Remember when you ACTUALLY had to unlock characters and stages?

I hated going through the process of leaving my console on all night so I could get enough points to buy MVC2 characters.
Ritual lasted for like a week. Fuck unlocking.

it was a real piss off when you’re having casuals on the earlier tekken games then your memory card crapped on you. you had to play the AI quite a few times to unlock just so you can enjoy your 2p battles again.

I remember, but then I grew hair in funny places and thought about unlocking girly parts instead.
Characters and stages are still very much a part of my life, if you catch my meaning.

i remember! shit was retarded!

Agreed, DLC should be adding content to an already complete game not unlocking characters that are all ready on the disk cough coughSFXTcough cough

Unlocking basic aspects of any game does not add life to it, it only delays it. Now add extra shit(That arent more difficult modes) and we can talk.

That’s because you’re playing games for the wrong reason.

I remember those days. Those days were not good days.

SFEX did it fine I think. It had a trial mode that you’d earn points to unlock secret characters and then a bonus stage Also gave you the option to input a cheat code at the menu screen to get all the unlocks without the hassle.

Though it’d be best if everything worth having was available from the start (characters). The bonus shit like stages, customes, items let that be a combo of unlocking or dlc (preferably both, so the cheap skates and still save their money if they so wish).

No-one’s mentioned SNK vs Capcom: The Match of the Millennium on the Neo Geo Pocket Color [sic].

Points-based unlocking with a random card element? Why, SNK, that’s clearly a winner! #forfuckssake

Absolutely brilliant game, though.

No just no, if you think that is bad seriously try the Japanese version of mvc2.

oh ya, boy do I miss leaving my PS2 on for 3 days just so I can play who I want in MvC2

On a unrelated note, I love your avatar. How’d you get dat shit?

Remember SSF2, you didn’t have to unlock anybody. Then SSF2T came out and had a secret character named Akuma. Now every game since then has had a secret character. Which has now turned into a DLC.

Once again we can thank whoever came up with Akuma for the bane of secret characters and DLC in our fighting games.

I remember playing MvC2 every day for a whole month to unlock everything. Every morning before work, MvC2. Come home from work, MvC2. First the characters, then the alternate stages, then the extra colors…

For those who don’t have the JP version, the unlock system is worse because unlike the US version you had three different kinds of points to earn:

D-Points: Earned by playing the game on console
N-Points: Earned by bringing your VM to the arcade version to transfer data
V-Points: Earned by playing online matches (yes, JP DC had online match play almost a decade before the XBLA/PSN release)

In the US version you just had to earn D-Points since US arcade release didn’t have the points system or VM transfer option and the console version doesn’t have online play.

Luckily for me I had this:

What was the nonsense-deal with the Japanese version?

ETA: Ah, I’ve just seen. Cripes.

Please read my post above.

Also, Arcade MvC2 had characters locked by time-release (the EXP system) so yeah.

Another thing:

Unlocking stuff in CvS1 was even worse than unlocking stuff in MvC2. How?

Morrigan and Nakoruru for the most infuriating example.

  1. Buy all of the extra colors for all the characters.
  2. Once you bought all of the extra characters, you must unlock the “right” to fight Morrigan and Nakoruru by buying their “shadows”.
  3. After buying their shadows, you must defeat them in Arcade mode.
  4. After that, you have to buy all of the EX characters to unlock the “right” to buy Morrigan and Nakoruru.

Same thing with Akuma: Buy Morrigan and Nakoruru, then buy Akuma’s shadow, then defeat Akuma in Arcade mode, then buy Akuma.

If you don’t have a Neo-Geo Pocket with SNK Vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium, prepare for a LONG ass grind.

I saw that as soon as I’d finished typing my question! Cheers!

I remember waiting for characters to unlock on our local Tekken 2 machine. Infuriating…

A few months ago I spotted a used copy of SF4 for the Xbox 360. I got it and thought it would be so fun to play vanilla Seth and try the Akuma RH loop again. And then I got home to find out the dreadful truth, I completely forgot that you had to unlocked the other 9 characters in this game. I swore to myself I’d never do this again, but here I was doing it again for the 5th time. First 4 were on PS3 and PC, 2 times each because I had to reinstall the game on PC and my PS3 YLOD. I no longer have the game on PC and my bro keeps my PS3 in his room now so that’s why I haven’t touched Vanilla SF4 in a long while.

But the point is, it fucking sucks and no future fighting game should ever make you have to painstakingly play the story mode to unlock characters. Maybe, just maybe 1 character at most. But anything more would to too damn much. No wait, fuck that, no unlocking characters ever again.
