I dont know why dudes even care what these reviewers think anyway…i mean, its all subjective anyway. Furthermore nobody here would pay attention to lets say, “X” fighting game being reviewed by random editor…why do you suddenly have interest in what he/she says if its another genre??
I don’t take these reviews seriously, I read Gamespot and IGN’s review, and it seems evident they aren’t really judging it by its own merits. The common theme they seem to run with is “Its not teh suvivul horrahss”. The gameplay itself isn’t really examined or discussed properly but yet they also compliment the game on its storyline. The camera is ALOT better in the final from what they say, the enemies are pretty tough, and A.I for co-op is pretty good allegedly.
So if they don’t really bash the gameplay itself and they praise the story…what are they really complaining about? They say its too many cutscense and QTEs, but I don’t see any other major criticisms. Maybe I need to read the reviews again, but it seems obvious they are really only pissed about the new direction that the RE6 series has taken.
But hey, they ARE entitled to their opinion, but me? I’m buyin this soon as I get some money because I had fun playing the demo. If its more of that, I don’t have many complaints.
Seriously tho, if they don’t like the game, that’s one thing. But in the reviews they basically state “Solid gameplay, Good A.I, Lenghty Campaigns, Good Graphics, Great story, Fixed Camera issues…BUT the game is awful because of CUTSCENES and a couple QTEs?”
That shit DOES NOT add up. Maybe Capcom didn’t pay off the reviewers or something. lol
The problem is there are multiple reviews giving the game a bad score. I fully agree that reviews don’t matter if you like a game but they are a way to gauge how good a game is before buying it. Demos and videos also help but even the demos got slack. At the end of the day if you like it buy it, if you don’t then stay away.
EDIT: The gamespot review seems on point at least from what I played in the demo. The game suffers from Uncharted 3 syndrome. To make the game more epic than two they focus more on presentation with graphics, qtes and cinematics but keep gameplay to a minimum. RE6 throws all these elements together but the final package ends up being sloppy (roughly what gamespot said) but for a hardcore RE fan I think the story will be incentive enough.
I think that Capcom’s next title should be a remake of RE0,1, 2, 3, or X with RE6’s combat. Since we’ll never get to play those Gamecube remakes (outside of the Gamecube) I won’t mind another remake. Plus it’ll give them some more time to think over their multi-direction before starting RE7.
The video game industry has become similar to the music industry when it comes to journalistic coverage of releases. There are camps, bandwagons, and a seemingly-increasing lack of objectivity, but when something like this happens, it seems to me that it’s evidence of a greater culture shift. It’s not necessarily that the game itself is so poor, even if it is in fact that bad, but it’s that we’re six major entries into a series (with many, many side entries) that has little or nothing to do anymore with the original concepts of the game design that made the entry worth creating in the first place. Many gamers are getting tired of the “Americanization” of game design.
As for me, I see their point, but I’m not going to get outraged about it. RE6 seems fun, I like to have fun, I’ll buy it and play the damn thing. I loved the originals for their tenseness and sparsity, I loved RE4 and RE5 because they were fun as hell to play, and this looks to be the same.
If there are any hardcore RE fans who keep up with RE news in this thread they would have recalled the RE team giving and interview right after RE5’s release. They said they wanted to take RE in a completely new direction ending the current story arc. Something tells me the investors wanted them to stick with the RE5/Uncharted formula. I’m guessing their plan has been pushed to RE7. Next gen title is the likely bet.
I don’t know why people keep saying that reviews are wholly subjective. Just because you might like something doesn’t mean that it’s not objectively still bad. So if QTEs are poorly designed and implemented then they are poorly designed and implemented. If the graphics have a lot of hiccups then they have a lot of hiccups. There are things in games that can be looked at objectively and carry a lot of weight.
Well I don’t think that they would be so bold as to keep that up with the way RE6 is being handled critically now. I think the problem with what Capcom is attempting is that it’ll leave a void in their portfolio which is getting an increasing number of voids.
Agreed 100% some flaws are just facts people have to live with. Capcom still has talent and the high points of RE6 and Dragons Dogma prove it but they gotta get it together.
After doing more training with the demo Now my real only problem with the game is who do I start with? lol I want to save Leon for last but then Im like okay save the new guy. After mastering Jake’s cqc in the demo now I think I need to start with him.
Poor Chris who is forever stuck as number 2 now matter how I start. So I’ll go with Jake/Chris/Leon.
I almost wanna do Chris whole part with a friend, just playing the demo with friends was funny. I was peirs quoting lines from aliens, battle la, gi joe Over hyping parts. “Holy shit J’avo’s got fukkin bazookas” “Fam wtf Im on it with my thermal snipe shit!!”
But its whatever for the bad reviews. Imma have fun. especially chris part cause Im doing it like a movie.
I like resident evil and I always will so it was bound to change or evolve over time. I miss the old school shit but I know shit cant stay the same.
The only thing they need to bring back is Darkman aka the gun merchant from part 4.
With so much coming out, it’s hard not to look at a review to get a sense of priority in terms of purchase. I do take issue with people following one man’s opinion like the gospel. Gotta check everything out and find a middle ground (unless the shit is that bad). I do the same with movies.
Kinda sucks that it’s gotten to this point with the series though. I’m probably part of the group that was “going to get it anyways”, but some of the shit I saw made no sense coming from Capcom. The negatives had jack shit to do with it not being old-school. Stuff like repeating bosses that I didn’t give DMC 4 a pass for, is in this game for no reason whatsoever.
Yep, add rentals into the mix as well. I’m going that route first.
As they should be. This is critically the worse in the properly number RE series. It’s like if Mario Galaxy was a critical mess or a Madden being a critical mess or a Call of Duty being a critical mess or any other game with a lot of sequels and a high level of critical success. Fans don’t want bad games in their series. I mean we probably all thought DMC was going to be over once 2 came out. Thank god for 3!
Epidemic unless you are some multi millionaire to throw 100,000 at buying up copies of RE6 then what gaming journalists think is important. We care because not all die hard fans make up any games sales. You think that 7 million of RE5’s buyers are die hard fans? Probably half that are and realistically even less. When someone is on the fence about a purchase a review can easily sway them. And since we collectively want more Resident Evil we want people to buy these games.
If any triple A game gets accused as being shit by over half of the reviewers you’d better believe that word of mouth will get around too. Friends will tell friends not to buy the game and that game takes a sales nose dive. You think that all this obsession in the industry over metacritic scores is for nothing? Companies have cold hard data to show how much a review score can sway buyers. I mean it’s bad enough if you are a new IP and trying to make bank but when you have crappy reviews too it’s even harder to make that climb up. Infact I can’t think of any outright objectively shitty games that do well financially.
On the flipside I bet many DMC fans want DmC to fail so Capcom doesn’t feel compelled to give Ninja Theory another go at Dante. Like I bet we’d be getting another Castlvania from IGA and his team if it weren’t for the fact that Lords of Shadow did so well. And I bet in Lords of Shadow’s case those solid reviews helped out. I know I was on the fence about the game at first.
Edit: Another example of the importance of review scores. Batman Arkham Asylum. Most regular gamers know to avoid the fuck out of licensed titles because they have been historically terrible. Sure the game would have probably sold alright but gaming journalists falling in love with it and giving it extremely high scores is probably what got more people to buy the game. “Hey Mac. I saw some reviews of that Batman game. It sounds pretty tight and it the demo was pretty fun.” “I’ll have to check that out then Tim.”
If the thoughts of others didn’t matter then they wouldn’t matter and this wouldn’t be a discussion.
I think Madden and Call of Duty come out too frequently for people to care about a bad score really, but I know what your point is. I mean yeah no one wants to see a bad game in a franchise they love, but some of the responses seem pretty absurd and ignorant to what might be objectively bad.
Hopefully this wakes Capcom up, though I’m sure the game will still sell really well so who knows what will happen in the long run/
It’s not the worst thing. They have their place when they make sense. Like in Bayonetta X was punch and in QTEs, most of them at least, where were punching something you were hammering X. QTEs can should be a light extension of the base gameplay into a more cinematic environment where full control from the player just isn’t possible.
Like right in the RE6 demo we have two examples of good and bad QTEs. A good one was when they have to close the door shut on the zombies and Helena is pushing on the door with the analog stick. We move with the analog stick so the natural use of the analog stick to push towards a wall makes sense. As does the aiming and shooting on Leon’s part. On the flipside we end up with that atrocious key search in the car. Instead of us actually looking around with the right analog stick we are using the left analog stick and we are just wiggling it like a mad man. So every stinking time you play this section you have to go through that crap. You can’t get better at it. You have to deal with Leon fumbling about like a fool.
Next gen though I expect better real time interaction from everybody. QTEs have become a fucking crutch.
