Retro Gaming Thread

I had a NES, SNES, and Genesis. Missed out on the 32 bit era mostly. Right around the time that I got the N64 was when I got into PC gaming. Been a PC dude ever since. Did buy a Wii because I loved the idea behind it but the execution for motion control was awful aside from Wii Sports and owned a PS3 for a few fighters.

Aside from PC I still love the Genesis the most but I’ve always loved action games and could never get into RPG’s. Also, Castlevania Bloodlines is way better than Castlevania 4. Fuck that game.

The blast processing is strong in this one

Speaking from my experience with comparing the Mortal Kombat games, SNES had the better graphics and sound by a long shot, all Sega had going for it was MK1 with the blood option. Genesis had the better Jurassic Park game, if that counts. And Moonwalker. (Those were the only two games I had besides Sonic 1). I can’t remember which system I played more, I had more games for SNES but all of our friends had different games for different systems we would all play together. And remember renting games? That sure was fun. Back then it wasn’t a war, we just loved both systems for what they were, for the most part. Looking back, I would say I have more love for Nintendo, but still had lots of good times on Sega.

Haven’t played anything on the PC since Diablo II, Unreal Tournament and Mechwarrior series haha.

Anything Castlevania is dope sans the N64 titles; I don’t know what’s wrong with me.

I feel sega was the more progressive publisher…furthered video game violence and it allowed for more genres of music due to the sound quality.

SNES had the better Shadowrun game, though it was great on both systems.

The (mostly 3rd party) games that used the generic GEMS sound library sounded the same and usually sounded pretty bad.

Since the thread has been rebranded as the Retro gaming thread

Here is the ost of one of my favorites bullet hell from the NES

The best song is the bosses song around 9:20

edit

Ya know what had a great OST, dat Jackie chan nes game…great visuals too its a shame we couldn’t get more nes games looking that good.

I was wrong, that wasn’t all. Thank you for correcting my mistake. I might add F-Zero, Star Fox, DKC 1-3, and Mario Kart.

Good stuff! I’ll match with Contra III, the Fly-swatting mini-game in Mario Paint, Separation Anxiety and Maximum Carnage respectively, Legend of Mystical Ninja, Gradius III and so much more.

Sidebar; I remember as a kid FIENDING for Super Metroid at Funcoland but instead parent’s bought Bases Loaded for NES. Needless to say, I was highly upset. This thread is bringing back the repressed memories.

Are we forgetting Mickey Mouse for gensis…game was flat out garbage on super nes.

So what are the Genesis must haves? I never owned one and I’m seriously considering picking up one to mod the heck out of.

I’m lost, are you talking about the Magical Circus one’s or whatever it’s called for SNES? Those games weren’t that bad!

It’s been so long since I’ve had one but my list;

Phantasy Star (whole series is dope)
Comix Zone
Gunstar Heroes
Eternal Champions
Road Rash (another great series)
Castle of Illusion
Ristar
Shining series
Vectorman
Streets of Rage series (great, great, great)
Wonder Boy series
Shadowrun
Columns

I’m sure there’s a lot that I left out. That’s just games that I remember personally owning at one point in time.

Ahem. Sonic?

I figured those were givens.

Man I’m not gonna get into which console is better, as I love them both to death. I was a Nintendo kid growing up, but I always had friends/cousins with dat Genesis, so I got to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Super NES had some watershed moments-- Super fuckin’ Metroid being the first time a game ever got an emotional reaction out of me. Fuck an Aeris… when the Baby Metroid got murked, I was legit pissed Final Fantasy II(IV) and III(VI) with actual characters rather than cardboard cutouts. Seeing the Mega Man series evolve into the X series with its heavy guitar riffs and faster gameplay, and in my opinion, the most aesthetically beautiful 2D platformer ever in Yoshi’s Island… SUPER MARIO RPG, CHRONO TRIGGER… and that’s just scratching the surface of the massive library… SNES was a boss.

Genesis, however, was the hardcore, twitch gamer’s heaven… Streets of fuckin’ Rage II, Vectorman, Sonic, GUNSTAR HEROES, Contra: Hard Corps, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Road Rash 2, Shinobi III… man, oh man was the Genesis ever a constant test of your skills.

16-bit era will NEVER be topped… fuck a Triple A “experience”, kids today don’t know shit about dat Greatest Era of Gaming. Yes, I’m an “old man gamer” and I’m ever so glad I got to grow up in that era.

My Top 20:

Gunstar Heroes
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Sonic and Knuckles 3
YuYu Hakusho Makyo Toitsusen
Splatterhouse 2 & 3
