Unlocking characters is only good if the characters you unlock are tourney banned or single-player only. Shin Akuma, God Rugal, Gill, Apocalypse, Onslaught, Galactus, etc. As Rok said, unlocking characters was amazing before the age of the internet. Now, we all know what’s in the game and we want it right now.
Sure, I’d rather unlock a character the old fashioned way than put money down to unlock them, but I’d rather do neither and just have them all there from the get-go. Harada seems to have the right idea by not charging for characters but charging for vanity items instead. If you unlock stuff, it should be vanity items too, like costumes, palettes, stages, music, etc.
I don’t mind unlocking stuff in fighters as long as the requirements are good. I don’t wanna go through arcade mode on the hardest difficulty while getting only super finishes, without continuing, and 10 times with a different character each time.
Personally, I’d like for devs to put in a cheat code (that we’ll have to figure out through hints or something) that would unlock any locked characters. That way, those whom are impatient or just don’t wanna deal with it can, and those who like unlocking the final boss can do that.
I remember losing my shit when I unlocked onslaught in mvc1 also I remember trolling my cousin by picking him and doing the special when he summons a clone.
I really enjoyed unlocking characters back in the Tekken 1-2 days. It made the roster seem less overwhelming and I was forced to play characters I would’ve otherwise avoided.
IMO, there’s nothing wrong with some simple unlocking if you also include a “tournament mode” in the options.
I really enjoyed that extra hour delay to my Final Round XIV pool for unlocking MvC3 characters, on top of the 5 or so hours it was already running late. Didn’t feel like eating lunch anyway.
The unlock system in CvS1 was fucking atrocious! In the end, I just remember downloading a save file from online just to have all of the EX characters as well as Nakoruru and Morrigan.
I agree that games need to stop relying on DLC. Some companies are using DLC just fine and all, by providing unlockables and DLC at the same time. But I see companies tryign to make extra profit out of stuff that should have already been in the game in the first place, like cars as DLC, characters as DLC, and weapons (and similar stuff) as DLC. It’s pretty stupid.
Unlocking Mewtwo in Melee was probably my favourite unlocking experience, had one crazy session with 2 cousins so much candy. And just played that game straight for 20 hours, we already unlocked Mewtwo like 8-9 hours in but we already invested in the candy for that session. During that session we unlocked most of the characters through playing versus matches instead of the single player option. I liked that on nintendos part where you had multiple ways to unlock characters.
Can’t do that nowadays just unlock my characters for me now
yeah know how mportant it s for tournaments. but this really kills one of the beauties of fighting games, unlocking a character and discovering him/her/it for a few hours
Unlocking characters takes people back to a simpler time in videos games, it is also stupid. My KOF team consistes of one default character, one unlockable character and one DLC character so its always fun to go over someone else’s house and find out only one person on my team is available.
It adds no depth to the game, its just something people remember from when they were kids.
If I have to unlock super OP characters that are novelty only, and not essential to gameplay, then I don’t mind. e.g. SF4 and MvC3 having unlockables was stupid, because the consoles would have to have a save with those characters to have a tournament… Not the old days, plug in a memory card and go to the next system either…
but Shin Akuma and God Rugal in CvS2? Or the EX characters in Guilty Gear? Yeah, I don’t mind unlocking those. Felt a sense of accomplishment after getting them too. Just “fun” characters.
