Mike Tyson really that hard? I mean i couldn’t beat him back in the day but when i bought an NES, this was the first game i bought. I went straight for Tyson 007 373 5963, only took me like 6 or so tries…I can usually beat him pretty easily…What’s hard to beat is the arcade version of Mike Tyson Punchout for the Playchoice 10 which i also have…Its not that its more difficult its cuz i have to use the arcade joystick to play it.
I remember getting pretty far in Battletoads, it was ridiculous game though when it came to 2 players. My bro & i probably had more fights because of Battletoads 2-player mode then say SF2 haha…
Hardest platformer I’ve played in my life is probably the Japanese Super Mario Bros 2 (aka The Lost Levels), the arcade version of Ghouls 'n Ghosts or Ninja Gaiden 2 for the NES.
Hardest boss for me is the true final boss of Demon’s Crest for the SNES.
I don’t see all the fuss about Ninja Gaiden 2. Sure, it’s CHALLENGING, but nowhere near the impossible/unfair/frustating levels of NG 1. No, it wasn’t about the shadow clones (although they were helpful) it’s just less clogged with BS that NG 1 had.
I can’t vouch about NG III since I never touched that game…but limited continues DOES sound like a total bitch and a half.
Played gain ground again. My friends and I were tripping when we played two player.
We made names for the people cause we didn’t know the names. Like the starting spear guy we called baraka/Abobo
Then we had whiteman who sometimes we placed under the moniker of “Cable” cause he had the pistol, and white woman who we gave random generic white woman names.both are visceral to plot and therefore can’t be left behind however Abobo can be forgotten about and will always die first. Whiteman also steals the other players bitches because his needs will always come first
Then we got Action Hero, who we retconned to Action hank, but then we realized he was a shitty version of abobo so we retconned him again into a soft name like his playstyle and he became “Hotcakes Hank” and then after further proof of terrible tech, he was degraded to homo hank.
Dude with the staight forward cannon blast was Billy/unknown soldier.
Arhur was the guy with the firewall
Sonya blade was the omni directional granadier
Dude with the spread missles was named Murphy/Robocop
Missle shooter was Sentinel
Ninja with the barriers was " Sir weaksauce"
Black gal with the boomerangs we called. Storm she is also the greatest rapper alive.
Police officer was M bison
And then we had the G.I. Joe crew Admrial asshat and general “I gets bitches.”
Does anyone actually know the names of those people?
I still contend that the Genesis had the better action games compared to the SNES. I’m only counting console-exclusive titles instead of games that were ported to both systems (Earthworm Jim, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, etc). I decided to try to find any good action titles on SNES other than Contra 3 and Wild Guns and thanks to this thread I found Sky Blazer which I thought was pretty good. Haven’t beaten it yet but I see the resemblance to Spawn on the SNES (made by the same dev team).
I don’t like the Turrican games. I don’t hate them but they’re just meh to me and don’t really utilize the game’s mechanics too well (IMHO).
Then there’s the Megaman games and I’m just going to say that I’m not a big fan of Megaman. I will concede that 7 and the X titles are good games if you’re into that. Just FYI, I have beaten 7 and X.
The Final Fight sequels are shockingly bland. No new ideas just more of the same. I do very slightly like 3 because it had special moves but that was about it. The sequels are no match to Streets of Rage and Golden Axe.
Rendering Ranger. From the same guys who made the Turrican games. Haven’t beaten it but half the game is a run and gun similar to Contra 3 but with not as fluid controls. And the other half is a space shmup that is not as good as the run and gun part. I’d check it out, it just sucks that only half the game is good.
Spawn. Talked about this a little bit. I was really into Spawn growing up and I had to get this. It’s a different kind of beat 'em up in that it’s more methodical and gives you free use of fighting game-inspired special moves. Even though 2-3 of them are useful. Great game. You get a lot more out of it if you’re into Spawn. Note: you do need to either read an FAQ or the manual in order to do all the special moves.
Ninja Warriors. Made by Natsume, the same guys behind Wild Guns and the greatest NES game no one played Shatter Hand. Plays similarly to Kung Fu on the NES or Splatterhouse 1 and 2 but it just doesn’t have the charm. I know the Happy Video Game Nerd did an episode on this but I don’t know, I find it too shallow. It doesn’t give you a lot of special moves to work with and the idea behind your screen clearing super is interesting but inconsistent. Sometimes you get knocked down and you lose your meter and sometimes you get knocked down and you don’t. Makes no sense to me. What’s worse is that the game doesn’t really change it up very much and goes through the motions of the typical beat 'em up. And it’s not really about learning patterns like Kung Fu or Splatterhouse. Instead it’s all about crowd control and timing when to use your super. Even Kung Fu changed it up a little bit and had you fight different enemies that could throw you off (coincidentally this game also features killer midgets). And every level in the Splatterhouse games gave you something different and you couldn’t walk through it and mash punch to beat it. You had to learn the pattern in each level.
