Retro Gaming Thread

As I mentioned in the Castlevania thread I got a hold of the Konami WiiWare Rebirth games and so far have beat two of them.

Castlevania Adventure Rebirth. Awesome. Check it out. Plays like the old games but with the addition of a temporary fireball upgrade for your whip and easy jumping ala Castlevania 4. However (and I like this) the whip still has a delay which means you still have to time your attacks. Starts out really easy then the final level starts to kick your ass. Has some replayability to it by finding keys and unlocking doors to get items (mostly hearts and 1-ups though). Great final battle with Dracula too.

Contra Rebirth. Unlike Castlevania this is not a remake. It’s a brand new Contra that looks and plays like Contra 3. It’s fairly easy except for the bosses in level 3 where they introduce some bullet hell and the very last boss in the game. You could accuse it of just rehashing Contra 3 but it takes a different spin and feels like a new experience. Another thing I don’t like is the lack of weapons. That’s right, you only have the Spread, the Laser, and Homing shots. Nothing else and you cannot upgrade them like in Contra 4. Otherwise, it’s a fantastic game and definitely worth getting the Dolphin emulator to work to play it if you’re a fan of Contra. A plus is that the story is hilarious.

Have yet to play Gradius Rebirth.

on the contrary I think its the easiest one in the series…its the only one I beat…or even remotely got close to beating…and its the most under rated

So are AKI wrestling games retro yet? Cause they definitely improved after each installment unlike Madden and COD. Too bad Fight for NY was their last game.

So, just beat Gradius Rebirth. It’s easily the hardest of the rebirth games. It’s a remake of Gradius that shakes things up a little bit (this time you’re not fighting the same ship at the end of every level with increasing difficulty, you only fight that ship twice) and includes a level right out of Gradius 3 and I think the final stage is either in the original or one of the other sequels or maybe I’m thinking of Lifeforce.

Very difficult game. Typical Gradius difficulty in that if you don’t have decent memorization of the level sooner or later you will lose your upgrades and have to start over. The difficulty is based around getting back your upgrades to stand a chance. I think I crippled my thumb in that last level. Fun game but I wouldn’t say it’s a requirement to play if you’ve played the other Gradius games as it’s just more of the same.

I’d like to play that PS2 Gradius worked on by Treasure. And the PS2 Contra’s too.

As I said once before, the fact that I can’t buy the new AKI-developed wrestling game every year is bullshit.

I downloaded Cool Spot for the SNES the other day… underneath all the 7up propaganda there’s a pretty fucking solid platform game there…def.underrated game imo…I used to love that game when I was a youngin…suprisingly the gfx hold up…

^ It was made in the same engine used for the Genesis Aladdin and Earthworm Jim.

Any good PC engine games that are exclusive to the system? Don’t list arcade ports like Splatterhouse and all those SHMUPS like R-Type. I can only think of the Adventure Island, Devil Crush, and the Bonk games. I know the CD add on had (of course) Rondo of Blood.

I’m pretty sure Gate of Thunder is exclusive, and it’s a shmup. It’s for the Turbo CD though.

The Ys games weren’t exclusive, but I think the best versions were on the PC Engine.

Yea those Ys games where tops, head and shoulders above the other versions of the time.

Sapphire (another shmup) is another good exclusive. I’d ask @Ramrod for more recommendations, he’s a pretty serious PCE collector I think.

Edit: Assuming you’re buying these games, Sapphire was re-released on one of the PC-Engine Best Collections for PSP (the OG PCE version is rare/expensive)

I loved that game on the genesis, I still have it somewhere. Not only was it challenging, it was pretty difficult to 100% and it had awesome music for the 16 bit days.

For shits and giggles, MUSHA homebrew’d for Sega Master System.

Pretty damn close for an 8-bit system.

Collection of every single NES game start screen:

Read that as “their last wrestling game”. Don’t know why everyone keeps calling it a fighter.

Can anybody explain what was wrong with Metal Slug 2? I guess on the Internet you’re supposed to use extreme language to call attention to your shitty opinion, so I don’t get why MS2 is “an abomination to mankind” just because MSX used the same levels. Is there anything -actually- bad about MS2? I heard the “why play 2 when there’s X” argument already.

Hey man, do I need anything other than what I download from the send space link? Can I just download it and throw it on an emulator and play it? The game looks pretty awesome.

Does anybody know of any other good castlevania (any system) fan games like this that can be downloaded and thrown on an emulator? A castlevania 2 rom with all the problems fixed? Or megaman games?

I’m using a psp with emulators on it.

I did some digging and they mostly did some Japan only Kinnikuman games. They’re now called Syn Sophia. But their last game that has the AKI stamp of approval is

Hey, can anybody link me to translated versions of sweet home for the nes, mega man and bass for the snes, and kid Dracula for the nes? I can’t find any that aren’t in Japanese. I’m looking for roms so I can play these on the emulators on my psp.

Nothing wrong is because both games happen to be the same with X being the beef up version with more extras, unlockables, bosses etc, etc. It’s silly people argue about these things it’s not like this is fighting games.

Anyway I’ll play MS2 over MS4 or MS5 anyday
