 as well with the release of “World Warriors.” The fact this tournament takes place all over the world with various people representing various countries is a big part of what IS Street Fighter.

The designs of the characters also often mirror aspects of the culture of their country of origin. Not always of course, but often. Some like Decapre seem pointless and token. Others like Guile, Rufus, Balrog, Sagat, Adon, Chun, Honda, Dhalsim, Sakura, Ryu, Fei Long, Dudley, ect these all have designs and sometimes even personalities directly influenced by their country of origin. Vega wouldn’t be nearly as cool or unique of a design if they didn’t make his lower half an obvious call towards the Spanish matadors of his country of origin.

Yeah, it’s just a game. But within the context of this particular franchise, nationality has always been part of it’s core. You could take that away of course, it’s just fluff, but it’s that fluff that formed a global franchise spanning 30 years almost.

You’re talking about culture Eternal. Cestus is talking about nationality as if street fighters represent their countries in the same way soccer teams do (they don’t). Aside from characters like Gief who do want to represent their nation most characters are in the fight for personal reasons and people relate to a character’s persona (which could be influenced by their cultural background) far more than their nationality.

This is why flags aren’t that important. Having fighters that represent different cultures/fighting styles isn’t quite the same.

What about Guile’s flags? Do we laser remove those off his arms?

No need. Guile will do it himself for us once he discovers that the very government he fights for are and have always been in collusion with Shadaloo.
